The Gitzo GT2540G Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs uses advanced "Carbon 6X" carbon fiber material for its leg construction. This improved tubing is stronger, lighter and as resistant as its 12 layer predecessor. Carbon "6X" is manufactured using a complex, 3-D process weaving 6 layers of carbon fiber into smooth, solid constructed tubes.
The GT2540G is ideal for use with DSLRs with 200mm lenses (up to a 300mm maximum), lightweight camcorders, and spotting scopes. It offers an excellent load capacity rating of 26.4 lbs (12 kg), and good torsional rigidity. The geared center column mechanism allows for precise and secure height adjustment of the column.

Comments about Gitzo GT-2540G Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
I have the Gitzo 2540, without the geared column. I've owned this product for over a year and find it to be wonderful. Lightweight, compact, durable. It's very sturdy with proper technique. As for the post before, I have not had any issue with anything coming apart, and I treat my tripod a bit rough, backpacking with it on the outside of my pack. I have an Acratech ball head on it and find the two to be a very good combination. I doubt I would use the geared column. Truthfully, I remove my column the majority of the time, and mount the platform directly to the tripod, works great. The only downside is the cost.

Comments about Gitzo GT-2540G Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
Overall a good product, legs lock in very tight, unlocks and folds with ease. The geared column works well but cranking it up is tricky because the crank doesn't lock in well as you turn it. My biggest complaint is that the mounting plate was not properly attached to the column - it came off one time, but luckily I was holding the tripod head and saved the camera. It seems that the plate was held in place by nothing more than a thin layer of adhesive. I re-attached it with JB Weld and expect it to stay in place... forever.
