I picked this lens up for my Sony A100 to replace my slow kit lens. The 2.8 f-stop gives me a great creamy background and keeps my point of focus tack sharp. I've used Sigma lenses before and they're pretty good for the money. This lens would be perfect if it wasn't for the weight...This lens is ALMOST a pound (see specs). And it feels like it! It is a bit heavy and causes your hand and arm to get a little tired if you're carrying it around all day. Also when switched to manual focus, it sounds like the focusing motor in the camera is still engaged, although it does turn quite easily. Other than those two points, this lens is the perfect lens to replace a kit, portraits, stills, or anything you would need a wide opening with wide to normal focal lengths.

I should give it one star, but I'll put it down to my bad luck with SIGMA lenses. This lens was so useful and sharp. But, less than six months into owning it the focus gears are stripped. This is the third SIGMA lens that has exhibited this problem on my SONY a700. That said when it was working it was a joy to use. Hope you have better luck than me.

Comments about Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro Autofocus Lens for Sony Alpha & Minolta Digital SLR Cameras:

I am new to digital photography and wanted good quality, bright lenses without breaking the bank. I I bought this lens for a bargain price of [$]!Not bad for a lens that carries a 4 year warranty and has a constant aperture of F2.8 throughout its focal range! See just how much more you have to pay for equivalent lens made by Canon, Nikon and the like! The only feature I wish it had was the HSM (Hypersonic Motor) that my Sigma 50-150mm F2.8 EX HSM II has! It would make it auto focus even faster and, in near silence...important if you will be using the lens to shoot video with your DSLR (so as to cut down on background noise in your videos).

I bought an Sony AF adapter(which allow me to change the aperture manually) to use with my Panasonic GH1, its an Awesome lens for the range & Price! The GH1 has a 2x crop factor so its actually a 36-100mm, which is great for wedding and portrait shots! Fast manual focus, light weight compare to the Nikon 18-35mm f2.8([$]). Not as sharp as the Nikon(for stills)but for shooting video who cares, you can't tell the difference.

I purchased this lense for close up portraits and event photography.
But the first time I used it was for street photography in NYC. I used in low light HDR pics in the subway. WOW! I used with my Sony A700 and bracketed 5 exposures. Then went home into my studio and used Photomatix Pro4. WINNER!
        This lens is FANTASIC.
After showing some of the prints to some of my fellow photographers they want the lens also.
It's faster than I thought it would be. Just a great choice.

Comments about Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro Autofocus Lens for Sony Alpha & Minolta Digital SLR Cameras:

Excellent - fast, perfect zoom range, and quality of image with this zoom lens speaks volumes. Reasonably priced. 18mm-50mm range is a perfect "Default" lens for quick shooting. A super alternative to more pricey Zuiko lenses.
Strengths: Good auto focus and manual focus relationships to the Evolt camera. 2.8 provides a speedy lens that is less prone to noise or slow shutter speed issues in low light situations. Built like a rock! Sturdy and dependable. A tribute to Sigma's keeping up with the 4/3 format camera needs.
Weaknesses: Some potential for vignetting with 18mm setting and lens hood. Careful composition can prevent this.

Comments about Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro Autofocus Lens for Sony Alpha & Minolta Digital SLR Cameras:

This is now my walking around lens. Coupled with a Sigma 50-150 2.8 and a 2x teleconverter I have a compact kit to meet all my needs. I just returned from a trip to San Francisco and was very satisfied with the performance of the lens. It worked well for street shots in Chinatown as well as wide angles at the Golden Gate bridge. Bright sunlight and low light situations were a breeze. Also shot some low light photos in driving snow when I got back home. The lens is solid and fast focusing in auto mode and easy to lock on focus in manual. The only negative comment I have is the lens hood fits loosely enough that it got slightly turned on a number of occasions until it was visible in the corner of the shots. Just need to keep that in mind.

very "friendly" lens, works very well with my Sony A300, sharp, nice bokeh, fast focus, easy to mount, matt finish is also a nice touch, the only one think I dont like so far is the front cap, hard to clip on when hood is attached.

I bought this lens as an upgrade from my kit lens, and I havn't been disappointed by it. It is a lot faster lens than I had been using. Great for low light and natural light shooting. It is a bit heavy for the focal length, but the improvement in quality and sharpness is well worth the effort. And the macro capability is icing on the cake. love it! on my sony A350 it is a great length for portraits.

It looks very solid, like old one which I had before from Sigma EX series, but after taking just few test photos, AF stoped working and left only manual (but dodgy) mode ... not sure if this is only this one or all of them but not so nice when you have brande new lens, which you should trust and it .... Photos looks very sharp, a bit too slow for auto focus (before it broken) ... nice solid feel, I will see after guaranty repair.

              Sigma 18-50 ex dc macro

              By Sam

              from Massachusetts

Comments about Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro Autofocus Lens for Sony Alpha & Minolta Digital SLR Cameras:

This lens is a fantastic alternative to a kit lens, at a reasonable price. It takes great macro photos, with great bokeh and depth of field.I purchased this as my first lens for my A100, and it is serving me well. Currently it is the only lens I have for the camera, though I plan to buy a super wide as well as a longer tell. The 18-50 is a really good lens to start with, if you can't afford a whole kit of lenses right off the bat.The construction of the lens is solid and it has a matte finish that seems to stay scratch free. The lens also comes with a padded case and a good quality tulip lens hood.

              Expertise: Amature Photographer

Problems Encountered: The only two things that could be better:the zoom rotates the opposite of most lenses, though it is easy to get used to.the filter ring size is 72mm which is fairly large, and means that filters are a bit more expensive than a more common and smaller 55 or 58mm ring size.

Items I Recommend: Sony A100, A uv filter to protect its front element
