Anybody who works with images on computers knows that each monitor display is different, and adjusting one manually is a tedious exercise, especially if your goal is to get your prints to look like what you have on your screen. I've used Adobe Gamma for years, and while it does give passable results, it just doesn't get the job done.I can never get my shadows right without a lot of messing around with the images. They either look way too dark, so that I can't see any detail in them, or too light so that they don't look enough like shadows. In addition, any grey tones always have a tiny cast of cool colour to them. No matter what I do to the monitor, I can never get truly neutral greys. This is a common complaint among digital artists.I finally decided it was time to remove all doubt. I just want the colour on my desktop monitors to be perfect. And my laptop...well that calibration isn't even close. Doing it by hand just isn't working and Adobe Gamma on LCD screens is useless. While researching colour calibrators, I kept coming across reviews where people said that after viewing the results, they wished they'd done it sooner, which made me wonder what I was missing. After reading many reviews, I settled on the Eye-One Display 2 colour calibrator by X-Rite. At[$], it costs more than a number of others, but it consistently gets the best reviews. It arrived by UPS a couple of days ago. and within a half hour, I had both my CRT desktop monitor and my laptop calibrated. The procedure was easy, the results amazing. There was a noticeable difference in the CRT, exactly where I wanted to see it...in the grey tones and the shadows. The colour was improved as well. The laptop was like night and day. I had previously avoided doing any detailed colour work on it, because I'd have to fix it on my desktop computer anyway. Now I know why. What a huge improvement. The only downside is that it won't calibrate 2 monitors on a dual output video card. Since I have a dual monitor system, one of my monitors had to stay as is, but it's a tool palette and reference image monitor, so who cares?Since many of the reviews recommend calibrating your monitor regularly, I'll be getting a lot of use out of the Eye-One. Now that I know what it can do, I'll echo the many reviewers before me by saying...I wish I'd done it sooner.

I have used two Colorvision Spyders since about 2002, theywere OK but not great. Everything I read about the Eye-OneDisplay 2 lead me to believe that it was considerablybetter. Sorry to say that is not the case. More expensive, instructions are poorly written, but the bottom line is thecolor and contrast are not as good as my old Spyder.
Expertise: Master Photographer, 27 years
Problems Encountered: Instructions are poor and confusing. color profile is justnot consistent or accurate. Customer support hotline notmuch of a help.

I started noticing my printed pictures were coming out a tad "pinky". After several other photographers that I follow started recommending this product, I decided to buy it. Thank goodness! It took much longer to set up on my computer. I think my firewall had a little bit to do with it and I also had to go to their website and download another driver....but once that was figured out, it reconfigured my monitor.

I am using this on a 27" Intel Core 2 Duo imac and it works just fine. It does everything that it is supposed to do. Imacs can be tricky to setup for color calibration but I did not have any real problem and now my screen matches my prints.
Even though this product has been discontinued I don't think you can get a better deal on monitor calibration than this. As far as the mac is concerned it is supported though Lion so it will be usable for quite some time.

This product is very useful, although it isn't the new item for color management. It is very easy to have the correct color adjustment for my MBPs' 10.5 & 10.6.

Comments about X-Rite i1Display 2 Colorimeter Monitor Profile Solution:
I purchased this in addition to a new monitor to ensure my prints looked the same as they do on my monitor. It was not entirely idiot proof (I might be a little slower than most) but eventually I figured it out. Product support was slow (3 days to get back to me. I figured out my problem by then.) Despite this I am entirely satisfied with the results in my prints.

Works as it should, but the provided instructions are useless. Definitely find a video or blog post with an easy-to-understand tutorial. Otherwise it works great, and will probably let you know that you need to upgrade to a better monitor, too!

I used this on 2 external monitors and a laptop. One monitor and the laptop look great, but the other monitor still doesn't have nearly enough contrast. I don't think it's a fault of this tool, maybe just a limitation of the monitor (Samsung 22"). As it provided the same calibration every time (tried it 3 times with the same results).

This came highly recommended from my lab, but X-Rite has discontinued these, so try to snag one before they're gone.
Not the greatest instructions, but check with your lab to see if they have recommended settings for your calibration to make sure you're on par with their printers.
As long as your monitor isn't total garbage, it walks you through an initial calibration by hand and it takes care of the rest. Smooth sailing once you get going.
My only gripe is the plastic cover thing for the ambient light measurement is a pain to get off once you put it on.

Used this product on a no name monitor to get a better match between the screen and printer. I was able to calibrate and get 'acceptable' results... now looks like I have to get a better monitor ;-)

The i1 Display 2 does a great job of calibrating your monitor in either the easy mode or the advanced mode, provided you can find some guidance. The easy mode is pretty straight forward and, well, easy. Calibration with the easy mode only takes a few minutes and does make a noticeable difference in your displays appearance. The advanced mode allows you to tweak your display even further provided you know what you are doing. The instructions included with the product are utterly useless for the adv anced mode calibration. I found some different websites with good walk-throughs of the advanced calibration mode. Other than the useless instructions this product does what it claims to do and does it well.

I wanted to be able to use ICC profiles so I needed to calibrate my monitor or so I was told by a printer. It changed my monitor's image very little if at all, so it must have been right on. I have an iMac desktop and was told when I bought it I wouldn't need to calibrate it. I think they were right. It only calibrates the monitor though it shows a printer, and scanner on the initial page. At least I haven't figured how to calibrate my printer. It is simple to use and tells you if it was a successful calibration. You can also view a before and after image to see the difference[...]

I believe this is the best colorimeter for the price! It should cost at least twice as much. For [$] you can't go wrong. It gives fantastic and predictable results. Forget about all Spiders (read reviews and feedbacks - spiders are very inconsistent and they do "lie" a lot). This one gives you very consistent results every time.If you want best results, forget about the software it comes with. I used it with Lacie Blue Eye Pro software (you can download it for free, just google it), together they give far better result!

NO USEFUL INSTRUCTIONS- it took several days of on-line search, and trial & error to figure out how to use it. I sent an email to Xrite only to find out this item, although brand new, was discontinued. (what?!!!) After 20 attempts, it still calibrated my monitor with too much red... a sign of a defective unit according to on-line reports. After a week, I'm still waiting for comments from Xrite about how to get the red out. Not sure I'd recommend this product due to the amount of frustration and lack of response.

I bought this to calibrate my laptop monitor, and was worried I might not be able to figure out how to use it. The unit came with very easy to understand instructions, and with just a few clicks I was calibrated. The only thing I had problems with, was I had to download an update for it to be compatible with Windows 7. It took me quite a while to figure this out, but once the update was installed, it worked great. I haven't had a chance to compare prints yet, but it looks good so far.
