I BOUGHT THIS UNIT SEVERAL MONTHS AGO. THE FIRST UNIT BROKE DOWN IN 7 DAYS. THE 2ND ONE HAS BEEN FINE. I HAVE A SONY PD-170 (THE PRO VERSION OF THE SONY VX-2100) WHICH RECORDS IN DVCAM MODE.
THIS UNIT PLAYS BACK IN DVCAM (BUT DOES NOT RECORD IN DVCAM) THE TAPES I RECORD IN DVCAM TRANSFER TO MY COMPUTER THROUGH THE FIREWIRE FROM WITHIN THE UNIT. I WAS VERY INTERESTED IN SONY'S GV-HD 700 VIDEO WALKMAN VCR AND WOULD HAVE BOUGHT IT BUT IT DOES NOT PLAY DVCAM !! THIS JVC UNIT SAVES THE WEAR AND TEAR OF MY CAMERA. THE MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THIS UNIT. IS THAT ALL OF THE INPUTS & OUTPUTS ARE CONSTRUCTED VERY POORLY. THEY ARE LOOSE THEY MOVE BACK & FORTH EVEN THE FIREWIRE WHEN PLUGING IN. SO I USE A LIGHTER GAGE WIRE.I DID NOT THINK I EVEN NEEDED A HARD DRIVE. BUT IT COMES IN VERY HANDY. I AM A DIRECTOR & EDITOR OF 3 LOCAL & 2 WORLD WIDE PUBLIC ACCESS TV SHOWS.

I use this deck in live television production and i was very disappointed in its performance. The DVD player barely reads any formats. The hard drive feature is the nicest part of the deck. I use it for instant replays. We use the mini DV part for roll in video, which works ok after you figure out how to disable the on screen icons. we also have a few of these decks in our studio and one of them has broken after about 8 months of use. The warranty did cover it though. All in all for recording from or importing to a computer using the hard drive or mini dv ports, the deck works ok, as for dvd's forget it's even there.

Little bit confusion at the beginning reading manual - could be more simple.
First my iMac could not recognize it and took a while to find out from forums that unit has to be reset by pressing "STOP" and PLAY" buttons and holding for 5 seconds. After several attempts it worked. Very useful and easy to operate, essential tool for capturing mini dv tapes.

This unit was just what I was looking for. DV recorder and DVD as well. fit Great in studio. THEN we started having trouble with the DVD recorder and player. Many unfinished burns or showing it was complete and never able to play back disk that were burned from this unit. Now unit locks up when trying to use the DVD side. DV side still works good.

I've ordered 2 of these at work, and I think I've learned my lesson. I bought them for quick DV to DVD dubs, and they do that well. Problem is, they don't stand up to moderately heavy use(5-10 dubs a week). Both units required repairs to the DVD drive after about 6 months. The interface also tends to lock up frequently, requiring a hard-reset. It should be a nice product, but it's too unreliable - which is, more than anything, what it needs to be.

Comments about JVC SR-DVM600 3-in-1 Video Recorder/Player:
I bought a handful of these for an educational setting. The price was nice, and sony DSR11 had been discontinued. The older JVC miniDV/SVHS decks were wonderful, so I had high hopes for these. Unfortunately, this deck does not live up the expectations. If you are dubbing to miniDV to DVD they are great. Pretty easy and does a good job. On the professional and educational level they are terrible. The HD have to be reset constantly. They will randomly stop reading DVDs, or they wont let you set it to DVD or DV it will just default to the HDD. I now have 6 dubbing stations. I don't need that. I need miniDV decks that work.
JVC has been the worst customer service to deal with. No answers to fixes. I can't explain to 500 student and 40 faculty that everytime the DVD player stops working you have to hold power and stop for 20 seconds and then wait a minute while it fixes itself. which the only fix they tell you. I have never actually spoken to anyone at JVC because they tell me to call and I have sat on hold for 20 minutes. I have more important things to do with my work than wait for a company like JVC to start acting professional.
Terrible product.

