This is small, handy, very sharp and cheap. What more can you ask for? Although I am more used to shoot with my 17-55mm f/2.8 which is one of the heaviest lens in its class, this one solved the problem when i want to be more mobile with my D200. I also recommend reading the review by ken rockwell at his website about this lens. go to search and type Nikon 18-55mm ED II. Take note that ED II is a lot sharper than the older version which only says 18-55mm ED. Dont think twice about this lens, this is one of the best Nikon lens that i ever used. Compared to my 17-55mm f/2.8 Nikon G lens which is worth $1,100.00, the image quality of this $120.00 is almost the same. They will only differ in the aperture and speed in focusing in low light situation, but if you are not into that, go ahead and order this now. This is even better than the 18-135mm, 18-70mm.

Expertise: Active hobbyist

Problems Encountered: Definitely none.

This lens came as the kit lens with my D40 camera. The lens has a plastic bayonet mount. The plastic rails lasted just over one year before two of the three rails broke off. Preliminary repair estimates from Nikon indicate that it will cost $77.00 to repair for [$] lens. Nikon should not be making lenses with plastic mounts no matter how basic the lens is meant to be.I would not recommend this lens to an enemy! It would be helpful if B&H would indicate the material of the mount on the specification sheets.

Comments about Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Autofocus Lens:

It's not the best lens out there by far, but I like it because it's cheap, and gets the job done. I would suggest it to someone as a back-up lens, for someone who does photography as a hobby or someone who is just starting out. It's a good beginner lens, because you don't have to worry about it breaking and losing a boatload of money as a result. It's made mostly out of hard plastic, so its not the most sturdy material.

I got my first one with my very first dslr and it eventually broke (slid off track inside). However, It lasted me four years through some aggressive beginner abuse. Now that I'm more careful with my machinery, I bought a higher quality lens, and bought a replacement one of these. I just fancy it's utilitarian uses, so it's primarily a back-up or one that I use in iffy scenarios where I have to worry about it breaking.

The breakdown: Works decently enough in every situation. It's cheap, lightweight. Not the best out there, but it does its job. Not the most durable material, but it will still last you for a while.

This little lens is awesome! Certainly perfect, but really nice. This actually surprised me as it turns out to be amazing at macro photography. It takes very good looking photos, and has incredible depth of field, even when it is fully extended and the aperture at f/5.6. It doesn't autofocus very quickly and the focus ring is a bit loose. I haven't had to change the lens much, so I'm not sure how the mount holds up. It doesn't zoom far, but the range it does zoom is pretty nice. It will take slightly wide-angled shots to slightly zoomed -in shots. Is it a pro-quality lens? No. But, is it the best entry-level kit lens you could ask for? I'd say so!

Slow to focus, but I expected that at this price. Optics seem very good. I am very wary of the cheap plastic mount so I handle it like a baby. Shame on Nikon for going so cheap. Most of us would happily pay a little more for a solid mount.

Comments about Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Autofocus Lens:

I bought this as my first lens with an adapter to go along with a Panasonic GH1 which is used primarily for video. It has trouble with low light and it is frustrating to only have 2 f-stops. However it does its just, looks the part, feels pretty solid overall and gives a decent image. Do not expect this to be a lens to end all lenses, but it is perfect if you're on a budget (like myself) if you are interested in testing the waters of photography/DSLR filmmaking.I would say the focus is a little too sensitive for my taste. I feel often like it is either to close or too far and never just perfect for a great shot. I did mention the overall construction is solid, I do feel like the plast focus is a little unstable. I do not expect it to break or anything like that; however when I did a rapid change of focus from as far as possible to as close as possible, it made a rather depressing sound of plastic hitting plastic, which came off as rather cheap. Nitpicky? certainly. Should this affect your decision to purchase this lens? Probably not. Worth mentioning? Apparently. If you get this lens and expect amazing things, you might be disappointed. If you purchase this lens expecting a great value, you will be extremely content and it should serve you rather well. If you expect a piece of [*], you will be wonderfully surprised!

Comments about Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Autofocus Lens:

The lens that came with my camera broke and I could not find a replacement lens anywhere in Fresno just like it, then I found B&H. It's perfect and I have my camera working like it's brand new!!!

                  Love it.

I got this to replace the previous version that came with my D50 kit. So far I am loving it! The focusing motor is much quieter and faster.

This is the first lens that I have bough for my digital SLR, and it may be the last. It does everything that I need it to do. It is sharp, finds focus well if I need to set it to auto, and is durable thus far. The zoom is nice but I just move myself if I need to get closer.
