I have used this product for a while and got to personally compare it with DCR -SR42. Both have theire advantages and disadvantages , so let me chart this out for you -
SR42 vs SR-200
1. Quality -
SR200 -> Very good quality. Amazing in low lights conditions as well. Night mode is also a worth feature. There is no motor sound in any video and the mic has a good reception.
SR42 -> So-So quality. Low light output is ok. Night mode stands comparable to SR200 and the sound too . So only thing as far as quality is concerned is the vidoe quality.
2. Zoom ->
SR200 -> A mere 10X optical zoom , is just OK. I found myself handicapped at quite a few instances with the low zoom capability.
SR42 -> Really stands out with a 40X optical zoom. Focuses well even on the high zoom and this is really a great PLUS for this handycam.
I would have loved to see the SR200 with a high Zoom capability.
3. Still Images ->
SR200 -> A 4mp camera really allows u to carry just this , and leave ur digital camera at home.
SR42 -> A VGA camera, u need to carry ur still camera along.
4. Shutter ->
SR200 -> Automatic - so needn't worry about opening or closing it .
SR42 -> Manual - it is kinda annoying. You tend to forget to open it or close it . And when you want to capture some sudden dynamic moments, this manual thing will make you lose imp moments.
5. Price - Not much difference b/w the 2 comparing the features that they offer.
6. Handycam Stattion -> The most annoying feature for both. For transferring images/videos to computer, or connecting it to a TV you need to put the camcorder onto a handycam station. I really hate this limitation. Unfortunately all sony's have this, not sure of other brands.
Conclusion -> SR200 is a great handycam, more optical zoom capability would have made this anyone's blind choice.
So if you are not really into more Optical zooming, then go for sr200. Otherwise you may want to try a Tape one . I do not recommend a DVD one, because of its DVD limitation.
Tape is anyday better .
But coming back on SR200 and SR42 . My take -> DCR SR200.

I have used this camcorder for a month now. The use has been all indoors. The recording quality is not so bad indoors (provided you have good lighting). In low lighting areas, there is a lot of graining. I did cut a DVD. The video quality is good but was a little disappointed with audio. I am hearing lots of background humming noise in the recording which kind of ruins the whole experience. The battery hanging out side the device is a little ugly. The touch screen is very small. Decent buy for the price. Dont expect too much from this handycam.

Comments about Sony DCR-SR200 Digital Camcorder:
I did a lot of research before purchasing a HDD camcorder, and I finally ended on this one. It has numerous features which are all easy to use! I've had no problems with this camera at all, and I'm not exactly a seasoned camera user! It takes excellent pictures, and the footage is good quality. One draw back is the lack of a light & therefore is somewhat grainy in low lighting, but there are tons of accessories you can purchase (all pretty expensive though).
Overall, easy to use, and transfer files, easy to take pics and print them off with the micro SD expansion slot, small and compact, durable, no probs! The only thing is that it comes with a small battery, which doesn't last very long & therefore you are forced to buy a longer lasting one to get any real recording time at all! For the price they could have added in a larger battery for us!
I would definitely recommend this! It was well worth the money, and buying from B&H Photo was easy, and hassel-free! Thanks!!

Comments about Sony DCR-SR200 Digital Camcorder:
Pros:
- Handycam is compact and easy to handle.
- Videos are stored as separate files each time we shoot. So, no accidental overwrite.
- Digital pics are coming out with reasonably good quality.
- Most functionalities are through touch-screen.
Cons:
- Absence of button operated equivalents of the touch-screen functionalities.
- The setup to fit battery to the camcorder is very flimsy and may be prone to damange.
- The on/off button is a bit weirdly designed.
Haven't tried any of the s/w that comes with it.

This is a great camcorder. I picked it up about a month ago, and it's been wonderful. It's simple to use, and the quality has been great outdoors and pretty good inside as well.
I was considering going Hi-Def, but the reality is that editing HD video is going to be a major pain for probably a couple more years on consumer machines ... and with upconverting DVD players, this is almost the same quality.
The battery life has been excellent, and I never have to worry about running out of tape.

This is my first hard drive handy cam.The image and sound clarity are too good. Will be very useful for family trips, weddings and travel.The night mode does not give the expected result.the Software provided does not work with vista, we need to go to sony website for getting vista support.Its has only 10X zoom which i consider as a limitation.The picture shot from this handy cam has a very good Quality.Battery life is not that so great and separate battery charger does not comes with the Pack.overall i'm highly satisfied with the SR 200!!!

Comments about Sony DCR-SR200 Digital Camcorder:
After spending some time researching, I found B&H to be the best price for the options I was looking for. I chose the Sony SR200 because of the features. I wanted something with a hard drive (as my last camcorder used tapes and I have a ton of them laying all over the place). The touch screen is easy to use. The still pic option has a great flash so the pic quality is great. I like using the video and still pic option at the same time especially when filming events where video and still pics are great to have.The battery life could be better, but given the excellence of this camcorder, I would not let this discourage anyone from purchasing. This was a gift for my 13 year old son.
He does skateboard videos.
He takes care of his stuff but skateboard video is loaded with crash and burn. In other words it gets constant use in rough places. Works like a swiss watch !!!

Haven't got enough time to explorer this camcorder.
Pros - image quality, easy to operate, zoom, free bag !
Cons - little slower auto focus
I would suggest wide angle lens (sold separately) for this camcorder. It might not be required in home, but when you are at outdoors and wish to cover more, you would feel need for wide angle lens.
