I just upgraded from the Sony 7596 to the 7509HD and I can't lie, they are splendiferous. I noticed significant differences right away. For starters, the the 7509s are not as bright as its predecessor although it has a higher frequency response. The bass is reduced but gives room for a wider and more detailed midrange which, for me, is great because i only use my headphones for eq and listening to fine details. I have my Rokit 8s and sub for setting levels and mixing my lows. The 7509s fit around the head and ears much better than the 06's and the ear pads are much more durable. No more fidgeting with loose, delicate ear pads that seem to [*] u off by falling apart more than comforting your most important audio tool. I saw some bad reviews as i did my homework on this product which hindered my choice a little before i spoke with my genius Sound Dynamics professor who loved the headphones and recommended it to me. I think those review are based on people who are very used to a particular sounding headphone, but for me? Its the 09's all day.

I bought these years ago same style, but one model up w/ slight champagne and grey-ish tone. It had an even higher out put with impressively clear sound, Sony always delivers. But after 1~2 year of use the cord started to short out, first one of the side got quieter, and then I had to wiggle the cord to get any sound to come out at all. For such price it's very annoying. On the older Aiwa's cheaper pair (with cracked head band)still kept going. After this experience I never bought another headphone without detachable audio cord. Currently I've had Sennheiser for +8years and it's still going.
Sony used to be great in the 80s, but everything they make seems to have a short life span.

Comments about Sony MDR-7509HD Professional Monitor Headphones:
This my second set of Sony "Professional" headphones and they're very accurate through out the audio spectrum with terrific clarity and definition. Bass is strong and solid but not over powering, the highs are limited only by your recording device or mic set up. I don't think there is a better set at this price point.

Comments about Sony MDR-7509HD Professional Monitor Headphones:
I am a classical musician who records in concert halls- mostly chamber music (piano, brass, strings, percussion). I have always used Sony headphones when I engineer and produce, although I have tried out a number of other brands (Sennheiser, Grado). I would be the first to say that headphone sound, like speaker sound, is a personal choice, so read on with a grain of salt.
I was looking to upgrade my headphones and decided to try out a few pairs. After some research I focused in on the Sony MDR 7520 and the Sony MDR 7509HD. I am thrilled with both. They are clean, accurate and present in terms of sound. I can hear lots of detail in the variety of musical ensembles I have recorded, however it is a pure sound, uncolored and true to what you would hear live. I should also add that I use a variety of microphones, but stear mostly towards the Earthworks omnis- mics known for their true sound, no coloration- they pick up just about exactly what you hear- great for recording classical music in a hall. The Earthworks/Sony combo feels like a great pairing. The 7520 and 7509HD are both excellent phones for producing, engineering and editing- you get an incredibly true sense of what is being recorded.
For kicks I tried these headphones out on my stereo system listening to mastered and released recordings- the sound was as you would expect- very present, somewhat bright, almost too clear for "casual" listening- you get the detail that you hope for when recording and none of the coloration. I then went back to my pre-mastered Pro Tools sessions and listened with both pairs (7520 and 7509) and made the realization of why these are such great studio headphones- clarity and accuracy of sound, perfect for hearing what you are recording. They no longer sounded bright like they did on my stereo- they just sounded true.
If I had to compare these two headphones, the listening I did on my stereo of mastered recordings sort of helped in the distinguishing of each- the 7520's felt brighter than the 7509HD on released recordings, which made me think I preferred the 7509HD; but when I went back to listening in Pro Tools I found the 7520's to have a bit more clarity and detail. This was a very slight difference, but a difference none the less. Kind of like going from 11 point font to 12 point font (not a big deal to read 11 point font on its own, but when you compare it side by side with 12 point, there IS a difference- each will do just fine, but why not go with more detail if you can get it). I decided to keep both, since I usually have a need for at least two pairs of headphones at recording sessions- might as well have a choice.
The only negative I found was that the 7509HD made a little bit of noise if my head position changed while listening- since they fold for storage, the hinges have some give, thus creating a little bit of sound when you move slightly- not a huge deal, but when you are listening with a fine tooth comb for any and all sounds in the mix, you want the phones to be snug and quiet. The 7520's don't make ANY extraneous sounds. Both headphones fit well, are comfy and look fantastic- the 7520's have an especially smooth, simple design- very sharp aesthetically. I'd say that even though the 7509's move a bit when on, they are likely to be the more comfortable of the two for most people- bigger ear pads, larger cup around your ear, less gripping on your head; but having said that, the 7520's still feel great when on.
I would say, and this is typical with any Professional level Sony headphone, you're money is well spent on either of these. I am very happy with my purchase (of course, I did end up keeping both).

