This little gadget is very handy for quick tape changes on my Sony HVR A1U. When mounted right it gives just enough room to eject and reload – Without taking the camera off of the tri-pod or mono-pod mount.
I would give it one more star, except that the small surface area where the camera contacts the mount can allow the camera to wobble slightly, as opposed to the camera mounting directly to a tri-pod adaptor plate. A re-design giving it more surface area to the rear and to the left of the plate would solve this problem.
Nonetheless, if you're careful with it, you can get a tri-pod mounted re-load down to about 20 seconds, where removing the camera from the tri-pod and mount, then reassembling them can add a minute or more of missed action.

I just received this spacer today for my A1U and although well made, it only works with one of three tripods and head combinations (an old Bogen 3021, and that is when the camera is flipped 180 degrees from the control handles).
Cavision's site says that you may not be able to remove the tape from some tripods. That should read any semi or professional tripod and maybe works with a small consumer tripod at best.

It allows access to the tape bay. It does not lock down completely, so there is some lateral slippage.

Having this RPSHCS Spacer has saved me a lot of time when changing tapes. My bottom loading Sony Camcorder is now a joy to use. I use to have to release the camcorder from the tripod (which took too much time). Now, I just open the cassette door on the tripod and exchange the tapes. The time saved make the RPSHC Spacer worth every dime. I would recommend it to anyone with a bottom loading camcorder.

I've used this spacer twice. It does the job but is not as sturdy as putting the camera directly on the tripod head. Obviously putting it on the tripod head isn't going to do you much good though, as you won't be able to change tapes without removing the camera from the head.

Comments about Cavision RPSHC Spacer for Smaller Camcorders:
My Sony A1U loads tape from the bottom - a real inconvenience. I use this thing to lift the camera high enough to enable me to reload tape when the camera is mounted on a tripod. The spacer is a "make do" workaround to accommodate a poor camera design - nothing more. The spacer provides a very small top surface upon which the camera rests. This needs to be larger to adequately stabilize the camera. As a result I feel that I need to exercise an extra amount of caution whenever using it.

Does exactly what its supposed to do but does feel like the camera looses a bit of stability from the lack of surface area touching the tripod.

The general complaint from HVR A1 users is access to the DV tape cassette when using a tripod due to the downward carriage design. This solves the problem by giving that crucial extra gap.

I think that it was a good idea. But after you have it on you can't get any decent shots any more because the camera is so wobbly. So I made a U-shaped hook that supports my camera. I can take that out when I need to change the tape.
Otherwise I was pretty disappointed with it

Comments about Cavision RPSHC Spacer for Smaller Camcorders:
If you have or plan to buy a smaller camera that loads tape from the bottom, this is a must have accessory. Even if you don't use it all the time, it's handy to have in your bag. This small, light weight spacer raises the camera about an inch off of your tripod mount plate or rail system mount base, and is a BIG time saver when changing tape or batteries. It dose make the camera slightly unstable, but I find that acceptable given the time saved when not having to reset a shot after a tape or battery change by completely dismounting the camera.

Excellent product. Use them on our Sony vid cams that load from the bottom (HVR-A1U). Works like a charm and stays put and stable on the tripod head. No trouble swapping tapes without having to remove cam from plate.
Extremely well built and durable as we shoot, well often.
Highly recommended.
Pro photographer and videographer.

a decent work around to sony's poor design. stresses the threaded mount over time and becomes a little wobbly.

Comments about Cavision RPSHC Spacer for Smaller Camcorders:
The spacer allows battery removal while mounted on most any tripod, however with my tripod head (Manfrotto 501HDV), you still have to remove the camera to change tapes. It does save having to remove the tripod plate however, which saves time. It is an improvement, but does not solve all problems. Also, if you attempt any type of moving shot using your tripod to steady the shot, you will get some vibration or slight rocking due to the narrow base of the spacer. Again, not a big problem, but something to keep in mind.

Not much to describe other then its solid anodized aluminum, not plastic, bolts on just like it should and lets you swap tapes without unbolting your tri-pod mount.

This is a great product! Makes getting to your tape door easy and fast without having to unscrew the tripod mount in order to change tapes.
PROS: I found this very handy when tranfering my video to the PC for editing.
CONS: The base that attaches to the cam could be a little larger in order to spread the weight out more across the frame.

I like to use my hdv camcorder on a platform with handles and a flexible arm to attach a shotgun mic, or mic receiver. Using this meant I don't have to detach the camcorder so that I can change the tape. Simple as that. Saved me 15 minutes on my last shoot.

Comments about Cavision RPSHC Spacer for Smaller Camcorders:
I got the Sony HVR-A1U camcorder for our school's Media Services Department. Great camcorder-produces very high quality footage at a reasonable price. And it's small, easy to use in the field. Biggest gripe is the bottom-loading tape well, which means you have to take it off the tripod every time you want to change tapes. But the CA vision RPSHC spacer cured that! It holds the camera solidly and makes the tape well accessible without taking it off the tripod. Now I can use the camera anywhere I want for run-and -gun coverage.
Expertise: Professional
Problems Encountered: None. A local videographer was so impressed when he saw this gadget he bought three of them - and three camcorders to go with them!
