The Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens is a peerless super fast standard lens featuring an ultra-large aperture for a narrow depth of field and soft background blur so loved by photographers everywhere. The lens is suitable for any shooting situation; its lens coating and construction are optimized to minimize the ghosting and flare that frequently occurs when lenses are used with digital cameras.
This high-performance, weather-resistant lens delivers all the superb image resolution and contrast one can expect in a Canon L Series lens.

First off this isn't a "standard lens", it's unlike any 50mm lens currently in production. The ef 50mm f/1.2L is a specialty lens.
I know, your asking "How can a 50mm be a specialty lens"? To answer the question you have to understand exposure. Actually, you have to be a "master" of exposure. When you set this baby to f/1.2 it creates the most creative DOF you can imagine. It also creates the perect creamy "bokeh". No Zeiss or Leica lens can coe close.
The problem is many people buy this lens and don't understand that it's designed for creative compositions when used wide open. The DOF is so shallow, that everything but the area in focus will immediately begin to "blurr", or get soft. If you look at examples from the guys who love this lens - you see they are "masters" of creative DOF compositions. The "guys" who hate this lens, Shoot it wide open, and can't figure out why most of the photo is soft. People say it's soft in the corners, wide open. True, but that's because the DOF is "Razor" thin.
If you back it down to f/2, it will preform as good as any other 50mm - better even. But if that's what you looking for, than buy a cheaper 50mm. Like the ef 50mm f/1.4. BTW, the f/1.2 still outpreforms the 1.4 when stopped down - beter Bokeh is better bokeh. And don't listen to the guys who say the sigma 50mm f/1.4 produces "the same bokeh". No where near it.
This is a perfect lens, if you know how to use it, and trully understand exposure. Do you want to add a creative element to your work, become a "bokeh" master, or take unique Wedding/portrait photos? Then look no further. But be prepared to to practice and think outside the "Box".
I don't mean to be rude. But If you just set you DSLR to "P". or a pre set, then don't waste your money. Because your never understand this lens, or how to get the most from it

A Necessary evil
I shoot a wide variety of subject matter for my work and, because I exclusively use full frame Canon bodies and always try to use prime lenses, a 50mm is almost mandatory.

I shoot a wide variety of subject matter for my work and, because I exclusively use full frame Canon bodies and always try to use prime lenses, a 50mm is almost mandatory.
I have owned the EF 50mm f1.4 for years and it is a really good lens. Unfortunately, it is not a truely great one as it flares, focuses erratically and suffers from chromatic aberration, amongst other things.
I assumed the 50mm f1.2L would have to be much better because it is much heavier, many times the price and only a third of a stop faster. I was wrong. For examle, compared to my Mk. I 85mm f1.2, (which it is in the same "family" as) it is very poor. The later 50mm f1.2 should have built on this 20 year old design but it went backwards.
In some ways it is better than the EF 50mm f1.4. It has less flare and it is sharper to about f4 but it still has chromatic aberration, it is only acceptably sharp in the centre and it really suffers with back focussing and erratic focussing problems. I have paid Canon several times to try and get this lens to focus reliably, ( and had it done under warranty too). I have now given up and and accepted the best compromise after many hours of micro-adjustment with my camera bodies. I just shoot a lot of frames wherever possible. If I can get away with it I manually focus with live view or, even better, use my old Zeiss f1.4 plannar. In all I have 9 L series lenses and this has been the only truly troublesome one. My colleges are having similar problems with them. I would be o.k. about it if this didn't cost almost as much as the last car I could afford.
Australian photographers are rarely rich but, like other professionals, we get in trouble if we don't produce sharp photos. If you need the best compromise to do your job and they pay you well enough, this might be it but, otherwise, get the 50mm f1.4. It is a fraction of the price and, in in many ways it is the better lens. Now, why did I sell mine? . . . Better get another one.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Autofocus Lens:
This lens is a mini-85mm f/1.2L lens. Using the 50mm on my 1D3 gives me an effective 65mm which is great for portraits whereas the 85mm gives me an effective 110mm which is rough for spots with space constraints. Advantage of the 50 is that you can be closer to your subject. Has the same wonderful bokeh as the 85mm... has the same closeness of the glass to the mount (be careful). Read the nay-sayer reviews and the ones who loved it and since B&H has a return policy, decided to give it a try to see for myself. This lens is definitely a keeper.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Autofocus Lens:
I bought this lens as addition to the 50/1.4 EF lens which I used since a number of years. The 50/1.2 L shines where the 50/1.4 has limitations: a lot better AF of the L lens even in dim light conditions (used with a 5D II camera) at f/1.2. The lens creates wonderful depth of field effects with smooth bokeh. The lens construction is different from the 50/1.4 EF lens - a lot more light is able to enter the 50/1.2 L lens which enables excellent low light shots without additional light source. The lens is well built, very rigid lens body. The 50/1.2 L can also focus much more closely to a subject than the 50/1.4 EF lens.
Only con is the high price tag, but you get what you are paying for.