These are great headsets but they are actually too big. I am not able to adjust them small enough. Similar versions worked fine.

Comments about Sony MDR-7509HD Professional Monitor Headphones:
I own both of these headphones, the 7506 for about 4 years and the 7509HD for a couple of weeks. The 7506 I have used in many general purpose applications, monitoring, remote recording, important listening, privacy etc. They are a fine, general standard headphone. However, the 7509HD, although colored differently, are in a slightly different category. They are larger, provide a better seal and a bit more 'clumsy' to handle. But, they are are 'more precise' in their general performance. This translates into an inner 'clarity', which, while present in the 7506, is simply "better" in the 7509.This means that imaging is in general better across the entire frequency response (including clarifying the low-mid and low ranges). In 'direct comparison' to the 7506, having been accustomed to the 7506, it took a couple of hours to note that the 'differences' were not a 'defect' of the 7509HD, but rather needed my hearing to adjust to the differences. The 7509HD seal better, are slightly heavier, and thus can become somewhat warmer, more quickly. Are they worth the difference in price? For the casual user, maybe, maybe not. For the [even slightly] more serious user, yes. These are the ones to get for the more critical listening situation.[...]

I originally purchased the previous model of these headphones 7 years ago. SEVEN years ago.
The cable finally wore out on that pair.
I decided to upgrade in my next purchase and got these 7509 headphones instead.
I honestly couldn't be happier.
A lot of people say that they are "bulky," but that's actually a feature I really like. They fit very well over my ears and that's what I really love.
I'm a live concert audio technician by background and these studio headphones are PERFECT for me.
I would strongly recommend them to anyone that needs a great and serious pair of headphones.

Comments about Sony MDR-7509HD Professional Monitor Headphones:
I'm a music composer by hobby and these headphones are really cool. The only bad thing so far is that the headphones sound is not so amazing by itself (the sound is like flat, but interesting anyway), but, once you equalize it, the sound is incredible! Every single frequency can be heard! I would really recommend this product because of this. The sound is just superb when equalizing it.
Another little bad thing, but this is a personal thing, is that the tighter position of the headphones (0) is a little bit bigger than my head. I consider I have an average head, about 54 cm of radius (I've measured my head by using my fingers, but around 50-54 cm)
Other than these things, this headphone is INCREDIBLE!!! and I would buy it again :D

A great pair of headphones that feel very sturdy. They are a bit bulky, but they don't feel like they will fall apart. They fit great and are comfortable, and best of all the ear padding doesn't fall off.

I use these headphones to edit audio clips for my job, which requires high accuracy. They produce great, high quality sound and are very comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. Since I'm sitting at my desk on a computer, the size of the headphones is pretty much irrelevant to me, although if I were traveling often or using them for personal reasons, I might go with something smaller.

I'm a deposition videographer. The end result of my work will likely be played for a judge and jury. My clients (trial lawyers) depend on me to provide an audio track with my video that will be perfect - there is no roome for error. Therefore, constant monitoring of the audio stream is required. Comfort is critically important. As is high quality sound. The vastly different venues I work in provide audio recording challenges most professionals don't see.
I've used a variety of headphones, other lesser Sony products, some fairly decent Sennheisers, even some old Koss cans I had lying around. In the short time I've been using the 7509's I've been impressed by the greater range of ambient noise I'm hearing through the phones. I prefer a full size "ear", again for comfort, and the 7509's are very nicely padded even though - and this is one of my two complaints - they are a bit large for my head and I cannot position them "squarely" over my ears. My other complaint is the coiled cord. I'd prefer a "straight" cable for any number of personal reason but mostly because the coils tend to snag on things.
I've been more than satisfied using them for recreational listening as well ( sometimes lawyers are late for their depositions and an iPhone sounds pretty good while we wait.

I own both the 7506 and 7509. Frankly, I prefer the 7506 sound. Yes, the 7509 are a bit more robust and "professional" what ever that is, but for day to day work, I find myself grabbing the 7506's.

These cans are very flat and durable. The only thing i dislike is very objective - the bass. The bass disappears below 45HZ. Other frequencies as-they-are. For mastering these are good ones. If they were stolen i would buy cheaper ones MDR-7506 for $85, as 7506 have better bass and aluminium body. Though i find 7509 durable - as i use them 2 years there are no scratches nor scuffs, and i am NOT tidy user.

The MDR7509 HD has fantastic isolation and gives me crystal clear output.I used it while recording close to traffic while the subject I was recording was in a room.I was surprised because I did not have confusion with the outside noise and the sound i was recording. It's the most expensive headphones I have now but it's worth every penny.
