The Canon HD Video Lens 6x XL 3.4-20.4mm L was engineered for high definition ENG, commercial, documentary and feature videographers who demand uncompromising optical quality. This wide-angle zoom lens provides users with an extensive range of focal lengths from 24.5 to 147mm (in 35mm photographic terms). Designed exclusively for Canon's XL lens mount system, it adds even more versatility and artistic range to Canon's XL H1 HD camcorder.
Canon's "L-Series" designation indicates that this lens meets their highest quality standards with excellent color reproduction and edge to edge sharpness. High-refraction index optical glass that incorporates Canon's newly developed UA (ultra high refractive index aspherical) lens design yields extremely high resolution and increased zoom magnification in a compact and lightweight package. Canon's multi-coating further enhances this lens's imaging quality by reducing or eliminating ghosting and flare for a clear, crisp image. Here you have another fine example of how Canon lenses are providing professional videographers with the tools they need.

Comments about 3.4-20mm 6x XL Wide Angle Zoom HD Lens for the Canon XL H1:
One of my main projects has been shooting a local high school marching band, with some thoughts to turning this into a documentary on marching band subculture.
Especially in smaller stadiums, the stock XL H1 lens could not take in the entire width of the field, and this is a 110-member band whose formations often take up nearly the full breadth of a standard football field.
For some formations I never managed to get a full establishing shot during the last season, unless we were performing somewhere where I could get far away from and high above the field.
While I might have been able to do this with a very wide EF still lens and the EF Adapter XL, the cost of such a lens would have been similar, and probably not comparable in effective quality to this lens.
I've only started using the lens, but so far it's everything I'd hoped for and more, giving a much needed option for rich, wide shots as well as macro capability for luscious close-ups and inserts, where the desired look demands an actual, physical close-up, rather than the compromise of a tightly-zoomed shot from the stock lens, or one of the lenses in my still lens collection, which, with the conversion factor, all end up giving the appearance of a fairly long lens, even with something as wide as a 24mm prime lens.
I have yet to discover the negatives. I wouldn't consider weight to be one of them. If I were worried about weight I'd be using a consumer camera. And for some situations a consumer camera might be just what's needed. But that should be outside the scope of a discussion of this lens, I would think.
My only minor gripe is that the site did not specify the filter mount size, and I did not go to the trouble to research it before purchase, so I did not order my usual UV filter as lens protector that I tend to buy each time I add a lens to the collection. I believe it's an 82mm mount, but you should confirm that for yourself if you're buying this lens.
B&H could have had a no-brainer add-on sale (granted not a big one) by listing a compatible protective UV filter among the suggested accessories. But that certainly was no deal-breaker.

Comments about 3.4-20mm 6x XL Wide Angle Zoom HD Lens for the Canon XL H1:
This lens was purchased for a specific reason: as a documentarian I had to make a series of shots in very small spaces. I am shooting HD and I didn't want to use an adaptor. I wanted a top-quality integreated lens that was designed for my XL H1. This is it! The pictures are lovely, the control of the lens is the same (and with the same features) as the standard lens, and it shows sooooo much more. This is exactly what I was hoping for and Canon has delivered again. Sure, the lens is heavy...it's a lot of glass. And it's a lot of glass for the money.
