The Canon EOS-1D Mark III SLR Digital Camera is a robust and durable professional digital SLR camera that uses a unique 10.1 effective megapixel CMOS sensor (APS-H size) with an integrated cleaning system to produce images of stunning quality.
The 45-point AF system provides fast and accurate focus, while the dual DIGIC III Image Processors work in tandem to speed up every process and refine image quality even further. The EOS-1D Mark III provides an amazing burst shooting capability of up to 10 fps continuously with a maximum of 110 shots in JPEG or 30 RAW images.
The Mark III version of the EOS-1D also delivers a lighter body with improved weather sealing and shutter durability as compared to previous models, and adds a very large 3.0" LCD monitor that incorporates Canon's Live View technology.

Comparing to the previous 1D models in the Canon line that I use: 1DmkI (since 2002), 1DmkII (since 2004), 1DmkIIN (since 2006), and now 1DmkIII (2009). The cameras are all used for outdoor field sports using the Canon 300f2.8, 400f2.8, and 600f4 lenses. I was worried about the mkIII focus issues, but having shot 1/3 of my season so far, I couldn't be happier with the mkIII. The AF in general seems to lock faster and the AI modes seem significantly more intelligent than the earlier models.
Pros
- the button layout compared to the older 1D versions is different but more functional (I am still not used to it), most key features seem to be one press away
- high ISO performance is significantly better than old models
- battery life is much improved over previous models (5 level battery meter is useful compared to old models with fewer levels)
- 10 frames per second (feels more responsive even when not bursting)
- AF point selection much easier using the joystick
- dedicated ISO selection button (display visible in view finder as you are selecting) makes it much easier to switch while shooting
- no driver necessary when tethered to a Windows computer
- takes better advantage of higher-speed CF and SD cards
- all of the custom settings are tunable without a computer (no more parameter settings)
- more logical layout of the custom parameter menus (grouped into categories by function)
- ability to review and scroll through images as they are being written to flash
Cons
- uses a new battery system (if you are upgrading from old 1D models it means a new set of batteries with charger)
- LCD resolution is poor for the size of the screen; the mkIIN had a better balance between screen size and pixel density
It is unfortunate that the camera had problems when it originally came out because the version that I have seems to be a very worthy successor in the 1D line.

Well I considered myself lucky. I got this camera back in July and had great luck with it...After the submirror "fix" was announced I held off, because mine was working so well. After a couple of months, I decided to go ahead and have the part replaced so I could be at the current spec and have my warranty renewed for an additional year.
Well...lo and behold, my camera comes back and severely front focuses with nearly every lens I have. This most certainly was not a "FIX". Anyway, after microcalibrating each lens and testing, and calibrating more...test, etc... I have a body that will give me satisfactory results, but not tack sharp results like I got with my Mark IIN, 5D, heck 20D...
I was about to send it back in, but have now heard rumors of yet another "FIX" that involves the sensor not being properly aligned (distance) from the lens mount. We'll see if this "FIX" comes to fruition.
Personally, I want a new body not one that has been disassembled over and over and has a kludgy "FIX".
Lot's of defectors to Nikon D3... Not me..yet. When the camera performs, it performs spectacularly. It's the inconsistence and amount of time spent (wish I could bill them back for it) trying to get my confidence back that irks me the most.
I'll give it until end of March for another announcement...After that, I'll be sending it in and speaking with service managers until I am blue in the face. I need this "PRO" body to perform like a "PRO".

Comments about Canon EOS-1D Mark III 10.1 Megapixel Digital SLR Camera:
Initially when I bought this camera, I ran into the focusing problems. Canon was excellent in repair turn around for an winter sporting event I had coming up. Since the repair and firmware upgrades, this camera has run without a hitch. I bought this camera for action and some low light events. During an event, I will run with 2 cameras, one the Mark III and the other the 40D. I also coupled the Mark III with my 5d Mark II, but for low light action at any event where use of flash is limited, the Mark III blows every other camera out the water. There is virtually no hunting for focus and the continuous servo was dead on about 70% during the low light captures. I found the 40d & 5d Mrk II to be out of this areana all together. i'm seriously contemplating he 1d Mark IV to accompany on future event shoots. I used the Mrk III in extreme cold down to -40. Not a hitch and I was surprised how long the battery lasted even at those temps. Great for winter sports and anything you want to through at it. I have used in studio for portrait work, where some of my shots involve action cameo's. The 1D Mark III is the cat's meow. Get it... it will not disappoint.

I use this camera to shoot events, such as, bicycle races and similar events sponsored by NGO's. I like the grips which make it easy to handle. This is important because the camrea is heavy and I find that I tend to carry it by the grips rather than use the strap on my neck which can be rather tiring. Also, the grips and weight add to the ease of handling with the heavier glass
With L lenses the quality is there without using too much space on the cards or the computer. I have a 50D which uses more space with the 15 megapixels.

Comments about Canon EOS-1D Mark III 10.1 Megapixel Digital SLR Camera:
Have had now for about 6 months. I also own a 5D Mark II which I have owned about 1 year. I had planned on selling my 5D once I bought the mark III but I have not been able to part ways with the 5D. Yes the Mark III is a pro level body, very customizable, built like a tank, has blazing fast AF and an amazing burst rate,(although the 10 fps claim largely depends on ISO, f stop, and a couple of custom feature settings. However, there appears to be no substitute for megapixels and sensor sensitivity. No where more apparent than when enlarging over 100%, which I frequently do for airshows, sporting events, etc. Also the 920,000 pixel preview screen on the 5D completely puts the Mark III's screen to shame. I simply do not trust the Mark III's preview screen for accurate previewing as far as color contrast and overall appearance. They are night and day in contrast.
Call me crazy, but unless your shooting sports for a living, and must have the blazing AF and burst rate, I cant justify buying this.

this camera ROCKS. I love it. it's the best.
so insted of getting the "1Ds mkIII" I got this camera and the "5D mkII" now I have the best of both worlds plus, and get this "10 FRAMES PER SECOND".
any thing I would need the 1Ds for I can use the 5D mkII on, and things that couldent be done with the 1Ds can be done with the awsome camera.

