I bought this flash for my 500D and it's helped my photography quite a bit. I could bounce the flash from the ceiling or wall, whereas using my built-in I was limited to direct (or hacking a business card to try bouncing to ceiling).
Most of my use has been indoors taking pictures of my kids. Using it outside as a fill flash works, however your limited to the max synch speed of your camera (1/200 for mine...no high speed synch feature). Not so good when kids are running around or occasional fast critters. Also, using default settings for flash compensation tends to overexpose the image slightly. I've had to use -1/3 to -1 for most pictures, but being the beginner I am this could also be user error.
I haven't had the need to do this, but wanted to note that this flash is not compatible with any wireless triggers. For that you'd have to buy the di866, or mod the di622 yourself. The off-camera cord should work however. There is also the optical slave feature but I haven't tested this out yet.

Works great for bouncing light off the ceiling to illuminate a room. Quick recovery time between shots, sometimes not quite quick enough though. I struggled when using it with high ceilings, but I assumed that would be a problem anyway. I recently used it for a wedding. I am really happy with it overall and am happy I saved the money by not buying the actual Canon flash.

Flash is what I hoped it would be. Just like the Canon 430EX only $80.00 cheaper. I highly recommend this flash. It works beautifully with my Canon XSI/450D

I am an amateur photographer, primary use of flash is to substitute the camera built in flash. Flash construction seems sturdy. One week since flash arrived and photographs have improved greatly. Very powerfull flash. Good recycle time and not to noisy.

This is a well constructed flash with fast recycling and simple controls. It works in Live View mode on my Rebel XS. Follow the instructions and it functions quite nicely. The built in bounce/diffuser produces a nice soft light with the head tilted slightly forward. Overall, a good flash.
