The B&W 58mm Soft Focus Attachment Soft Pro Glass Diffusion Filter is used to give flattering softness to portraits and landscapes. By using a series of fine-grade "lenticular protrusions", the light is diffused enough to create a slight halo while retaining sharpness. This effect is especially effective when photographing women and even more effective when blond hair is present since it generates highlights off the lighter hair color. This filter is also particularly effective when a dreamy, ethereal look is desired.

Comments about B+W 58mm Soft Focus Attachment Soft Pro Glass Diffusion Filter:
I have tried this filter on 90 and 135 mm lenses, at various apertures, and at various subject distances. I consulted the B+W Filter "Handbook" for guidance.
The problem is that out-of-focus background elements are severely distorted except under the following narrow circumstances:
>focal length greater than or equal to 135 mm
>aperture narrower than f/8, depending on the shape of background elements
>camera-to-subject distance less than 20 feet
Otherwise, in very bright or specular out-of-focus highlights, a mottled ("Swiss cheese") pattern is seen.
Over many years, I have not had these problems with the Softar I, used on a 105 mm lens.
The Soft Pro filter would be fine only in a studio or under similar, controlled circumstances.
