As the device is Firewire no driver is needed, but it doesn't come that easy.
Adobe Premiere Elements hangs if you put it on analog mode before the device is initialized in the program in digital mode. I had to find this out myself as this was not mentioned in the manual, nor did the telephone support tell me.
I bought this device to capture analog VHS and Beta (Betamax) tapes in order to edit them rather than directly burn them to DVD (as for the last option there are much cheaper devices), but the Pyro drops frames a lot on these tapes as it sometimes cannot cope with a the signal with a little disturbance in it. Even with a professional video amplifier it doesn't work.
Technical support suggested me to capture a DVD with it in order to see if it drops frames and the device may be broken. Well, on DVD footage it doesn't drop frames, but who wants to capture DVD through an analog device?
So actually this device is worth nothing as I cannot capture a VHS or Beta tape without getting dropped frames. Pyro technical support says I just have to live with it.
Ultimatly this device is not what I was hoping for.

Comments about ADS Technologies PYRO A/V Link with Adobe Premiere Elements 4 for Windows:
This card worked inconsistently for about 4 months and then stopped. Returned to manufacturer they sent back a unit that was even worse. The power light did not even come on. They sent back the RMA equipment in the same old box, they only replaced the unit not the cables that came with it.Very shabby! I would give them 0 stars if i could.

Comments about ADS Technologies PYRO A/V Link with Adobe Premiere Elements 4 for Windows:
I bought this because it is the ONLY way to capture component video whose source is 240p (my Intensity card refuses to see 240p video) since I need to record old videogames. The Sony DVMC-DA1 (or 2) can capture 240p video but unfortunately doesn't have component, so I needed this PYRO thing. Everyone knows that even s-video is unacceptable and only component will do.
First of all, it claims to work with Final Cut Pro. It does not. Strike 1. However Quicktime will see and capture from it in its native codec. But here's the thing: the resulting image capture is much darker than the source no matter how the IRE setting is adjusted. Strike 2. And the compression is off the charts. I never knew the DV codec could look so bad. Compression artifacts are everywhere. Is this thing first encoding into MPEG-1, then to Cinepak, then to Real Video and finally outputting in DV? Strike 3. You're out, but still somehow you refuse to leave the plate. OK. While capturing, the audio randomly becomes out of sync (even on locked mode), it starts squealing and sounding very metallic and the picture starts falling apart... different parts of the picture begin to move at different times. This will keep happening for about 10 seconds and then it will magically fix itself, only to do it again a minute later. Strike 4.
This product was clearly designed and manufactured at a high school workshop. Actually, that might be giving it too much credit.

We use the product to livestream our church services. We have 3 cameras and we use a switcher and then from a output from the switcher to the ads box and then we connect it firewire to the computer and thats how we livestream. Wonderful picture! No problems at all.[...]

This product is a God-send when it comes to converting analog video/audio to firewire on a budget. Have used this box for two separate church internet video setups... works like a charm!

The device works fine on my older desktop computer but will not install on my newer laptop. Some driver problem I think. They both use Windows XP. I sent a technical support request to ADS. They never responded. However, the Elements 4 software works fine on my newer dual core laptop but not on my older 3.0GHz Pentium - way too slow.

This is a great little box to have when you need a down and dirty transfer from a tape or optical source in to your NLE or media player. I've used it to transfer VHS footage and DVD footage into various editing software for projects and still image creation.
Also doubles as a down and dirty client monitor output box when I send the signal from my computer back out to the box and to an external monitor.
Great little work horse.
