Comments about D-Link 5-Port 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Desktop Switch:
I am an IT tech, formerly with a large corporation, and have purchased dozens of switches of various makes, models, and prices. This D-Link switch is the one we were happiest with. We used them when visitors wanted to share a network connection. When someone needed a second or third PC hooked up in their cubicle, I used a KVM switch for keyboard/mouse/monitor sharing, and the D-Link switch for network connection sharing. These switches work so well, even technically-challenged end-users can have one installed and not ever need to know what it is, or what it does. All they want is for each of their computers to have access to the internet (or the company intranet), and these switches do that job "invisibly," without requiring any user intervention, whatsoever.
Thus, this is the only switch I would buy for personal use, or would recommend to anyone else. I have both a desktop PC and a laptop at home, and needed them both connected to the internet at the same time. Our DSL box has only one port, like a lot of internet connections in a lot of peoples' homes. Once I bought the D-Link switch, all I did was plug in power to the switch, connect an ethernet cable from the switch to the DSL box, and connect one each from the computers to the switch. It works perfectly.
The price is unbeatable, too. I've used switches that cost 5-7 times more, and have noticed that the expensive devices have a pretty high failure rate. In four years of using D-Link desktop switches, I have never known one to fail.
This switch is fast enough to provide a gigabit connection speed. That's much faster than the average home user needs. The slow point would be the internet connection itself, and not this switch. For corporate use, this switch works perfectly in a gigabit network. Some of our older computers had 100 meg NICs, so that's all the speed they got. But the newer ones with gigabit network interface cards got the benefit of the 10X increase in connection speed. The purchase of these switches was easily justifiable.
For non-wireless home use, with four or fewer computers, this switch is simply the best. And with the money you save, you can toss some Cat 6 ethernet cables into your cart, as well.

I use it to connect several networked component in my entertainment center and it works great. Plug everything in and that's it -- couldn't be simpler. The lights on the front also let you know what speed everything is connected at (10/100/1000), which is nice, so I got that going for me.

I use it to build Gigabit ethernet network for NAS/audio/video streaming/backups. For less than [$] you get not only 1GB network but also QoS and Jumbo frames. Without buying gigabit router you can just cascade this one to existing 10/100 wireless router. It seemed a good idea for me and so far no problems. Besides the box is 'green' and powers off ports not used.

Just plugged it in and all works great right out of the box. No setup required.... Not aware that there is anything to setup.Have been using the switch for about 2 weeks now, no issues. It was the lowest cost 1 GBit 5 port switch I could find ([$]).The unit is physically larger then a 100MB switch it replaced.

Comments about D-Link 5-Port 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Desktop Switch:
My home network has grown over the years & this product made it simple to get much higher data xfer speeds for pcs & peripherals by connecting them to gigabit ethernet via cat5 cables. Where one of my desktops was previously connected to my gigabit wireless router by ethernet cable, I now also have a printer & a network attached disk connected, with one free port left.

Use this at home to connect personal and work computers to Internet and shared backup drive. The price was right and it was literally plug and play.
Can't comment on the power saving feature because all 5 ports are active all the time.
With more computers supporting Gig E its nice to have a switch that is also Gig E but I don't think it actually makes any performance difference for home computers.
