My kit was shipped without instructions. It was simple enough to figure out, but it did come with an extra piece of nylon fabric that fastened inside the softbox. Smith-Victor was easy to talk to, explaining that it was to be used with directional, halogen bulbs that are smaller than the included tungsten bulb. The stand is great and durable for the money.

I went for this softbox because of the great price and the fact that it would work with the photoflood bulbs I already use. It is poorly made, but I decided to keep it anyway, because for the price it gets the job done. It is extremely difficult to put together and the instructions are useless. I couldn't do it myself -- I needed someone stronger to help me -- although it does get easier to assemble the more times you do it. Word to the wise -- the corner "pockets" referred to in the instructions are actually the edges where the velcro overlaps -- there is a small spot where the velcro is not sewn down all the way and this creates a "pocket."

I just moved it slightly and the bulb broke. Bought a few more bulbs. Turned it on, bulb fried. Put in another, moved the stand as carefully as possible and the bulb burnt out. Set up some shop lamps inside the soft box, eureka! Problem solved. Except the fire hazard factor.

Comments about Smith-Victor Economy Softbox 1 Light Kit (120V):
I am not new to photography, but am fairly new to studio lighting. I purchased this item as an entry level introduction to continuous lighting and softboxes.
As mentioned on some previous reviews, the instructions that accompanied the product are not for the product shipped. They were extremely difficult to understand. I was convinced I was going to break it as I attempted to assemble it. It was a true wrestling match...I finally won...
I will mention that the 500 watt bulb throws off a lot of light, which is good, but also throws off a LOT of heat. So much so that I'm not comfortable yet using this with children. Do purchase a sandbag or other weight because it is extremely tipsy once assembled.

Comments about Smith-Victor Economy Softbox 1 Light Kit (120V):
It is a great portable fixture! I've used it in the studio as well as on location. I am very happy with this product, I've used it in several portraits and it has worked perfectly. I will say that when you first assemble it, the process is difficult. The directions were not that helpful. But other that that, great product!

I'm new to the photography lighting game. Wanted a reasonably priced item to help with lighting. I am happy with what I got. Good size so it will be versatile. Not as hard to setup as other reviews have stated. Supplied bulb burnt out withing 5 minutes of use.

Comments about Smith-Victor Economy Softbox 1 Light Kit (120V):
Although I love the lighting kit and it adds the lighting I needed, the setup was very difficult.
There were two sets of instructions and neither matched the lighting kit. The only thing the instructions did helped with was giving me an idea of "how" it went together.
Although I would recommend this, one must be patient & careful in the assembly.

Comments about Smith-Victor Economy Softbox 1 Light Kit (120V):
I bought two of these kits for training video shoots in a classroom/office setting. Assembly was simple (ingenious design), and the light is bright and diffuse. The included standard 500W bulbs burn hot (as expected), but there were no heat issues with the housing or diffusers, and the lights were on three to five hours at a time and up to eight hours in a day. Great buy, excellent results, especially for online video and green-screen lighting.

This Light is perfect for video lighting in our studio for our on camera workshop.
Make sure to buy a sand bag for it, because it is top heavy. Most of this type of lighting is.
The price is right and it was hard to find the right price and the best product. Looks like I've found it.
