The adapter is required for use of any filter or lens add on. The problem isnt with the adapter its with the SP series camera not having a threaded lens versus where the threads are on the SP series is actually on the body. The downfall is with the adapter installed you have to have the camera zoomed out so as not to see the adapter, its as if looking through a tube when your not zoomed out, this creates issues when utilizing lens filters and not wanting to be in zoom mode.

This attachment is need to use the TCON-17 on the Olympus SP570. The combination of the two attachemnts adds some length to the lens, but it is manageable. One point I liked was you could turn the camera off with having to remove the attachments, so if one is taking a break you do not need to leave the camera on and so forth.
