Photo of product on Web Page is deceiving. I couldn't believe the miniature dimensions of it when it arrived. 4.5" & 4.5" by .75"! This miniature giant-of-a-recorder is a highly respectable tool for any musician, which I am. Can't believe the true quality of the digital image it captures. Have had it about 3 weeks and find the basic recording process most user-friendly. Still discovering the many subtleties of the system. Only reservation about the package is the design of the included stereo mike. The clip for situating it is impractical. Another design is evidently available, but wasn't provided in my order. No matter, the recorder is compatible with my other mikes, providing beautiful results. How cool to take this baby on gigs! It's great that the data can be down-loaded to my Mac for editing and burning CD's. A long-awaited answer to my search for a practical, portable recording device.

The recorder itself can record quite well, the problem is it is too fragile, has a painfully difficult series of menus to navigate, and can only copy once because of copy protections built in. The last thing is the most irritating, to have restrictions on your OWN original recordings. I would be unhappy to have bought it except I have a collection of MDs that I need to be able to play. The transfer software which is used to import the recording to the computer is Sonic Stage. The program is so dumb if your hard drive is full and you try to copy your files to it, the device churns for 20 minutes, then says the disk is full. If you need to buy a device because of compatibility reasons, get it, but otherwise, buy a flash card recorder. Minidiscs are obsolete. This is too fragile to be considered a professional recorder.

Comments about Sony MZ-M200 Hi-MD Recorder with Stereo Microphone:
I have had this MD recorder only a couple of weeks and am already pleased with it. I have already been able to put 10 regular sized MDs on the 1G disk and still have plenty of room for more! The only thing I haven't figured out yet is how to make a play list so I can use it as an accompaniment to our singing ministry.

Comments about Sony MZ-M200 Hi-MD Recorder with Stereo Microphone:
I use this product to record music in church and other venues and find that it is easy to set up and use. Moreover, because of it's size, it is very convenient to carry around and to handle. The quality of the recording is high, but I have yet to find its capabilities for manual recording rather than automatic level control recording.

Comments about Sony MZ-M200 Hi-MD Recorder with Stereo Microphone:
I upgraded from a previous Sony model to the MZ-M200 so I could transfer recordings to a computer and subsequently burn CDs. I truly have no complaints regarding the overall sound quality. It's a good little device that proves to be very convenient size-wise. That's exactly why I was interested in merely upgrading to a newer model. What I unfortunately found out was how dysfunctional and "touchy" the Play/FF/RW button is on this particular model. In not so many words, it a real drag! Period. I record a lot of rehearsals and do a lot of playback, and what ends up happening is the scan and skip option on this button seem to operate on its own accord, depending on it's momentary mood. In the beginning it seemed like I could live with it, but it's amazing how the inconvenience has added up! So yeah, it's driven me a little crazy. I wish I had stuck with my earlier model.

Comments about Sony MZ-M200 Hi-MD Recorder with Stereo Microphone:
This little thing is great. For listening, the digital amp sounds really good. Better than that of an iPod which is rated for 2x as much power and many people acclaim. Recording quality is excellent, its like having a cd recorder in your pocket. The supplied micorphone makes really clear recordings. For live shows, as an amateur taper I couldn't be happier with it with the exception that it doesn't pick up as much bass as I would like and the separation is nothing to write home about, but you won't really have much luck finding something as small that does a better job, go and get another plug in power mic or use a power module for a higher quality mic. One con about the mic is that the wire is a little short, but its nothing a 5 dollar trip to [...] won't fix.The player itself is really small, light and sturdy. It looks great and feels dense and compact in your hand. My only gripes are 1. The FF/FR/Pause/Play switch on the side feels fragile. 2. There are functions on the recorder only accessible from the supplied remote such as track titling and sound processing. The sound processing settings are pretty standard but it does have a feature that i really enjoy. This is the dynamic volume normalizer function. I listen to alot of recordings of live shows and it really helps to smooth out the sound of the recording in times when you can tell someone walked in front of the mic or when the taper moved, etc. I think it makes some recordings sound more consistent. All in all, this is a very versatile little gadget, it fits in your pocket, can be taken anywhere and creates exceptional 'tapes'.

Comments about Sony MZ-M200 Hi-MD Recorder with Stereo Microphone:
This unit is great since you can connect to your computer load music just like any other digital music player.
The software for this unit is better on PC then Mac. On a PC you can do a lot more....Load CD with disc info, move songs off the MD to you computer, burn a CD of the music and more. On a Mac, not so much. I was not able to get any of my MD disc to recognized.
Over all this package come with a lot of extra like, mic, remote. This unit is a lot more expensive any other portable MD Recorders out there but it's worth it.

Comments about Sony MZ-M200 Hi-MD Recorder with Stereo Microphone:
I purchased the MZ-M200 for its ability to upload recordings directly to my PC, and especially for its ability to upload old recordings made using my old NetMD device. I make recordings of family members' musical performances for their own review but also to enjoy the performances as well. I do not use the M200 to store/transfer any other type of data.
I haven't had time to do detailed analysis, but the recording capabilities are as good as they have ever been. Recording is easy to affect, and all the great things about the audio quality are all still there.
The not so great thing is that you CANNOT upload NetMD recordings using the Mac OS X software; this software only allows uploading of Hi-MD recordings. To get around this, I installed a trial version of Parallels so that I can install SonicStage, which WILL allow transfers of NetMD recordings. I then spent some marathon sessions just uploading all my old recordings.
Related to this is, of course, that Sony no longer really supports this product line, so there will not be any more enhancements, software or hardware. Hmm... maybe I should buy another one of these things in case my current one breaks down?

Comments about Sony MZ-M200 Hi-MD Recorder with Stereo Microphone:
I bought this unit last month and would say it has exceeded all my expectations! This is my 3rd MD recorder to date and the best I have owned. It makes great recordings from the stereo, computer, or through a microphone. One Hi-MD disc gives up to 34 hours of music and still gives great sound because of the ATRAC3plus compression. Sound is better than any iPod I have heard and my kids have several of them. This is one great unit and B&H is a great company to buy from.

Comments about Sony MZ-M200 Hi-MD Recorder with Stereo Microphone:
I am a long time MD user. I bought this product primarily to replace an older sony minidisc recorder which I have had since 1999 (it still works). I was also looking for a more convenient way to add recordings to my Macintosh laptop, to listen to recordings in iTunes, and burn recordings to CD's. I record guitar practice / jam sessions with a microphone and then listen to them later. I simply set up the microphone in the room and press record.
It's just as straight forward as older models. It also will play old format MD. But recordings must be in Hi SP or PCM linear to drag and drop on to the laptop.
It remains a mystery why there is no optical line out in the portable MD recorders. There are a couple nit - picking issues I could mention. But overall it does what I had hoped it would. I'm happy that I bought this product

I use this device to capture vows at weddings I video. I have always needed a low-cost, compact, sound recorder that is easy enough to teach a groom to use in only a few minutes. Having the Sony DCR-VX2100, lavalier mics are not an option if I want ambient sound as well. This device has solved all my issues. Great performance, and incredibly easy to use!!
