This little camera is a miracle.
I own at D200 and a D80-- I am no stranger to good professional and prosumer cameras. The D40 easily blows the D80 out of the water and, while less flexible obviously, it is in many ways more versatile and certainly more fun than even the D200!
This camera's sensitivity in low light is astonishing. What most people don't understand is-- six megapixels on the same size sensor are larger and more spaced apart, and therefore more light sensitive than TEN megapixels in the same space. And while we're on the subject, please please PLEASE do NOT buy the D60 (and CERTAINLY not the D80) just for more megapixels! It's not worth it! Nikon would like you to THINK that it's worth it, but it's not. As for the D60's image sensor cleaner, that's another gimmick: just change your glass carefully with the D40 and occasionally get it cleaned by a professional.
The kit lens is a toy. It's good, but it's a toy. You want to REALLY have fun, do what I did and mate a 18-200VR to the D40. I didn't buy it for that purpose-- I had one-- and I know it sounds weird. But it works absolutely flawlessly. What an amazing combination!!! And the VR ups the camera's low light sensitivity even further.
I can't say enough good things about this camera. Color reproduction, ease of use, quality of build, lightweight... What the D40 does so well is, while it is a powerful tool and worthy of the Nikon name, it's also incredibly FUN. You absolutely cannot go wrong.

The Nikon D40 is a great start to digital SLR photography. The camera makes for a great transition from point and shoot cameras to more creative control over your final photo. Nikon has always represented QUALITY to me, and until now, have never been disappointed with purchasing Nikon. I took the camera to Russia in the summer and tooks tons of photos that really pushed the camera to the max. I found that a lot of my shots needed lots of touching up in Photoshop to really improve the exposure... lots of washed out skys, hidden details in backgrounds, etc. This is more likely caused by the idiot behind the camera than anything inside the camera. But what really surprised me was that just shy of my one year anniversary with the D40, it simply refused to take photos. I sent the camera to Nikon and lived through six weeks of their cryptic service department online comments about the camera's status. After four weeks, they sent the camera back, but not the lens. Three weeks later, the lens came back, with no explanation. Totally bizarre and not at all what I would have expected from a reputable company. I'm glad I purchased an extended warrenty from [...], but wish, now, that I had one for the lens![...]

I received my d40 today and was a little scared bc the box had been smashed on top but B and H did such a good job packaging the camera, so no damage was done. My camera is like brand-new. The shutter count was 157. It takes great pics. I am always happy with my orders from here. Plus, it was 60.00 cheaper than other places
. I am very happy. I would hestitate buying refurbished.

My wife is yearbook sponsor at a small private high school. The refurbished D40 kit was was the right camera at the right price for their needs. It is reasonably rugged and simple to operate, yet it still allows access to all my existing AF Nikon lenses. It is a great value and gets the job done.

This camera is easy to use and proves why moving to a SLR from a point and shoot is a worthwhile investment. Upgrading the lens is not a necessity but is does give it that 'souped up' feel.

I purchased the D40 factory refurb to carry on trips due to its small size as a DSLR. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality - it looked like a brand new camera and Nikon provided all the accessories as new along with a 90 day warranty. Very pleased with the purchase and a steal of a price!

Nikon D40 comparatively the other models as to Cânon XS, that has similar cost it is still superior with relationship to the image quality, something that defined my option for her. The sensor is very good and better of the one of Nikon D3000.
I recommend.

Comments about Nikon D40 SLR Digital Camera Kit with 18-55mm Lens:
As a beginner, I've been looking for the best DSLR camera that I can easily and quickly learn. Nikon D40 is so far the best! The 18-55mm lens that came with it is exceptional. It's easy to operate and learn.
The operating modes are very intuitive. I love this camera even if it has only 6.5 megapixel. It's lightweight and incomparable for a novice user like me.

Was looking for an upgrade from my Sony Point and Shoot (which itself wasnt cheap - it went for $399 last year!), but I am no professional and didnt want to spend too much. The quality of the pics on our new Nikon vs the Sony just doesnt compare. The clarity, the colors, the depth, Ive only had it for 3 days and have already taken 100 shots and we are thrilled with this camera!

I use this for capturing my 3 yr old grandson who never stays still. I get so many more of the shots I would have missed with my point and shoot camera. Also scenery and nature shots come crystal clear. This is my first SLR,(it was a gift) and it was a great choice.

Comments about Nikon D40 SLR Digital Camera Kit with 18-55mm Lens:
I'm still learning how to use the camera, but it takes really great pictures. I've only ever had point-and-shoot cameras and they just don't compare. I'm still getting used to the larger size camera, but it's worth it for the better pictures. The colors of the pictures are fantastic. I would definately recommend the Nikon brand in general. Everyone in my family owns one.

Camera is mainly used to capture the fast and crazy movements of the 3 kiddos who are always on the go. I love how light weight it is, and all the setting options.
The one complaint I have is that a lot of the pictures are blurry, I am pretty sure It something that I have to figure out though..

Comments about Nikon D40 SLR Digital Camera Kit with 18-55mm Lens:
I was required to purchased a SLR camera for my photo class...the D40 happened to be the cheapest Nikon model. Considering my knowledge of digital cameras is just beginning to expand, the D40 is a great start. The pictures, when the settings are properly set, are beautiful.
At the same time, it does have fewer features than the "higher end" cameras a lot of my colleagues have. The lens especially seems limited in comparison to others...I'll have to buy a better one when I'll be able to afford it.
Overall, GREAT camera, particularly for beginners!

As an avid animal lover and care-giver to 23 animals (dogs and cats mostly), people have begged me for photos of the pets over the years. I've been too embarrassed to show them the ones taken with my traditional digital camera. My Nikon D40 SLR has changed everything! For the first time I am proudly showing off my pack-in pictures! So easy to use and the color quality is amazing!!

DX-Nikkor lenses are engineered and optimized for use on Nikon DX-format D-SLRs and are designed to cover the smaller image area of the DX sensor. When a DX lens is mounted on an FX-format Nikon D-SLR, the camera's DX-Crop Mode is automatically engaged, introducing a 1.5x magnification (cropping) factor.
