The Canon Tripod Mount Ring A-2 is the tripod collar for the EF 70-200mm f/4L (both IS and non-IS versions) lens. By adding a tripod collar to your lens you can achieve better balancing on a tripod. In addition, rotating the camera will now be much easier and faster.

For years I did without a tripod mount ring as I was being hardnosed about paying the seemingly ridiculous price for one. Mounted on my camera and the camera to the tripod, it mostly was satisfactory but with any wind the cantilevered lens, especially with lens hood on, would quiver. More recently I purchased a much lighter tripod/head for hiking. That forced me to deal with the wisdom of continuing to use my mounting via the camera vs tripod mount ring on the lens itself, especially in the less stable flopped over position for verticals. I got lucky and found a used one for 50% of retail. Having it used one for several months now, retail still seems more expensive than it should be BUT it still is worth the price. Stability is dramatically better and the flexibility to switch from portrait to landscape by just spinning within the mount ring is ever so much more convenient. Wish I had done it years ago.

For those considering knockoffs, I can't speak for all of them but I did receive one from a sympathetic and well intentioned friend. It ONLY held the ring closed by tension on the other piece. There was no secure locking, meaning my whole apparatus could suddenly open and hit the ground. The real Canon is not only screwed in for tension but additionally must be pulled out to release it, ie open the ring....an invaluable piece of design. Unless other knockoffs also include that feature I wouldn't even consider them. How would you know which do? Good luck, on the many I've looked at online I could never determine if any did....none say they do.

Bought this for the 70-200 f4. Nice and solid, attaches easily and rotates smoothly. A must have especially on a non stabilized lens.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring A-2 for 70-200mm f/4L:

There are many low quality versions of this mount ring that are readily available and inexpensive. I have one of these but it won't be used anymore. This ring holds my 70-200 f/4L firmly, no wiggle here. I want to be confident that what's holding my camera and lens is going to hold. No doubt about this ring. The one draw back I have noticed so far is the knob is small so tightening requires attention.

Needed to get this to help me support the weight of a new 70-200 lens. It went on the camera easily and connecting the tripod was a snap. Now all I need is better lighting in the high school gym.

I've never used one of these before so I was skeptical. But after putting it on my lens I'm very happy with it. Even when not used with a tripod it still helps with a steadier handheld shot. It also makes it smoother to zoom also.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring A-2 for 70-200mm f/4L:

Like other users have noted, the Canon mounting ring is unreasonably expensive, but at least you get what you pay for. The ring fits perfectly on my 70-200 f/4 telephoto and the whole assembly feels very secure. There is an interlock so the ring won't pop open even after you loosen the screw - you have to pull the screw out to pop the ring open. Also, it is very handy being able to loosen the screw and rotate the whole camera + lens into portait orientation, rather than flipping the tripod head over. The lens + mounting ring have alignment marks for "level" in landscape orientation, but no marks for when you rotate into portrait orientation, which would be nice. I got this mounting ring to provide better balance when using the camera + telephoto on a monopod, and the balance is greatly improved compared to attaching the monopod to the camera bottom. Also with a monopod, rotating the camera + lens for portrait mode is very easy, since monopods don't usually have a pan/tilt head that you can flip over. Overall, it's well made and works fine, but I resent the very high price. When you look at the cheap alternatives, though, it's hard to trust your lens + camera to them especially since the cheap rings generally get poor reviews.

I'm using this ring on a 72-200 L IS f/4 lens. With it, I have the peace of mind that it won't fail like some knock-offs do. I only wish that Canon had included a small instructional note to explaining that you have to pull hard to get the split ring apart, rather than trying to fit it over the small end of the lens. I found out quickly enough, but still... Actually, in my opinion, this item should be included with the lens purchase.

The tripod mounting ring for the 70-200mm f/4L IS does exactly what it is designed to do. Allows free ballanced movement from Horizontal to Vertical positioning of the camera while adding much more stability to the camera/lens setup. A must have in my opinion. A bit pricy but worth it!

I'm in love with this tripod ring. It's constructed flawlessly and I have no complaints about the ring mount itself. The one complaint I do have is about the price. [$] for a metal ring? Lower the price and you'll have many more happy customers.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring A-2 for 70-200mm f/4L:

I bought this to better balance my lens/camera on a tripod/monopod when using the longer end of the focal length. Mounting the camera on the tripod, there was noticable "vibration" for a second or two from touching the lens/camera but the tripod ring fixed that problem resulting in sharper photos. Better balance + less shake = sharper photos. I would also like to note that the tripod I use is very robust and virtually shake-free.

I have to agree with the crowd that Canon priced this a little high or should have included it with the lens, but overall I am happier with the results I'm getting out of the lens now.

The mounting ring is well made and fits the lens perfectly.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring A-2 for 70-200mm f/4L:

I was on the fence about buying one of the knock-off versions for 1/5th the price, but decided to play it safe with the Canon version. It has a nice balance on my tripod and makes it a snap to rotate from landscape to portrait mode. I'd prefer a definite snap or locking sound when it's fastened properly around my lens, just for reassurance. Quality-wise, it seems set to last for the life of the lens.

Could not work with the 70-200 F4L lens on a monopod due to movement caused by lack of balance. With the ring it is very steady.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring A-2 for 70-200mm f/4L:

I thought the Canon mount ring was overpriced. So I did a little searching and found many mount rings made by third parties that sell for only $10 - $15, far less than the Canon ring. So I bought one of the cheaper ones. It looked great but unfortunately it didn't do what it was supposed to do, i.e. it didn't hold the camera and lens steady on the tripod. I could lightly push on the back of the camera and the camera and lens would rock forward. So I replaced it with the Canon ring and found that it works perfectly. Even when I push the back of the camera with the lens in the ring and the camera on a tripod they don't move a bit. The reason appears to be that the Canon ring clamps shut with a spring-loaded lock that holds the ring firmly around the lens. The cheaper version doesn't have that kind of lock. Which doesn't seem like a big deal but it makes all the difference. After all, the point of buying one of these things is to hold the camera and lens perfectly steady. The Canon ring does that, the cheap imitation I bought doesn't.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring A-2 for 70-200mm f/4L:

Although many photographers have said that the 70-200/F does not need a ring, I use it on a very light carbon fiber Gitzo while backpacking, and the increase in stability when using the ring is huge! I've been working waterfalls with 30 second exposures and a remote cable switch and the ease of using my set-up now that I have the ring is awesome. Its easier to lock the ball-head in place without the nose dropping, its way easier to level the camera, and I no longer have to worry about my rig falling over when in portrait format because I just rotate the lens in the ring! Could I get the shot without it? Yes, if I wasn't under a time constraint. But I get in more shots and I can worry more about composition and less about unstable equipment--an altogether more enjoyable experience!

I tried buying a cheap knock-off from e bay. I got it and while it wasn't terrible I didn't have a hugely high degree of confidence. Since I needed to have one of these I decided to just order the Canon made one rather than experiment with more knock offs. It's Canon quality, well built and that comes with with price you have to pay for it. I don't understand why Canon doesn't include this with the 70-200 f4 IS and why the gouge you on it so bad. So from a value perspective, it's not something to write home about but it is, again, a quality product.Had I had more patience I would have ordered more knockoffs until I found a decent one, which I'm confident I would have. The price is the reason it gets 3 stars.Almost goes without saying but BH is great. [...]
