Canon ES-78 Lens Hood for EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens
The Canon ES-78 is a dedicated lens hood, designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.
Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

I bought my 50L used and it didn't come with a hood. Even though the hood appears pricy, I don't like using my lenses without hoods so i had no choice but to replace it. I am happy.