Comments about Canon EOS-1D Mark III 10.1 Megapixel Digital SLR Camera:
While I have had only a few weeks to explore this beauty, I have concluded that I should have invested it a long time ago. I shoot outdoor endurance sports , and the ID is the ticket. Coupled to a 100m-400mm Canon, it beats my 5ds by many a mile. Yes, it is a little heavy, but it is well worth the weight. Its maximum burst speed is breathtaking, almost to much for someone like me who prefers careful timing. Its build and seals relieve a lot of pressure from worries about wet, dirty and potentially damaging conditions. There are many features I have yet to explore, but I can see that once I have played with them they could be valuable. Having both CF and SD capability is a real blessing in fast-breaking situations where memory is consumed quickly. I use the SD as backup memory, so that I don't have to stop and reload. Long battery life also is great.
Someone once described this camera as a "beast," and so it is. It is powerful and most of all, a pro's beauty.

Great image making machine. Bought mine used for a steal.
I thought I bought a bargain and I did - but knowing what this thing can do now, I will gladly pay the asking price for a new one. I look forward to it's successor.
For six months now I have had nothing but pleasure. Once you learn how to set up the AF to suit conditions you find yourself in, it just nails whatever you throw at it.
Beautiful images with good dynamic range and colours.
Just sold my 40D and plan to get the new 7D from BH as soon as they stock it to use along side the 1D3. Have already had people ask why not sell the 1D3 too?
Very simple. I doubt the 7D will match the 1D3 in focussing performance- but it will exceed the 40D. It will also not focus F8 lens combinations.
IQ will still not match that of the 1D3.
1D3 has a larger sensor than the 7D's 1.6 crop which is nice for the wider end of the spectrum as well as a bit shallower DOF.
I use the 1D3 for natural light portraits, birds-in-flight, wildlife, my daughtr's ballet school productions (no flash) etc.
Absolute Gem. If you can afford one and you have good Canon lenses and shoot for images A3+ and smaller, don't even think about it. Get it.

Having previously owned a MKII this camera is a definate step up. While the camera has the same overall 'feel', Canon has done an excellant job of redesigning a great camera and making it better. Focusing is quicker, and there is better vertical focusing when using fast lenses. The ability to not have to hold a button while making changes such as ISO are two of the many things canon addressed.

This camera is amazing. It is fast and takes great images. I was suprised at how easy it was to learn and operate. It makes me want to purchase another one for my second body and give my 5D a rest. Once you use this camera, you won't go back to your old one, promise you that!
I don't have any cons right now, I mean yeah it's heavy but this is what I want from this camera, this camera is strong!

...and I am not saying this facetiously. Shoot Pro and Div1 sports and nature. I bought the latest version of this much maligned camera - the autofocus works as good or better than my 2004 1D Mark II. The user interface is much more intuitive and it is easier to operate.
Is has good high iso performance, nearly a stop better than my 1D Mark II. You will get a good deal on this camera now, before the next version comes out and even so you would have to wait to get the next version and would have to bear with all of the issues.
Today I shot 900 images and the battery still has 91% energy left!

Comments about Canon EOS-1D Mark III 10.1 Megapixel Digital SLR Camera:
Canon Mark III D day 1
First impressions of my new Canon Mark III D on day one. First let me say that I have barely scratched the surface of this complex camera.
Speed: I bought this unit because of it's speed, promoted as the fastest camera available. This is likely true but…….at 1 / 7000 shutter with ISO 100 the image was way under exposed in full midday sunlight. I'm not sure of the lighting conditions that would be needed for proper exposure given these settings but it's obvious that I will be unable to set the camera to these settings and photograph very much of anything.
Focus: Exceptional! Auto-focus is impressive except during extreme close up macro shots. I was trying to shoot an extreme close up with my 100mm macro which may have been the problem with the auto-focus searching. I needed my 60mm macro but see below.
Image: Exceptional, but not hugely different than my Rebel XTi. This may reflect my lens inventory short comings more so than the camera. The lowest f stop in my bag is 2.8 and my favorite 60mm macro lens is not compatible with my new Mark III D. I have ordered a 300mm f2.8 and a 50mm f1.2 from a lens rental company to try out prior to purchase. These two lenses will put the Mark III D to the test for image sharpness.
Color: With my Rebel XTi I almost always have to turn up the colors a bit in the RAW format but with the Mark III D no alteration of the colors is needed.
ISO: This is where I have been the most impressed so far! The reviews told me of the exceptional low light ability of this unit which weighed heavily in my decision to buy the Mark III D but boy, I had no idea how much difference there really would be. Shooting just past sunset I "blew out" some flowers with no flash and an ISO of only 1200. This unit goes up to 6400 ISO! I bet my dimly lit high school football fields are going to be much less troublesome this year.
Pros so far: Fast and accurate auto-focus (excluding extreme close up macro).
Exceptional colors and image quality.
Extreme improvement in low light shooting.
Cons so far: Very complex camera which will take a great deal of time before it's full benefits will be realized.
May have an extreme close up macro auto-focus issue (more on this issue to come).
