I listen to c/d's, audio streams and basic system generated audio. The sound is superb. The bass is oh so wonderful...the mid range fine and the treble precise. I've been using my Mac Book Pro to run them...and since I'm in 2 locations I bought and extra pair!
I'm unable to think of a single thing to criticize.
Look...they're a value at the price. However, given the quality of sound generated by them every dollar has been returned to me in pleasure.
Was I surprised! And am I happy!

I've been using Bose products since 1994 so I'll give you an honest view.
These 2.0 multimedia speakers are surprisingly good. They are actually a lot better than I expected. I don't know how they are designed but the tiny 2.5" driver does put out some low end. Obviously not subwoofer-type punch, but it definitely did impress me.
First Impressions:
Build quality is top-rate. These feel sturdy, they are heavy, and they look great. Contrary to what some others are saying, there is an on/off switch on this model. The one thing I miss is the status LED. If by accident, you leave the speakers on overnight and you come back early in the morning and they're still on and at full volume, you will be in for a surprise. Even cheap speakers come with a status LED light.
Sound:
As far as sound quality, like I said, this must have some type of special Bose structure inside because these speakers move some air. You can put your hand over the rear port and feel a good amount of air exiting the speaker. Maybe you could say it feels like you have a tiny subwoofer. Overall the speakers produced a very full sound. Some speakers with exaggerated bass remind me of people talking on radio talk shows. The bass sounds boomy and sloppy. That's not the case here, everything is "tight".
There is ZERO distortion with these speakers. Bose has some type of anti-clipping circuitry which equalizes the sound when played very loud. I think because of this, the speakers don't get painfully loud. I was actually expecting these to get a little louder but it's not that big of a deal --they are more than sufficient for a bedroom. The circuitry also prevents screeching when increasing or decreasing the volume. The clarity is exceptional. Guitar strings, funky music, and electronic music sound exceptional. I do believe bass is enhanced at the expense of midrange. I didn't feel a clear separation of the mids and lows. They were all squished in there. If you've been listening to halfway decent stereo speakers for some time, you will pick this out right away. It's not a fault, it's just that you can only do so much with a 2.5" driver. Also, this speaker has Bose TrueSpace technology so the stereo sweet spot is greatly enhanced. I was listening to them about three feet apart and you could tell the sound was "wider" than that. I want to say that I have a THX rated sound card and I am commenting on the sound from CD's, DVD's and MP3's. There is a huge difference in sound quality when listening to a CD and watching YouTube videos.
Conclusion:
I returned them because they did not meet my needs. If they were fifty bucks, then I would keep them and accept their limitations. For the asking price, you could get a 2.1 system that has some real punch.
If you are strictly looking for a 2.0 system and price is no issue and aesthetics mean more to you, then by all means get these because they are not that bad at all. My advice is you could go elsewhere considering the price and get yourself a better 2.1 setup which will reproduce your music and movies more realistically. What I'm trying to say is that these speakers are really good but in the end they will leave you wanting more. Good low-end punch will bring life your your music and movies. These come close but there's only so much you can design a 2.5" driver to do. Listen before you buy them.

Comments about Bose Companion 2 Series II Multimedia Speaker System (Graphite):
Nice sound, quite good bass given the small size and holds well at high volumes, which you would expect from Bose. I travel with these, they are a good compromise between size and performance.
The only reason not to give them 5 stars is that they don't have a power-on LED, and that the gain on the line in doesn't seem to allow me to crank them as loud as I would like from some devices (e.g. I use them with an Archos video system which at full volume is not as loud through these speakers as I would like).
Worth buying though.
I also considered the Creative Labs T20 which are dual cone and have tone controls, and more RMS power - the only reason I didnt get these is that I use these for business, and the T20's are ugly, with a bright yellow cone which looks like it is trying to immitate a ghetto-blaster. If you don't mind the look then the sound from these seemed a little fuller than the Bose.

Bose makes pretty good home audio products. These computer speakers fit with that. (Please do not mistake any Bose product for pro audio). The frequency response is not flat and they color your sound. They are eq'd for consumers. The lows are heavily boosted.
Also note that the power cable is not secured and falls out quite easily. You should tape the cable to the speaker to prevent it from randomly disconnecting.

I use these speakers for my laptop I take to teach. The speakers have enough volume so the class can hear yet they are small enough to travel.
If I could have one added thing to the speakers it would be a travel case for them.

I am really happy with these speakers
I can take them from my computer desk to the back patio, hook up my iPhone and enjoy internet radio with Bose clarity.
I do prefer to leave them unplugged when I'm not using them for an extended period of time because the wall plug-in tends to stay warm.

I bought a pair for my computer and got the Samsung sound bar for my TV. When I got home, I couldn't get the sound bar to work so I attached the Bose speakers to the TV and they were amazing. And small and beautiful to look at. So i went back and exchanged the Samsung for another pair of the Bose speakers. I LOVE them!

These speakers have a good mix of high and low, and are good for listening to presentations, VOIP. I cannot recommend them for music. I had thought that Bose would do better; it seems the Bose brand is not what it used to be.

BOSE speakers provide genuine sound to any listener. It doesn't matter where the sound is coming from, if BOSE speakers are used, the sound quality changes from being mediocre to excellent.

Comments about Bose Companion 2 Series II Multimedia Speaker System (Graphite):
For watching movies these speakers are pretty good if you are not into blowing your socks off with special effects sounds of crashes, explosions, etc. For listening to music they do not reproduce the full range of sound so if you are an audiophile these speakers will not please you. Also you will not be able to rattle the windows with their volume if that's your bag. For a very portable set of speakers they are quite adequate like a very portable radio which gives a pretty fair reproduction of musical sounds.

I forgot what good sound was like. I replaced 7-year-old, $15 speakers with these phenomena. I am blown away by their rich sound.
