The Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens is a wide-angle to telephoto zoom lens that features Nikon ED glass, aspherical lens elements and SWM (Silent Wave Motor) for enhanced performance. With a focal length range of 18-135mm, the lens is suitable for a wide variety of shooting situations; from sports, action and portraits to wide-angle landscapes. I bought this lens based in large part on the testing and conclusions in this review: [@] write and shoot for a small town weekly newspaper. Most pictures I take are candids -- a lot of faces-n-places, some accidents and the occasional sports or beauty shot. Having one lens that can fulfill ninety percent of my needs, and leave no guessing about sharpness, edge-to-edge consistency and dependable perrformance is a plus. Add the light weight, low price and perfect match to my D40 and the 18-135mm is hard to beat. This lens shoots wide enough, long enough and fast enough for nearly situation our style of story coverage demands.Caveats? Yes. It is slow and, as a result, autofocus -- indoors and at night -- isn't lickety-split. It has no Vibration Reduction (VR) which means I won't be getting rid of my mono or tri pod any time soon. On the up side, no lens creep, it is quiet, feels durable enough for the day-to-day and produces clean, sharp, color-accurate shots. For what it's worth, I compared this lens side-by-side and shot-for-shot with 18-200mm zooms from Tamron and Sigma. The obvious image softness, distortion throughout the zoom range and uneven build quality in both aftermarket lenses left me wondering exactly what I would be spending my money on. Convenience? Yes, both the Sigma and Tamron offer an extra 65mm of reach, but both were soft and distorted at 18-28mm and above 125mm.Granted, the 18-135 doesn't have the cache' of Nikons 18-200, but it tests better and is a heckuva lot cheaper.

Great lens but...
This lens came with Nikon D40 kit Nikon D40 DIGITAL SLR CAMERA w/18-135mm - NID4018135 that I bought right here in B&H on 7/9/08 (10 months ago).
This lens came with Nikon D40 kit Nikon D40 DIGITAL SLR CAMERA w/18-135mm - NID4018135 that I bought right here in B&H on 7/9/08 (10 months ago).
I love the D40 and the lens' incredible range (from very wide angle to a decent tele in a relatively compact package. I used it all around, all over the place, came in great on vacations because I stopped carrying other lenses and cameras. It was such a versatile combo, I would find that even though I had packed other cameras and lenses the only one unpacked and used was the D40 and this lens.
However, a couple of months ago it started taking longer to focus and other times the photos were sharp, but not quite as sharp as they could be.
One day it started AF hunting to the point it just stopped focusing. It hunts for a long while until it gives up. I could use it in manual mode but it is hard to focus this lens manually in low lighting or close quarters. My other cameras/lenses have easier to focus screens that make it obvious when it is focused.
I thought I was the only having this problem until I logged in earlier today. I checked the D40 kits looking for reviews but found none with this lens. When I searched the full name/part number found that B&H has the kit listed as "discontinued". (cut and paste the kit part number and see for yourself).
The lens will be on its way to Nikon now for repair so no quick resolution to my problem. Yes I have other Nikon lenses but none will work AF with the D40. So I will probably pick up another lens for the D40 since the other reviews make it clear this is not an isolated occurrence.
I give it 3 stars because it was such a good asset when it did work.

Bought the D80 kit and this lens failed right out of the box, all my other Nikon lenses work fine (35-70 2.8, 70-300 4-4.6, 300 4.0, 105 2.8, 16 2.8) so it's not really and issue but a quick search of this internet reviles that a lot of people have AF problems, while my seems to be the lens contacts not connect with the body contacts just inside the lens mount.

The optics are pretty good but I love the versatality that this focal length gives you. I can shoot basketball full court and get great action at the far end... I would love to have a wider lens but for now this works great.

Looking at the choices for a D60 for my wife, the kit lense 18-55 was too short for what I knew my wife wanted, the 18-200 was too heavy and would blow the budget (besides I have one already if she want's to use it). The 18-135 was just the right size.
My wife is very happy with it, and the pictures she is taking are quite a bit better than what she gets with a point and shoot.

The wide angle gives me the photos like. Leaving room to crop. The SWM is great. I would recommend this lens to other photographers that use Nikon DSLR cameras.

This lens came with my Nikon D80(when they were still being made) and this was a great deal. This is the Swiss army knife of all lenses. It gives great constant output. I use this lens when im not sure what im going to be shooting and i always get great results with it. The 18mm is great for landscapes and general photo taking. The zoom up to 135mm gives you alot of freedom to "crop" easily and zoom in on wildlife or anything else your taking pictures of. This lens is amust have!

This is a great lens for when I'm walking about a lot and changing lenses isn't convenient; e.g., walking around NYC or, as last weekend, on a trip to Cape Cod with seven other people. Also when the weather is such that changing lenses is risky, such as a windy day on the Cape Cod dunes!

I use the product with my Nikon D300, and I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoy the lens. I have a polarizer going as well to help me get some higher quality images and needless to say, it does the job to a "t." Nikon's glass has always been held in high regard in my book, and as always, this lens comes through with flying colors, literally.

I use this lens for real state use and i like that i have both wide and some what long lens in one. But it's very fragile, don't drop it cause it'll brake, I've had to replace it twice now.

Comments about Nikon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ED-IF AF-S DX Lens:
I picked this lens up for the range 18 to 135 mm,
my standard kit lens were 18 to 55 and 55 to 200.
I find for purposes of travel and not needing to
change lens this is a most have if you cannot
afford the 18 to 200 mm lens. I have read a number
of reviews that the mount is not as beefy as the more expense units, plastic versus metal. This would be a concern if you are swapping lens more often then not. I like the convience of use, again it is affordable, my next lens would be a
17 to 55 2.8 (need to save up for that, looking to have a fast lens).
So I am happy with the performance of this unit,
I do need to use it more,

This lens is a great semi-wide to semi-telephoto lens with the peace of mind of being a Nikkor manufacture. This lens replaced the 18mm to 55mm and is now my primary lens. I have had no issues or problems with this lens and I would highly recommend it to anyone, professional photographer, hobbiest, or just starting out.
