Comments about Bescor CK-54XLRATM Light and Battery Kit:
I called Bescor to get their recommendation on the best light for my video camera and for how I intend to use it, and this was one of the top two they recommended. I have a compact Sony Handycam DCR-DVD201, so a compact light was a must... and this is.
Currently I'm using a 35w bulb and the output is great (Bescor said I could also go with a 50w bulb without any problems). Based on the sample footage I've shot so far, I would estimate that the light is more than adequate for about 6 to 10 feet (this is based on tests done in my home, in the evening, with normal house lighting).
The barndoors are very solid and move smoothly, yet hold their position firmly.
The head of the light rotates 180 degrees (90 up, 90 down), which is nice because it allows me to rotate it up or down based on how close I am to my subject matter. Much like the barndoors, the rotation of the light head is smooth and holds it's position firmly.
The power switch is conveniently located on the back of the light head.
The battery pack is much smaller than I imagined (even with the posted dimmensions I thought it would be larger), and it has a nice holding case with a good belt clip on it.
I can't say enough good things about this light. I shoot a lot of indoor video of my family, and this light has improved the video quality immensely. I have so much less video noise/artifacts, and the color quality I am now getting is awesome.
The only thing I would have like to seen on this light is the ability to rotate it side-to-side. That would allow me to position it just a little better, as the video camera bracket I mount it to positions the light slightly off-center.
This is a great compact light.