Having bought and sold this lens three times, I've settled on it as my standard weather-sealed general purpose lens on full frame bodies. It accomplishes the dual purpose of a gorgeous smooth rendering rich color portrait lens (wide open to 2.0) and brilliantly crisp daytime landscape / walk around snapper (f4-8).
Add in the fact that it's weather sealed, it's become my go-to lens on the 5D2. It's not so big and heavy to be burden, but big enough to give room for a pretty power AF drive.
Keeping this one as long as I have a Canon, this time.

Best low light lens out there. Sharp, robust and
expensive but worth every penny. I'm a film student and I was deciding between the Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 AIS and this one for my 5D Mark II. My pocket suffers but it is a joy to shoot with.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Autofocus Lens:
I bought this lens looking to use it for some filming work and everyday use because of the f/1.2. I wanted something thats great in low-light and this was a perfect choice that suited my needs.
The lens looks and feels VERY durable. There is not much to complain about with such a wide aperture. I've owned two Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II's, but I decided to upgrade because of how easily those cheap things break. I didn't bother getting the f/1.4 because I wanted the best. The Canon EF 50mm f1.2L is easily one of my favourite lenses. I've owned it for a week now and I haven't taken it off since. The f/1.2 is REALLY impressive in the dark.
Only thing that there really is to complain about is the weight. It's pretty darn heavy, but that doesn't bother me.

I mostly use this lens for portrait photos and this is the lens on my T3i most of the time. I have 24-70L, 17-40L, and 50L. All are great lenses but I do have to say 50L is my favorite one.

I love this lens! I own the 24-70, 70-200 2.8 IS II, 35 1.4, 135 2, and 100L, and this is by far my favorite lens. I use it with the 5d II and love the results. Colors and contrast are amazing and the bokeh is silky smooth. It the smallest of the L primes and feels great in my hand. It focuses very well (although not the fastest of my lenses) and can see in the dark (works even better with the 7d). Some people are critical of this lens for its sharpness. While it is not the sharpest lens in the world, it is the best 50mm available and it very usable wide open. I had the 50 1.4 before, and while that was a great lens for the price, the 50 1.2 is the far better lens. Buy this lens and love it for a lifetime... If I could only have one lens this would be it!

I'm an experienced amateur who's interested in portrait, landscape, and wildlife photography. i had read a lot before i made my mind and buy this prime lens...and I didn't regret it; fast, sharp, relatively light, and the pro design of the lens is a plus too. the very wide open lens enables an amazingly short depth of field and if you're a portrait photographer, with few shimmering light behind your subject, you will get beautiful bokeh. its a must for portrait photographers as well as those who are interested in shooting abstract with very blurry backgrounds. the only drawdown is that its a bit difficult to be mounted when the hood is fixed.

Do not listen to other people! Try things for yourself! The lens is awesome simply. The colors, contrast, construction, detail are just beautiful. It isn't perfect. It could be as sharp as the 85L wide open but it makes up in other areas. I love it and I know I will keep it and use it for a long long time.