We are using this deck to replace another DV recorder that stopped working. The DV side works great, and the DVD side is functional. We just wish the disks burned a little quicker. Still have not found a good use for the Hard Drive in it, but we didn't purchase it for the hard drive. We use it to load footage into Final Cut Pro and burn out commercials to DVD for client approval.

I convert a lot of DVs tapes to DVDs. This machine allows me to not only do the conversion but save it to the internal hard drive for later use.

The first thing I had to deal with at my new job was replacing a broken SRDVM600. Being pressed for time, I bought a replacement of the exact same model. About three months passed of perfect performance, and then the glitches started. Recordings would not finish, discs couldn't be finalized, the input ports on the back stopped working, the deck just flashed "setup" endlessly. I am sending it off for the third time now to the service facility in Chicago- hopefully 3rd time is the charm, cause this thing is less than a year old and not cheap

I transfer VHS and mini DVs onto DVD's as part of my business. I use this machine by recording everything onto the HDD first then dubbing to DVD. It does a nice job and is easy to edit out the bad video before the final dubbing. The menu for adding titles is hard to use. The text breaks onto the next line without warning and there is no way that I've seen to preview it before burning the DVD. The mini DV to DVD dubbing doesn't auto finalize, even though I've set it to, but I can still do it manually. I think it does a good job for the price. I would recommend it for the person who likes technology and doesn't mind figuring out how to work it.
When I read the other reviews for this product I can't believe it's the same machine. I've owned it for about 6 months now and it has not broken down yet.

Comments about JVC SR-DVM600 3-in-1 Video Recorder/Player:
I used to be a fan of JVC, and had purchased various types of equipment from the company. I had owned a consumer version of the MiniDV/SVHS dubbing deck, and was quite pleased with it, but eventually the drive began eating tapes, so I decided to upgrade to the "professional" deck, and purchased the DVM 600. I used the machine less than 20 hours before it began having problems: the high speed dubbing function worked sporadically, and eventually the DVD drive just died. I sent it to JVC for service, and informed them of the problems with the HDD, and they purportedly performed a "Product Updgrade." Afterwards, the Mini DV deck malfunctioned, sometimes allowing me to capture through the firewire port, sometimes invisible to my computer. At one point the machine took over 10 hours to get through the "hello" startup menu. At present, none of my DV editing programs can even recognize the deck, and I've tried it on several computers. The machine is less than 1 and 1/2 years old, and for all intents and purposes is basically useless. I strongly recommend against buying this machine: the mechanical quality is poor and the support even worse. If you're planning on using this for capturing video, don't waste your money: just use your camcorder instead of spending almost $900 for a machine that may or may not work correctly. I'll never purchase another JVC product again.

It is a compact size considering the three component built in one.
The DVD is easy to operate. It responds well to any job you command it to do.
The DVD plays well and it is compatible to most consumer DVD movies you bought from the store and it does record any blank DVDs, but it doesn't respond to the pause command in either in play mode or record mode. I am not sure if only this unit does that or most of the decks have this problem. Anyway, I think it is worth for the price considering there three components in the unit.

Recording from mini-DV to DVD is simple and quick. I do a lot of transfers - I can just set it and leave it. It ends automatically. It gives you a varitey of menu options for the finalized DVD. I would definitely buy it again. Kept waiting for the price to come down and then finally just bit the bullet and bought it. I'm glad I did, it's worth the money.

If you are just using it to make dubs from DV to DVD or DVD to DV, then it's not too bad.
I purchased 6 of these for an editing lab, and they have been nothing problems. Their primary function was supposed to be for capturing in FCP, output from FCP and dubbing for students. I had to pull them out, and put in older decks in their place. Terrible communication with FCP. If the input and output are pressed too often, it seems to get confused and you have to "reset" it. I thought this would save money, and planned on buying more in the future. I put some in classrooms, and they freeze in DV or HDD mode until you have to "reset" again. I don't recommend these to anyone.
