I use this lens mainly for photography in wildlife parks, as well as for hiking (Personally I'd take a lighter tele lens when hiking...). I've also used it occasionally for outdoor sports in good light and it is awesome. (use a wider angle lens and get up close to the action if possible - thats my take)
VR works very well, just make sure you let it spool up. Works great with static subjects at suboptimal shutter speeds. Moving subjects? Bump up your iso and get a faster shutter mate. There is a secondary vr mode for use in vehicles, make sure you don't use it for normal use as I've experienced it adding blur instead.
Sharpness is generally very acceptable for a non-pro level lens. I usually need to fire it wide open for the fastest shutter, 300mm @ 5.6 - and the prints are fine (8x12in, 11x16in) - a little sharpening, but more of it is technique. Rarely use it at different focal lengths. For web use? Its way sufficient.
Focus speed is pretty fast. Obviously not pro level lens fast, but is sufficient.
It's got a rubber gasket at the end. Not sure if it's weather resistant or not but I've used it in pouring rain and attacked by water sprinklers and its still kicking. Make sure your body can take it of course!
Zoom is smooth. No creep. The M/A focusing is really nice, if used rarely.
Lens hood comes with it, and it's pretty large. But still the lens + hood + body balances reasonably well.
Bokeh (for me) is on the harsher side. If you pick a low contrast background, it's very very good. But in my experience a high contrast background does tend to show harsher bokeh.
I'd definitely recommend it as general purpose lens for use in good/average light, it's not very useful off a tripod in low light situations. Very good for travel, imo. Pack this with a 16-85 and I'm set for mostly anything.
Good/Great:
- Largish, but still reasonable weight and portable
- 70-300 very good range
- VR works as advertised.
- Hood + Pouch included
Not so great:
- Makes people gawk at you, at times.
Thoughts:
It's a great lens for the price, and if you move between DX or otherwise, it'll still work. Just don't compare it to primes costing 4-10 times the price.

If you need to use the range of about 220mm to 300mm, and you need it to be sharp at 100 percent magnification, you'll be disappointed. I tried both manual and auto focus but couldn't get sharp shots at the full 300mm. I called a large Washington, D.C., area camera store and they said their rental 70-300 VR is the same way. Check out the photo blogs, like [@], and you'll find the same information. If you just shoot your kids and use the photos small in the Internet or make 4x6 prints, you'll swear it's sharp at the higher telephoto range. You'll be wrong.

Comments about Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Telephoto Zoom Lens:
Exactly what I expected - great zoom, fast focus even at max zoom, VR II doing wonders for those zoomed photos. Starting to save for 28-300 glass so I dont have to constantly change lenses (between my 18-55 and that). Other than this is perfect and my recent trip to NZ Bay Of Islands resulted in some impressive photos.

I bought this lens for baseball and football photos of my son. I tried it out during a basketball game and was pleasantly surprised at how the pictures turned out. I also bought an 85mm f1.8 and ended up returning it because I thought this lens took better basketball photos. It's also great for portraits and stills. Great lens!

Got this as a refurbished lens. Seems like new and is very sharp even at 300 except wide open. The autofocus works great in good light which is all I expect and more from this lens. It is a very good complement to my 17-50 and has been on my D7000 constantly since it arrived.

Great at the zoo, landscapes, train shooting, portraits. Sharper than expected at the 250-300 end if you close it down a stop or so. Not too heavy, even on a DX camera. AF a little slower in low light on a D7000.

Comments about Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Telephoto Zoom Lens:
I bought this lens along with Tamron's new 70-300mm VC for more reach to shoot birds and other wildlife after hearing such good things about it. I shot test charts with a tripod at various apertures and focal lengths and also took both lenses into the field. I fully expected the Nikon to be better. But I was wrong. It was noticeably softer than the Tamron especially at the longer focal lengths. The difference was so obvious (even at 33%, much less 100%) that I wondered whether I just got a bad lens so I got another new Nikon and repeated the tests. Same result. I had expected some softness, but not this much. All of my other lenses are Nikon so I really hesitated, but in the end I returned both of the Nikons and have been incredibly pleased with the Tamron since.

This is an excellent lens. I purchased it with a D7000 body and got a flat discount of $200 !!
As far as the performance of the lens is concerned, its outstanding.
Autofocus is very fast, VR works pretty well. I could get a night skyline of manhattan across the hudson with no tripod at around 170 mm
The bokeh comes out too good. On the cons side, its a little too heavy if you hand around your neck and plan to carry all day long. But I was aware of that before I purchased, so I shouldn't complain. The pictures come out so good, that you would not regret carrying the bulky lens.

Recently got this, was debating over the 55-200m, and I am very happy I made this choice.
The extra 100mm is VERY useful for games, sports, wildlife, etc. The VR on the lens is very good! It acts like you're not even shaking the camera.
I usually hold myself and shoot very still even at 300mm it's barely even noticeable, but the VR makes it even better.

I shoot a mostly portraits and building details. The VR works well for closeups to about 250-275. It does show a little shake at full 300 but not all that much. Should be woth the money for most people.

I bought this lens to photograph my Grandson's football games. I really wasn't sure what I needed - but this worked out fantastic. I get incredible shots and a lots of ohhs and ahhs! The lense is heavy, but I can put up with that if I can continue to take great shots!

I purchased this lens to use primarily for my daughters taekwondo tournaments and received it less than a week prior to her competition for AAU Team Trials. I tried to work with it the day piror to flying out so that I would have some experience and spent about 30 minutes taking outside photos of a friends son at a footall stadium. The next use was at Team Trials in Fort Lauderdale. I love it and I'm so happy that I purchaed the lens.

I'm the social user, but like to take action shots at my niece's soccer games. This lens is perfect for the action shots and can't wait to do some exploring.
I got interested when Nikon advertised a used lens. When I checked BH, their price was cheaper than the Nikon used price.

Comments about Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Telephoto Zoom Lens:
I bought this lens to go on safari in Kenya and Tanzania as I had no telephoto lens for my D80. I decided to pay several hundred dollars more for this lens with VR reduction, a big investment for me.
After day one of use I was in love with it. Shooting in low light and moving vehicles would have been impossible without the VR reduction and I can confidently say I would have messed up my greatest images had it not been for it. The VR (and a tripod) enabled me to take great photographs even when our driver was moving.
Bottom Line:
If you always plan on having a tripod with you, you could probably save a lot of money with a cheaper lens.
If you want a high quality lens with the ability to shoot in motion and low light, I'd argue that this one a valuable player for your arsenal. Just be sure you have a solid bag to protect it.
Either way, you could always resell it in good condition for less than if you rented.
