The Hi5 HD-SDI/SDI to HDMI Video and Audio Converter from AJA is a device designed to convert SDI or HD-SDI signals to HDMI for driving HDMI monitors. This unit also supports embedded SD/HD-SDI audio in the HDMI output, allowing for a convenient single-cable, audio-video connection.
The Hi5 provides 2-channel, RCA-style, audio outputs for the separate monitoring of audio feeds. It also offers a looping SDI/HD-SDI output, which is useful for connecting additional equipment or to achieve a daisy-chain configuration with multiple monitors running from the same SDI/HD-SDI source.
Note! Please note that this unit requires a power supply that is not included and must be purchased separately.

One of the problems our regional television facility faces is needing to monitor a number of high definition signals on a limited budget and using limited space. The AJA Hi5 solves both problems neatly.
This is a small box that can be easily hidden -- in my office, I have one stuck to the back of a Viewsonic VX2260wm widescreen LCD monitor with velcro, and the included HDMI cable just plugs right into the back of the monitor.
The Hi5 has a BNC input connector that accepts either HD-SDI or SD-SDI, with a buffered loopthrough output; the adjacent LED glows red when HD is present, green for SD, and turns off for no video. On the other side is the HDMI output connector, plus a pair of RCA output jacks for analog stereo audio. (The HDMI connector also passes the audio, so you don't necessarily need to use the RCA jacks.)
HD-SDI video may be either 1080i or 720p at various frame rates; SD-SDI video may be either 525i or 625i. If you need to convert 1080p video, the similar Hi5-3G will handle the higher data rate.
Audio is ordinarily derived from stereo pair 1, embedded in the video, but changing an internal jumper allows all eight embedded channels in an HD-SDI input to pass through to the HDMI output. There is no way to explicitly select which AES channel you want to use, but I would not have expected that sort of feature in such an inexpensive device.
The signal being passed to the monitor is excellent; the limiting factor to picture quality isn't the converter, but the monitor itself. When paired with even an inexpensive computer monitor, the result is crisper than some of our far costlier broadcast grade monitors. The only real downside is that you won't find some of the bells and whistles for reduced scan, pulse cross, and so forth. But for the majority of our applications, these functions are really not necessary.
Bottom line: the Hi5 allows us to get true HD monitoring where we need it for less than the cost of many professional SD monitors. We love it!

It is small
What is bad:
Found some issues with certain colors in certain monitors due to the data range compression. the problem could be due to the converter, the monitor or a mix of both.
Using the HDMI to SDI from the same brand (Ha5) and this SDI to HDMI and a PS3, I could not get any output.

Owning a HD SDX camera provide me with a slight challenge. What if I couldn't have two HD monitors that could convert my SDI siginal to an HD monitor. I found a simple solution in HDMI AJA converter. Not only did I get the HD quality picture I also got audio to the HD monitor/tv. Now my clients aren't crowded around my HD field monitor. They can relax, watch and listen in the confort of another room.
The only issue I has was the the power supply is sold seperately. What use is the Hi5 without the power supply?

This unit is used with a Kona Card to change SDI to HDMI for color correcting using a Sony Bravia consumer TV to simulate the final DVD end product look.
I choose to purchase AJA products because they have the best customer support before and after the sale. They work as advertised.

A great solution/alternative to preview full HD from my Matrox Axio LE.
I was able to use the AJA converter to output to a 1080i 32" LCD Sony Bravo that is mounted on my wall. Works great and looks awesome for a fraction of the price of purchasing a high priced, and smaller studio monitor with SDI input.
Only negative is you need to purchase transformer separately.

We were using our expensive HD Studio monitor in the field for shoots but decided to buy the Hi5 SDI to HDMI converter and a inexpensive HD receiver. Since we use the monitor for basic set composition and clients using the Hi5 and a HD receiver was a great alternative. Hi5 works as advertized

Comments about AJA Hi5 HD-SDI/SDI to HDMI Video and Audio Converter:
Great little converter box. Anyone using this is most likely a pro, since SDI isn't exactly meant for consumers. But the HD SDI to HDMI looks very clean, and the SD SDI to HDMI looks much better than our previous option, which was running an SD signal via analog component to the monitor, and then the in-monitor (Plasma) chip did the up conversion (from SD to HD). Allows use of HDMI monitoring of SDI content. Would have given 5 stars, except for the fact that you get gouged when having to purchase separate power supply. [...]

Several reasons I like this over the HDlink... it offers an HDSDI through - even if you don't need it, you may very well some day, and it'll save you buying an HDSDI DA. Also, it scales appropriately with DVI monitors... the Black Magic one only scales with HDMI monitors (so if you run a 720p signal to a dell monitor for instance, the AJA goes full screen, the HDlink shows a small pixel-per-pixel box in the middle of the screen.
