This is a good camera. I with that Panasonic was not slowly phasing out the Mini DV line of cameras. I wanted to purchase an additional DVC60 or a DVC30 but those have been discontinued. My DVC60 has over 800 hours on it so I am hoping that this camera will have similar durability. It seems to me that the sensors on this camera are the same as the PV-GS320. The zoom range is the same also so it may have the same lens. This camera is lighter than the DVC60. Now I will get into some specific areas about this camera.
Picture Quality- When you set a custom white balance this camera will match up well with the DVC30 and DVC60, although with a little bit less contrast. The colors seem very slightly muted. Skin tones are nice and natural. Setting the white balance is a little clunky though. The resolution is nice with this camera.
Sound quality- The built in microphone sucks. It has a muffled sound pretty much all the time. and it lacks built in XLR inputs unless you get an adapter. This is not a huge issue for me though as I will often use this with multiple cameras, a switcher and an audio board with professional microphones.
Ease of use and features-
Viewfinder- Its basically a consumer viewfinder that is magnified. It does not even come close to the resolution of the viewfinders on the DVC30 and DVC60 which makes following the action at a sporting event harder. Its also harder to see if the focus is on or not.
Lens/Zoom/Stabilization- The lens is of decent quality, it is wide enough for most applications. It could zoom in a little bit more than 10x though. The zoom control is nice and smooth. At first I was disappointed that it could not zoom faster but realized that if I have a less experienced person running the camera it might be good to have a zoom that is not as touchy. The stabilization is much better than what I expected. I was a little worried about the electronic stabilization as opposed to the optical, but it turned out ok. It would have been nice to have a Lanc or Panasonic input for a handle mount zoom control, but for the price you can't get everything.
Ease of use- This camera could have more buttons instead of having everything menu driven. I change white balance frequently and need custom white balances to be set. Yes you can do it with this camera but you have to work your way through the menu to do it. I was impressed though when the camera was set to full automatic. The white balance and exposure changed smoothly and were accurate which is unusual for an automatic setting. Oh, the camera seems to forget some of the manual settings or wants you to re-set them after powering down or changing batteries.
Overall- You get what you pay for. If I had really wanted and needed the inputs or manual controls that other cameras have then I would have had to spend the extra money for that. If I had really wanted larger CCD's I would have needed to spend more money. For what I do, I do not need HD, I do not need XLR inputs on all my cameras, I do not need super zoom ability on all my cameras, I do not need lots of buttons for every function of the camera. This camera does the job for what I need it to do and does it well. If you really do need those other functions then spend the money on a different camera. If you do not need those functions then this camera will be an awesome camera for you.

I use camera for live presentations (weddings, church presentations, etc). Therefore it is necessary to go into and out of auto focus, auto iris, and auto W.B. directly and quickly. You can't do that with the DVC20. Eventually you can make those changes by going into menus and sub-menus, but it takes too long. The viewfinder is a little soft, there are no color bars, and the auto focus is a little slow. The picture is good however and it fits nicely on your shoulder. [...] upgrade to a DVX100B which allows quick and easy changes into auto functions when needed.

This camcorder is nice for the beginner. Good to use as an emergency back up camcorder. It's easy and fun to operate. It's good for low budget events. It's not however, ideal for the professional videographer. Picture quality is okay, but not the best. It uses mini-DV tape to record on. Can't switch from external mic to camera mic without removing sound jack. It does however, have an audio bar inside the viewfinder so you can monitor your sound correctly.

We use it to record worship services for the church. Picture quality is very good, especially in low light situations. Using tapes is a bit of a drawback, especially having to copy to a computer in real time, but for the money you can't beat it!

I've been a legal videographer since 1986. This camera meets every need and then some. The colors are vivid and crisp, audio could be better with an XLR input, but for the price ... this camera is the best. The light weight and ease of use are two very big pluses for me. I use a IEEE 1934 FireWire cable to connect the camera to my Panasonic DMR-EZ48V DVD recorder to burn a DVD at the a legal deposition.

