The Wireless-N Gigabit Security Router with VPN from Linksys combines the functions of a Cable/DSL router, a wireless access point and a VPN gateway into one compact device. The router allows you to share your Internet connection between several computers that can connect via the draft 802.11n wireless protocol or via any of four wired RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet ports. The router is also fully backwards compatible with legacy 802.11b/g devices.
The router also features a firewall to protect you from malicious software that can attack your computer from the Internet, as well as wireless security to insure that your data remains private.
The router can achieve speeds of 300 Mbps via the draft 802.11n wireless connection and it is also fully backward compatible with devices that use the older 54 Mbps 802.11g and 11 Mbps 802.11b standard. These features make the wireless router a great way to add wireless access to your home network.

My wife works from home full-time and I frequently work from home. Both of us require VPN connections to our respective employer networks. Unfortunately, most home-use wireless routers (read: all the ones I have owned) only support a single VPN connection. I went looking for a consumer level or SOHO wireless router that could support multiple VPN connections.
The WRVS4400N is perfect for our needs. Cisco categorizes it as a small business router but I would argue the home user and SOHO community could use a router with this level of functionality. In any case, this router can be found for a price that puts it in competition with the most full-featured consumer-level routers with far greater functionality.
See the Cisco website for full details and features of this router. Those I find most useful or noteworthy are wireless-N utilizing MIMO, Gigabit Ethernet switch (4-port), strong SPI firewall and IPS, multi-user VPN support, mixed WPA wireless security support, QoS, and DMZ hosting support.
As mentioned, the feature I find most valuable with the WRVS4400N is the multiple VPN support. Out of the box it supports up to five simultaneous VPN connections. Support for more than five simultaneous connections can be enabled by purchasing additional licenses from Cisco. The VPN connections can be to the same place or to five different locations. Further, the router provides VPN "in" access; allowing remote users to access my own network through a secure VPN connection.
Setup was extremely simple despite the robust feature set. Default settings are secure and stable such that you could literally plug-and-play. For those who choose to tailor the settings to their needs, the web-based utility is well-organized and easy to navigate.
My only complaint is that there are only 4 Ethernet ports. Of course Cisco makes comparably featured routers with more ports so it might be unfair to call this a con.
I highly recommend this router to those who need more capability than what you might find in a big-box or office supply store but do not need a high-end commercial unit. And of course it is also perfectly suited for the small business community for which it appears to be primarily marketed towards.

Business network with a server, network printer, and a few computers.
DHCP is not reliable, often has trouble issuing IP addresses. Especially with devices that are not always 'on'. We had to turn off a few features to get it work work and it is still not at 100%. Tech support on the product to get a warranty replacement is dismal.

Eliminated connection problems and significantly increased speed. No longer needing to refresh 3 to 5 times to have a webpage download completely.

Comments about Cisco Wireless-N Gigabit Security Router with VPN:
Bought it mainly for its VPN support to access the home LAN from WAN. It's easy to set up but took a while to figure out that on the client side, some ports have to be open and the traffic cannot be sustained just through the client initiated TCP connection. That means, for example, I need to tell my sys admin at work to put my work computer in DMZ -- a big no no for our organization... So at the end, I just used the wireless network at work which is more relaxed security wise. A better solution, as I did before, is to run OpenVPN on a Linux box inside the home LAN and no special ports are needed to be open on the client side...

We were having trouble with IP address conflicts because of how many wireless devices were trying to use the (old) router. This new router, the Cisco....it solved those problems, and maybe even helped us have faster internet access.

VLAN has issues with DHCP. Once you have a Server on any of the VLANs you created it will broadcast to ALL VLANS on the router, even if they are isolated, truncked or whatever. If your intention is to use it for Business network with Servers, try another model! I've spent over 20h within a week with Cisco Tech support on this issue and their recommendation was to try another model for my VLAN needs!

I haven't found ANYTHING about this router to be an issue or a reason not to purchase it. If you're planning on setting up a vpn, proxy, or NAS (that will be accessed through the internet) for home or small business use, "Just purchase this router". It also plays well with ddns unlike my E3000. All of the wired port is 10/100/1000 and on the front display of the router it will let you know what connection speed is being using for which port. I also use it while accessing the NAS wirelessly and the speeds are fine for me. I'm getting about 35mbits while sending info to it wirelessly. Media playback from the NAS wirelessly is fine too. I'm using the router in compatibility mode. Setup was easy.

Purchased the WRVS4400N as a replacement router and upgrade to VPN capabilities. Our ISP is Verizon FIOS (business) and the setup was very straightforward.
After using the router in both wired and wireless capacity I then setup VPN. Again, everything moved through the setup nicely and over the past 24 hours the VPN function has worked well.

Lots of advantage to this router. I needed a router that would have a guest account. I tried many linksys like the valet and the E3000 but they continued to drop. So with this I created two Vlans so that no one can Access my server or share computer on the LAN.

We use this product for our small office. We had an old router that could not handle the small handful of computers. Once we installed this new router our Internet is faster and it has not failed once. Easily the best decision we have made without an IT person onsite. It has saved us from many more frustrated and less efficient days.

I was having intermittent and on-going problems with my of Netgear router for over 6 months. I changed my cable modem (which was also outdated) updated firmware and waited to see if anything helped. Nothing worked until I purchased the Cisco router. Immediately after installing the Cisco router my performance improved and I have been connected without failure for over 10days straight for the first time in 2010.
