I previously owned an Onkyo 605 which had performed very well for me for about 6 months. I recently upgraded a few other pieces of my HT and wanted more power from my receiever. Because of my good experiences with the 605, I chose to move up to the 805.
The 805 is, in my opinion, the best receiver you can buy at this price point. I compared it with receivers from many different other companies including Yamaha, Denon, Marantz, Sony, etc. and none of the others offered a feature set that could match the 805 at this low, low price. It is all around a great sounding and very powerful receiver that can support all of your needs in Blu-Ray audio.
The only negative to this receiver is the video upconverting. It is well known that the video upconversion in the 805 is not much better than that in the 605 and should be avoided. When I've tried to upconvert component, s-video, or composite signals to run over HDMI, the result is a jumpy, greenish-tinted, blurry mess. You probably know that going in and it's not really a big deal if you want to use this thing for what it was built for, the audio! But still, it would be nice to have the video upconversion quality of the 875. I've only deducted 1 star for this as I still love the receiver.
Highly recommended!!

After arrival of the speakers, I was finally able to set up my AV receiver. To my dismay, the remote control had a "sticky" volume control button. The remote burned up a set of batteries before I realized the volume button sticks in down (lower volume) position. I contacted Onkyo support to see if we could swap the broken remote for a new one. They would not do so, even though the system was only about 35 days old. Support said that i needed to ship it to their service center at my expense and they would repair or replace it. The SR805 is a very sophisticated receiver and is difficult to operate without the remote control.
I would have hoped, in the interest of good customer relations, they would have shipped me a new remote, while I returned the defective one.

So far, unit has been excellent and performed as expected. People should be aware that the weight of the unit is quite heavy (50+ lbs). Set-up was very easy. Great product for the price (Onkyo has already released its replacement).
Unit also generates a lot of heat so place in well ventilated position.

this receiver has all the bells and whistles you need to recreate an unbelievable home theater sound.
The set up is well explained and the auto calibration feature for the speakers is easy to follow even for a novice.
Dollar for dollar this is the best receiver in this price range by far.

Tricky to connect component X360 and HDMI dvd to this unit and then run hdmi to projector. But it can be done. The sound is great! The unit is heavy, but how often do you pick up your receiver. Just put it in place and leave it. As an added bonus, the unit doubles as a heater in the winter since it runs so hot. Get one of those wood stove fans and place it on top of this receiver and you have warm air circulating throughout your room. Besides being hot, this receiver is everything I wanted it to be. I like it, I like it, I like it!!!!!!

Did my research, and most pointed to the Onkyo 805 as an above average AVR. This was true back when it was released at around $900 last summer; at the price I paid B&H it was an absolute steal. Have no doubt I can sell it in the used market for close to what I paid, since the replacement 806 is deemed a downgrade from the 805.
Though it does not sound quite as good as my Onix tube amp it is still very clean sounding and effortless (prob an unfair comparison anyway.) Easy to set up; even the remote is serviceable. All in all highly recommended.

I would recommend this receiver to someone who is upgrading from a low quality or no previous AV receiver. I upgraded from a 5.1 channel 120 watt Onkyo that was 4-5 years old and I thought I would notice a bigger difference going to 7.1 and getting uncompressed audio via Blu-ray, but it just wasn't a huge difference. I do like this receiver, it just wasn't worth it for the difference in sound quality in my opinion. The price here at B&H was a steal though. I highly recommend buying here.

First receiver I've owned. I did lots of research and this was easily the highest rated, especially for the price. I've been adding speakers and it's incredibly easy and handles different configurations. I can't wait to hook up zone 2 to my deck. More connections than you can ever use, buy this receiver.

Comments about Onkyo TX-SR805B THX Ultra2 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black):
It has impressive features for the price of a mid-range A/V receiver. Units for other manufacturers at this price range have fewer features and lower quality specifications and power. B&H had the best price for this unit.
The TX-SR805B is a little on the large and heavy side, which could be an impediment for some people. Its power efficiency is lower than I would have preferred with the type of amplifier it has. In addition, the remote control is functional, but could have been more ergonomically designed, especially for use in a dark, home theater.

This unit is powering my theater system in a family room. It's a bit heavy and a little oversized, but it definitely delivers. Easy (and I mean EASY) set-up, due to clear, concise instructions with illustrations and examples. The automatic speaker set up and calibration specific to the designated room is amazingly simple to execute and provides impressive results! This is my second Onkyo.I purchased it to upgrade my system with HDMI inputs and more power. I couldn't be happier!!!