Comments about Panasonic AG-DVC20 Camcorder:
the best thing about this camera honestly is that it looks cool! however honestly you could get a much better mini DV cam, honestly i feel very ripped off by Panasonic! i am a videographer and photographer and i got this as a second cam, because it was priced nicely and appeared to have the functionality to boot, but man i could not have been more wrong, so much so that if you ever wanted to sell this cam later down the line people would probably give you money to keep it! it feels very cheap, it lacks any type of serious professional capability and the one lux that Panasonic bolsters about this unit is fictional at best! it might as well just be an old VHS camcorder! i really feel stupid for having paid $X,XXX for this camera when you couldn't sell it brand new for $XXX! trust me if you are serious about getting into this business stay away from this model camera and spend the extra money on a Panasonic that has real professional quality!

I use the camera tripod for soccer games I shoot for the team. Clear picture, shoulder rest for holding, easy tape load and eject, inexpensive format, easy to use right out of the box.
Works well with a tripod-recommend
Wish it had a more powerful zoom.
Still testing it's qualities and so far it's everything I thought it would be.

We are using two of these cameras for live video production... using DV to capture direct into a laptop for editing... the component/composite direct to the live swither. Nice clear shot, easy to operate, expect to get our moneys worth.

I've used these cameras for wedding videos and whenever the lighting is high the video results are great. The night mode isn't good at all. Sound is okay. Even lighting not too low the quality of the picture is not great. Great outdoor performance. Would recommend depending on location/lighting usage.

This is a great camera from a video output perspective. It is easy to operate and very lightweight. The low-light capability is great and it is easy enough for my video students to use without a lot of camera specific training.
The only downside, and this is a nit, is that for the price it should have included a firewire cable as part of the package.

I had a limited budget to work with so I purchased this camera. I used it at our family Thanksgiving gathering and was amazed at the quality of the video. It was easy to use, and not too heavy. The shoulder mount fits nicely.
I don't like the red record button next to the power switch.

Comments about Panasonic AG-DVC20 Camcorder:
This is the most reasonable camera out there. I'm just beginning to do events coverage and I had to have something that I can mount on my shoulder without going bankrupt. It seems that handheld camcorders, though good in performance will not cut it for the clients. It's really all about perception. On paper it would seem that the Panasonic GS250 will out perform the DVC20. But I was wrong when I tested both. Video performance is way better on the DVC20. Much wider and it gives better if not more natural colors. You really don't need the OIS on this since it's already shoulder mounted. But the EIS is still good to use and will not degrade the image quality much. The built in mic is sounds good enough though I haven't had the chance to use a shotgun mic for this. It's light weight and controls are pretty easy. You can use it immediately right off the box. And the free soft carrying case is excellent [...]t's not the best camcorder out there, but for what I intend to use it, it is JUST RIGHT.

Comments about Panasonic AG-DVC20 Camcorder:
Affordable, advanced amateur mini-DV camcorders were becoming hard to find when I settled on the DVC20 last year. A good machine for those who desire simple controls, and are O.K with mini-jacks. If you MUST HAVE a headphone and mic jack for documentary interviews, this camera does the job quite well. This is not a good camera for field work, you can do better for less money. For example, my pair of Panasonic GVS500's (a victim of HD) are smaller, better constructed, and provide better image quality and sound for less money. I bought this larger machine strictly for the seperate mic and headphone jacks and have not regretted it. Mini-DV cams are disappearing fast. If you still feel comfortable with tape, buy one before they are gone. Just be sure and purchase a brick of high end tape stock to go along with. Panasonic's tapeheads choke on the cheaper stuff. Don't cut corners. This machine insists on 63 minute Master Quality tapes.

good for producing low end home movies when you are on a budget, however the PVGS 400 worked superb and the colour from the pvgs 500 was excellent..too bad this camera does not have the 1/4.7 inch ccd and a leica lens found in the PVGS 400 , but it does the job well

I love this camera it is lighter than it looks and that is a HUGE plus when you are working all day.
Someone mentioned that it was NOT for Family use, but I would disagree. I have taken this on MANY family trips, and the footage just blows everyone away!!!
I will say I am (only slightly) dissapointed in the manual zoom buttons. They take some getting used to and are quite touchy. Easy to fix after the first time or two, but it can be an issue to be fair.
I use this camera both professionally and for my own personal use, and it is very easy to work with. Just love this camera for the money, are there better cameras out there? Sure but you will pay A LOT more!!!

[...]First I compared it side by side against my sony VX2100. Due to the lens being smaller on the panasonic i thought no way, but the panasonic held it's own just fine under a number of situations. I found it easy to operate, great image, matched very well with the sony and can't complain for the price!I get about 1 1/2 hours from my bateries, not bad either! For a portable field camera, I'm very pleased.
