Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Autofocus Lens Imported
The Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens is an ultra compact, lightweight standard zoom lens that has a 3x focal zoom range and is ideally suited to compact Nikon digital SLR cameras with the DX size sensor.
This lens offers the most basic zoom range in the DX lens series, an equivalent focal length in 35mm terms of 27-82.5mm. It will conveniently cover everything from tight indoor portraits to standard snap shots.
Note: Use of DX lenses are not recommended with 35mm, "full-frame" FX type cameras (e.g. D3, D700), or APS SLR cameras.

- Optics
- One ED glass element and one hybrid aspherical lens element guarantee high-resolution, high-contrast images while minimizing chromatic aberration, astigmatism and other forms of distortion.
- SWM (Silent Wave Motor)
- The improved SWM built into the lens offers smooth and quiet autofocus performance.
- Rounded Diaphragm
- The rounded diaphragm opening (7 blades) makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural.
- M/A Mode
- M/A mode allows rapid switching between autofocus and manual even during AF servo operation, with virtually no time lag.

This is small, handy, very sharp and cheap. What more can you ask for? Although I am more used to shoot with my 17-55mm f/2.8 which is one of the heaviest lens in its class, this one solved the problem when i want to be more mobile with my D200. I also recommend reading the review by ken rockwell at his website about this lens. go to search and type Nikon 18-55mm ED II. Take note that ED II is a lot sharper than the older version which only says 18-55mm ED. Dont think twice about this lens, this is one of the best Nikon lens that i ever used. Compared to my 17-55mm f/2.8 Nikon G lens which is worth $1,100.00, the image quality of this $120.00 is almost the same. They will only differ in the aperture and speed in focusing in low light situation, but if you are not into that, go ahead and order this now. This is even better than the 18-135mm, 18-70mm.

This lens came as the kit lens with my D40 camera. The lens has a plastic bayonet mount. The plastic rails lasted just over one year before two of the three rails broke off. Preliminary repair estimates from Nikon indicate that it will cost $77.00 to repair for [$] lens. Nikon should not be making lenses with plastic mounts no matter how basic the lens is meant to be.I would not recommend this lens to an enemy!It would be helpful if B&H would indicate the material of the mount on the specification sheets.

I received this lens as a gift so I can't complain. Though having done some research and playing around with it a bit I think given the choice I would have given a few other lenses a look. I think part of my problem is that the first lens I got was a 35mm prime lens, which is wonderfully crisp and goes to f1.8 I miss the wider aperture.
Unfortunately this version of the lens doesn't include VR (vibration reduction), so if you can I would probably go for that one if I had the chance. So would I recommend it? Not enthusiastically, no. But I still use it and will continue to do so until I can spend a bit more.

This lens was purchased to replace the one that came with my D90 kit almost 3 years ago. The plastic mount broke off when the camera was placed in a large purse rather than its normal carrying case. Optics are great, and the focal length works well for shooting a variety of subjects. If the mount was made of metal, this would be a 5!

I purchased this lens to replace the Tamron lens that came with my Nikon D90. I was a little hesitant of this lens at first because it was so inexpensive. I decided to purchase it based on the price and WOW was I surprised when I got it. The super wide angle makes it nice to see the entire setting without having to back up a mile. As for the picture quality, I couldn't be happier. The ED lens is impressive and second to none! I would highly recommend this lens, as it would be a nice addition to any photographers arsenal. -Jon

Bought it specifically for light-weight travel with a D5K body. Optical quality is quite good, build quality is satisfactory, especially considering the price.
The only thing that should be kept in mind by those that consider using this lens is the need to always keep at hand a lens hood of some description, at least in sunny days outdoors, as the front element is quite "exposed"; get a 52mm screw-in rubber "wide-angle" lens hood, since a "normal-focal-length" hood will vignette below 21mm.
