The Digital Photography Book - Scott Kelby, the man who changed the "digital darkroom" forever with his groundbreaking, #1 bestselling, award-winning book The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers, now tackles the most important side of digital photography - how to take pro-quality shots using the same tricks today's top digital pros use (and it's easier than you'd think).
This entire book is written with a brilliant premise, and here's how Scott describes it: "If you and I were out on a shoot, and you asked me, 'Hey, how do I get this flower to be in focus, but I want the background out of focus?' I wouldn't stand there and give you a lecture about aperture, exposure, and depth of field.
In real life, I'd just say, 'Get out your telephoto lens, set your f/stop to f/2.8, focus on the flower, and fire away.' You d say, 'OK,' and you'd get the shot. That's what this book is all about. A book of you and I shooting, and I answer the questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I've learned just like I would with a friend, without all the technical explanations and without all the techno-photo-speak."
This isn't a book of theory - it isn't full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts: this is a book of which button to push, which setting to use, when to use them, and nearly two hundred of the most closely guarded photographic "tricks of the trade" to get you shooting dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos with your digital camera every time you press the shutter button.
Here's another thing that makes this book different: each page covers just one trick, just one single concept that makes your photography better. Every time you turn the page, you'll learn another pro setting, another pro tool, another pro trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints.
There's never been a book like it, and if you're tired of taking shots that look "OK," and if you're tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, "Why don't my shots look like that?" then this is the book for you.

I have always loved playing around with camera's and photography but have never taken any formal classes, sort of a backyard photographer-self taught. I decided to get this book (for some more self teaching) and I couldn't put it down from start to finish. I find Scott Kelby's style of writing to be a very easy read and easy to understand. All of the tips on how to do this or that, and what settings to use to aquire different effects, are all indispensible for someone trying to improve their passion in photography. Some of the things I already knew but I picked up a lot more that I didn't know. Every time a read a new trick, I can't wait to grab the camera and go out to try the technique for myself. I have no complaints about this book at all. In fact, I have recently bought his Volume 2 of this series and look forward to reading it when it arrives.

Comments about Pearson Education Book: The Digital Photography Book:
Once you get beyond the goofy humor there is quite a bit of helpful information. The situation driven advice is terrific, (landscapes, weddings, flower close ups, professional look hints etc.) This book is a good companion to your camera's instruction book.

Comments about Pearson Education Book: The Digital Photography Book:
This is the book for you if you just want to get out there and start shooting. You will feel like Kelby is right next to you, holding your hand as a guide. As a novice, I found his "voice" to be very approachable, easy to understand and funny. The book is small enough to carry around easily and contains many photographs that illustrate his points.

Comments about Pearson Education Book: The Digital Photography Book:
I've taken courses before, but quite a few years ago. this book has a simplified approach - the author tells you what to do in a given situation. Get another book if you want long, lingering discussion on details. Get this one if you need a refresher.
Pros: Short, straightforward and concise.
Cons: I should have read this years ago.
Comments about Pearson Education Book: The Digital Photography Book:
This book may be a little 'higher-level' for me. I had to find another source (google and youtube) to learn what exactly aperture was, for example. But the most amazing thing about the book, aside from its really helpful information, lots of great simple tips from a tried-and-true perspective, etc... is that it is really well written! I actually enjoy reading it-- the author uses humor and good writing style to draw you in and make it easy to keep reading... and his tips are said in plain, every day language, explaining how and why to do things he suggests, with nice pictures to supplement the text.

it touches on many different topics but doesnt get in depth about anything at all.. Ive read 1 2 and 3 and ive picked up a few tips but this isnt by any means a complete book on digital photography. A more suitable title would have been "random digital photography tips, in no specific order" i would recommend this book to someone who doesnt own a dslr camera yet..

In my recent trip overseas I took a camera that I was unfamiliar with, and which I had no idea how to get the best use from. I purchased Scott Kelby's book 'The Digital Photography Book' to read on my flight, and I am so pleased that I did. The book is definitely written to encourage the amatuer photographer to get the best pics possible with their camera. Easy to read and apply. I made some easy adjustments to the way I take pictures and was immensely pleased with the results. I definitely recommend Scott's book!
