I've been using the DVM-700US since late August with great results. DV/DVCAM playback has been fine, transfers without any dropout to the HD or DVD record. Recording from the DV or line inputs to either to the HD or DVD have also worked without any problems. High speed copies from the hard drive to DVD have also worked without any problems.Being able to do basic cuts only editing on the Hard Drive section is a useful feature Being able to record directly to DVD then do a quick finalize has been a time saver for several situations. The 700U works well as a production tool, while the manual does a good job explain various functions, most can be figured out without it.

Problems Encountered: So far no problems that could not be figured out or found in the manual.

My first few months with this unit were great. It came in handy while making quick raw footage dubs from mini-DV to DVD as well as creating straight transfers of external analog sources. We perform a good deal of video transfers in our business and got a lot of good looking discs from the machine until a month ago, when the DVD burner portion of the machine just stopped writing discs. The unit would stop recording only seconds into making a disc and then eject it, serving up coaster after coaster. The unit was promptly removed from our setup and sent to JVC for service. They replaced the DVD writer for free as it is still under their original warranty, but it is extremely inconvenient to have to pull apart all the equipment to send it in. I hope that this replacement writer is better than the first one. The last thing I need is to have to send this in for service every 6-7 months! This is very reminiscent of the ongoing problems I've had with another JVC deck, the SR-VS30 (mini-DV and S-VHS)- which periodically needs its mini-DV side completely replaced!
In summary, JVC has invented some very ingenious products focused at the event video market, but they have unfortunately, missed the mark in the durability department completely.

Comments about JVC SR-DVM700 3-in-1 Video Recorder/Player:
It will transfer from a analog source to DV, DVD, or hard drive. Will not transfer from hard drive to computer. If your goal is to move video files into a computer for editing, there are cheaper ways to go. If you want stand-alone transfer to DVD, it works but is expensive. No support from JVC. The item has been discontinued and you cannot download drivers. Basic drivers on MAC work for video capture from DV or DVD but not hard drive.

I use this a DV deck to transfer video to my computer via FW400. This will save my camera a ton of wear and tear and gives my studio and more professional look. The only thing I would like to see is to capture analog video the HDD and then just drag and drop the file to my computer, freeing up production time. I've been using the 600 for quite some time and needed a second deck. Haven't had any problems so far. Great deal for the serious video producer and editor.

We use this product to capture video from our church services. It is also helpful to pull the video later and add to our website. Have not yet learned the bad stuff yet.

Conceptually, this is a wonderful product- Mini-DV, DVD, HD- all in one with the ability to transfer to different mediums through firewire. But, I've experienced the same problem many have mentioned: The DVD portion quit working 6 months after I bought it; just says "defective DVD", with all DVDs I try. Do I get it repaired? We'll see how that goes.
Comments about JVC SR-DVM700 3-in-1 Video Recorder/Player:
I have had this unit for about 9 months. I have had manyproblems with the DVD portion of the unit. Mostly it hasstopped reading any kind of disk for playback and now willno longer record or finalize disks. The DV deck works wellfor playback and interacts well with final cut pro forlogging video. It looked promising in the catalog but I'mdisappointed with the quality from JVC.

I have this unit and have had a lot of problems with it. The recording quality is poor due to drop outs and video artifacts. The display does not reveal tracking info when recording to DV. Many other little bugs also. Very disappointing.
