I choose this lens as a standard zoom for my 40D because it covers all focal lengths I use for indoor shooting (from group photos and interiors to close-up portraits) while providing fastest aperture available for DSLR zooms, which is absolutely a must have for shallower depth-of-field portraits ans for low-light photography. I was considering another similar lenses: Tamron 18-50/2.8 and Canon 17-55/2.8 IS USM, but the Tamron usually collects a bit lower ratings on Web than the Sigma and was not available in shops at the moment; the Canon got IS, USM, great reviews and superb sample images but it looks a bit overpriced (2.5 times higher than the third-party lenses - if I wanted to spend that much I'd rather upgrade to a full frame camera and L lenses); its main advantage is IMO Image Stabilization, but when I'm photographing people and get blurred images it's usually because of their movement, not because of camera shake. As for non-USM focusing, the lens is quite fast and not too loud (although focusing sound is clearly audible). So I decided to go for Sigma and so far I'm absolutely not disappointed. I prefer to never use flash and I shoot a lot of portratis so I almost always use the lens at f/2.8 and it works good enough on that aperture, giving pixel-per-pixel sharpness and with very minor CA at corners at widest angle. IQ advantage over Canon EF-S 18-55 is overwhelming, especially at shorter focal lengths, even at f/2.8 vs. any aperture of 18-55: better sharpness, contrast, way lower distortion, and etc. Can't directly compare IQ to another zoom lenses of this range as I'm mostly into prime lenses and only used a few other zooms of different focal range, but I'm sure it won't lose to any other zoom of this price range. Another advantage of the lens is 1:3 macro capability, which is more than enough for pets, flowers and so on.

I went through two copies of this lens. The first copy had a front-focus problem approaching 20mm. I sent sample shots to Sigma, and they directed me to simply return the lens rather than have it serviced. So, I exchanged it, and the second copy front-focused by approximately 8mm. That's not nearly as bad, of course, but for close-up photography, it meant few keepers. (I bought this lens for the macro capabilities, as I intended to use it in restaurants, taking pictures of my plate without moving away from the table.) The focus problem was in both my Canon XTi and my Canon 40D. None of my Canon lenses have any focus problems whatsoever; this issue was limited to the Sigma lens.I sent the lens to Sigma for service, and three weeks later, received my lens back in even worse condition than it started. It still front-focuses by 8mm, and now, even what is in focus is much softer than before. I contacted Sigma repeatedly to ask them what I should do, and they ignored my repeated emails.I have seen many good shots from this lens from people who had good copies. When I shot at f/5.6 or above, I would catch my intended focus point (since the depth of field was increased), but that made shots in lower-light too blurry due to the slower shutter speeds. This lens can be very good -- if you get a good copy from the start. If you read comments on the photography forums, you'll see story after story of quality control problems from Sigma, and the need for repeated service attempts before a lens will be correctly calibrated. (Several people even report having to send the lens WITH their camera body so the lens could be matched -- even though their camera was correctly calibrated to Canon spec -- being without their camera entirely for several weeks.) If you luck out with a good copy (which is not as likely as it should be), you'll enjoy the lens. If you don't, return it immediately rather than dealing with Sigma service. The price is low, but the risk is high.
Expertise: Advanced Amateur
Problems Encountered: Front-focus problems on multiple copies, bad Sigma service.
Previous Equivalent Item Owned: Canon 24-70mm f/2.8, Canon 24-105 f/4
Items I Recommend: Canon 24-105 f/4 with 500D Close-Up Lens is a good (but more expensive) alternative

Comments about Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital EOS:
Great all-around lens.:
I have used it for a wide variety of shooting situations:
- landscape of a sunrise
- Indoor family pictures. (Able to get great
pictures in low-light due to large aperture
across full focal range)
- Surprisingly good macro capability.
- Also incredibly fast outdoors in daylight
(again due to latge aperture across focal range)

I also have a 50 -150 F/2.8 Sigma and this one makes a nice pair all the way from 18 mm to 150 mm, F2.8, to shoot video with 7D.
The footages from both lenses look as if shot by one lens at different focus length.
So, I mostly use these 2 lenses and nothing else, except for special occasions, such as very wide or very long.

