Comments about Fujifilm FinePix S6000fd Digital Camera:
I've been interested in photography for many years, and haveused Nikon SLRs for the last 15 year. My first digital camera wasa Minolta S414, purchased in 2003. The Fujifilm S6000fdappealed to me as it had excellent ratings for the lensperformance and was SLR like with manual zoom. I've had afew weeks now and am very impressed with it's quality andperformance. I've read the manual (!) and used many of themodes including RAW and the museum mode (no sound orflash!). Overall if you want a SLR like digital camera anddon't want to pay $700 for a DSLR this is perfect. Comingfrom film cameras, I haven't missed the image stabilization. It's a large two handed camera and so encourages a steadygrip. To me the Olympus SP550 I use at work doesn't seemdramatically better even with image stabilization, and theFuji is more aimed at the interested photographer with moremanual modes and options, who know you can't hold a 300mmzoom steady at 1/60.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix S6000fd Digital Camera:
This camera ROCKS! It takes crisp, sparkling photos every time and has lots of very useful features. Fun to use and way affordable. I have a full Canon SLR system but wanted a smaller, lighter fixed lens digital SLR to take on an adventure into the rain forest.I like the Picture Stabilization mode for dark, dark scenes. It automatically select higher ISOs in low light situations. I took very usable photos of shamanic healings by candlelight at ISO 3200 wide open at 28mm and 1/4 second. This camera survived through rain, sweat, humidity, waterfalls, and my friends fall into a stream with it. Once dried off it kept on shooting!Best small camera I have ever had. A very fun toy for serious and almost-serious photographers. The photos are amazingly great!!

Problems Encountered: The battery cover opened accidentally and dumped my batteries onto the rainforest floor. Controls aren't quiet as easy to use as the ones on my Canon 20D. I'd like the camera to come out of hibernation by just pushing the shutter down half way. You have to turn it off and then back on afterit shuts down to conserve batteries. I did have XD card corruption problems but found out that these cards are notorious for this. They are not as stable as CF cards. Handle with care. The battery indicator only comes on when the batteries are almost gone. Keep backups handy.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix S6000fd Digital Camera:
This is not the equal of a DSLR, but it is still a great camera when used within its limits. I have a Nikon D50 with lenses from fisheye to long tele zoom, but this is often used as my walkaround camera and party/family gathering camera. It's smaller and lighter than a DSLR, yet it covers 28-300mm, a very useful range. I have a Kenko wideangle auxiliary lens that converts it to about 20mm ultrawide with decent quality. The built-in flash works very well and has a reasonably long reach. It does not have true image stabilization. Instead it raises the ISO to give a higher shutter speed to prevent blur. The problem is that the digital noise above ISO 800 is excessive so I do not use this feature. I use ISO 1600 and 3200 only when absolutely necessary.

I am an amateur and this camera was in my budget. It is really worth the money and more! There are so many options for getting some neat pictures. I LOVE the manual zoom, and I took some photos 1 cm away from a flower and they DO turn out as good as they say they will. This is a fantastic camera!!

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix S6000fd Digital Camera:
Before I begin my review proper, I must express than I amlargely comparing this camera to a couple 35mm SLRs I havepreviously used (Canon EOS Rebel with a midrange 35-135lens, and a fully manual Yashica with a 50mm lens). Idecided to purchase this camera largely for the amount ofmanual controls, as even with the Canon I almost exclusivelyused controls. This camera has exceed my expectations in some regards, butI have encountered a few disappointments. Overall, thecamera is extremely well designed and easy to use. If youare familiar with a 35mm film SLR, there is not a lot new toget used to. Controls are essentially the same as a filmSLR, and the feel of the camera is also similar though thecamera body is slightly smaller. The camera menus are easy to use, and with a few days ofplaying around with the camera all the controls can be foundquickly. (There is also an 'F-mode' button to quickly accessISO rating, image quality setting, and color mode.) The auto focusing ability of the camera is very good, thoughit does have trouble focusing in some circumstances, mostlyin macro and on scenes where auto focus has failed me onother cameras. (Manual focus can of course be used toovercome this, so it's not really a problem, but sometimesan inconvenience.) In Manual Focus mode, there is a focusassist (which can be turned off), and the center of theimage is enlarge to aid focusing (I am uncertain as towhether this can be turned off or not). I should also notethat there is a 'Super Macro' setting allowing for focusingas close as 1 cm (wide only), that is not listed on the'Specs' page. Also, aperture range differs from what isstated on the specs page; aperture ranges fromf/2.8(wide)-4.9(tele) - f/8.The image quality ranges from excellent to rather poor. Thecamera takes great images in the lower ISO rating modes:100, 200. Grain becomes noticeable at ISO 400, but isunlikely to raise complaints from anyone looking intopurchasing this camera or another in roughly its pricerange. At ISO 800 grain is definitely noticeable, and maydeter some people from wanting to use this setting. Grainbecomes an increasing nuisance at ISO 1600 and 3200, makingthese ISO settings essentially useless except for perhapsimages you plan to greatly decrease in size. But, as amentioned above, images are very good to excellent at thelower ISO ratings and is generally comparable to film atthese settings. Also, I recommend setting the SHARPNESS to'SOFT' to give a more film-like look to the images.Images sizes for what I have taken so far are: RAW: 13.0 MBFine quality JPEG: approx. 3-6 MB(I have not yet used the lower quality settings.)The LCD screen is very good. The EVF (Electronic ViewFinder) seems useless to me as it simply provides a lowerquality version of the LCD screen in a less convenientposition. There are many feature of this camera I have not yet used, such as the various flash modes, and therefore cannotreview. I have only used the video setting a couple times, but it seems to provide a decent video quality (at 640 x480) with good sound quality. For reference, a 2 GB cardwill hold about 29 minutes and 49 seconds of video (assumingthe 'Time Remaining' is accurate).
Problems Encountered: None, other than the aforementioned grain.