Comments about Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital EOS:
I haven't had a chance to use the lens a lot yet. I bought it to replace one of my two copies of the Canon EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS. I wanted a constant 2.8 but didn't want to pay $1800 Canadian for the Canon 16-35 f/2.8L II.
I am impressed with the build quality and the performance of the 2.8 aperture. It is a little soft in the corners at 2.8, but realistically it won't be used that much at 2.8 except for situations where a little softness isn't a big issue. Once you are at f/4 it is very sharp. The colours are much nicer that the Canon 18-55 IS. I love the tight depth of field and the nice background blur (bokeh). Macro 1:3 is a nice bonus.
I kept one copy of my 18-55 IS because I find this lens tough to use with a flash and that isn't any fault of the lens. I am still learning to shoot in Manual mode with a flash and I still like to user Program mode to ensure I get a good shot when needed. Once I am in Program mode on my Rebel XT or Rebel T1i the camera always opens the lens wide open which doesn't give me the best results. I tend to use the 18-55 for situations like this. I am sure I would experience the same problem with the Canon 16-35 f/2.8.
This lens has completed my kit. This lens along with my Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 DC EX, Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, Canon EF 50mm 1.8, and Canon 70-200mm f/4L has given me the ability to have good coverage of focal lengths with high image quality at a reasonable price.
Great lens – highly recommended.

Basing value on cost, it's a great lens. Realistically, you get what you pay for, and, well, this just isn't L-lens quality, nor should you expect it to be.

Comments about Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital EOS:
I read the customer reviews on this lens before making my purchase, hoping that I would be able to sing its praises too. Unfortunately however, the lens I received was a complete disappointment. In particular, the lens was very dark. Even in bright evening (outdoor) light, images were dark regardless of the setting (Auto, AV, TV, Manual). But the real deal killer was the grainy images. After my outdoor walk-around shoot to test the lens, I came inside and set up my tripod and took a series of images using the Sigma and a series using the same settings with my Canon 30D kit lens. Again, I was very disappointed with the Sigma lens. While I din't expect image quality of a $$$ lens, I did expect clear and sharp useable images which this lens did not provide. I am going to save my money for a Canon lens.

I bought this lens as a low-cost, light-weight alternative for my Canon 24-105 mm zoom in conjunction with my Rebel XSi. I have taken some 300 shots with it. Results have been very good: sharp photos, vivid colors (particularly reds and oranges). The f/2.8 aperture is also good to isolate foreground subjects in portraits. I am pretty much satisfied.

Comments about Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital EOS:
This lens shines as a portrait lens when used in the long half of its range. In good light the AF is very good, in dim light it struggles a bit. Its weak point is when shooting strongly backlit subjects at the wide end- it produces excessive purple fringing. This makes it less suitable for landscapes. Actually I have gotten better results at 18mm with the Canon 18-55 IS kit lens when stopped down to f8 or 11. For studio use, however it has been great and the wide aperture is a plus.

I was a little nervous about spending all this money and not be happy with the quality. After all, I didn't want to sacrifice the detail in a photo by not spending more on a reliable canon lens.
After downloading the photos, I honestly cannot tell the difference between my photos with the Sigma lens and the same photos using by buddy's high end Canon lenses.
I'm quite pleased. And I'm excited to play around with the macro capabilities of this lens. It's fun getting a little artistic with the Christmas ornaments and gifts--composing them with different depths of field.
Having the 2.8 aperture is great for indoor sports. I also like that I can finally have a nice depth of field in my background.

Solid construction compared to equivalent Canon EF-S and Tamron. 1:3 close-up can focus close (pseudo-macro?). Warm color compared to Canon and Tokina. Compact. Less expensive than Tamron and Canon. Constant aperture great for video.
No IS/VC. No HSM for Canon mount, loud if you AF during video. The Lens hood when reversed means holding the focus ring awkwardly in MF. Sigma has a reputation of QC issues but moire-AF testing on my copy seemed okay.

I purchased this lens to replace the 28-135mm IS kit lens that came with my 50D. This is a WAY better lens. Image quality is spectacular!
My only problem with this lens is the AF has horrible front focus throughout the entire range. I had to max out the AF Microadjust on the 50D to get it reasonably close. It will be sent in to Sigma for calibration in the next couple of weeks. I also don't understand why they didn't put HSM on the canon version of this lens like they did the Nikon.
If they put image stabilization and HSM on this lens it would be perfect!
