Not compatible with 35mm cameras or digital cameras using full-size image sensors.
The Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS (Optical Stabilizer) HSM Lens offers an "all-in-one" super-zoom lens solution, from wide-angle to long telephoto. It provides the equivalent focal range of approx. 27-300mm when used with a Nikon digital SLR camera(*). This lens has now been updated with the OS (Optical Stabilizer) system, which minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed 2-3 stops faster. This allows handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions.
The 18-200mm's optical design incorporates aspherical lenses and SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass, which provides the utmost correction for all types of aberrations. It also enables this extended super-zoom lens to be housed in a compact and lightweight construction.
DC lenses are exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras. The image circle (rear of lens) is sized to match the smaller dimensions used for the image sensor on digital cameras. As a result these lenses are also more compact and lightweight, and are better matched to digital SLR cameras.
Note! (*) Not compatible with 35mm cameras or digital cameras using full-size image sensors (e.g. Kodak DCS14n or DCS PRO SLR/n).

When I bought my D300 I also needed some lenses as I was new to photography (came from a point and shoot). I picked up this lens as I was told it's as good as the Nikon version.
After trying this lens at such events as the local race track I was amazed. The sun was down below the mountains, the track lights were on and I didn't think this lens would fair well do to the f-stops. WOW was I surprised! Even at 200mm, low light, autofocus, I was snapping pics of the cars doing 80mph around the track.
I have taken some really nice wildlife, landscape and portrait shots at dusk, but this lens really shines when the light is right.
This lens is my walk around lens as it hasn't let me down yet. I liked it so much I purchased the Sigma 150-500mm for those wildlife shots that are out of the reach of this lens (which I'm also happy with).
I've owned this lens for over a year now and have not experienced any problems as posted by other reviewers. It's fast enough to capture birds in flight, deer running and race cars on the track.
To those that have problems with this lens in low light; look at the f-stop of the lens. 3.5 to 6.3, what would you expect?

I use this lens as an all-in-one solution for my Nikon D40. It provides optical stabilization which the D40 doesn't include in its body and also prohibits dust from entering the sensor as having this type of lens discourages switching lenses.
This lens because is a cheaper alternative to Nikon's 18-200mm lens. It also got rated higher in What Digital Camera Magazine.
The lens is heavier than Nikon's version however and it makes the D40 more front heavy and you will need to adjust to the weight shift if you had been using the stock lens.
I only had this lens for about three months and the auto focusing mechanism has already failed. I was in Paris, and it stopped being responsive. I have sent it off to Sigma for repair. If it fails again, I cannot say I would recommend it.

Comments about Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM Lens for Nikon Digital SLR:
I have only had my new Sigma 18-200 zoom lens for a couple of weeks but so far am very pleased with it. B&H delivered it to me quickly and with no hitches and the lens has not been off my D70 Nikon camera since. The optical stabilizer is amazing and allows me to use the telephoto more in lower light conditions while obtaining clear sharp pictures. My only slight disappointment is that this lens with the optical stabilizer is somewhat heavier than the 18-200 without the stabilizer. But that is something one gets used to fairly quickly and the improved picture quality more than makes up for the few ounces of added weight. This is certainly what I was looking for in a lens for all purpose photography.

The lens gives very good pictures, and escpecially for the price. I'm satisfied I choose the image stabilization as it really makes a difference in low light or large zoom.

I've only had it for a week and a half but have gotten good results. It is very versatile and the price makes it an affordable (at least when comparing it to the more expensive NIKON 18-200) option for beginners. The auto-focus and image stabilization features work well.

Comments about Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM Lens for Nikon Digital SLR:
I really appreciated having this lens on my recent trip to Europe. No more fumbling to switch lenses for different tasks. It was great to be able to go from close-up to zoom so quickly and conveniently. I did have some problems with the lens locking up and my camera refusing to take a picture. After a few twists and turns of the focus, it would eventually take a picture, but too often, I missed a great shot. I often got the message that the lens was not attached, when I had just taken a shot and of course it was attached.

Comments about Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM Lens for Nikon Digital SLR:
I've used this lens for several months now on everything from street photography to indoor candids to wildlife and outdoors, and I'm still on the fence. It's a good value for the price considering it's about half the price of the comparable Nikon, but it has a few quirks. The optical stabilization isn't very good, even in relatively bright daylight, in the higher mm ranges, so a tri/monopod or your knee has to be used. Similar to other reviews I've seen, the focus is also pretty soft in the middle of the zoom range (~70-130mm), but quite sharp at the far ends of its range. It also seems pretty solidly built, and though it's a bit heavy, that shouldn't be surprising with such a high zoom range in such a compact lens. I like to do night photography as well, and lens creep can definitely be a factor. It also has a pretty close focus range, even at full zoom, which is definitely a plus for macro shots. All in all I'd have to say it's a pretty good lens, especially for the price.

Comments about Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM Lens for Nikon Digital SLR:
After MUCH review I purchased this lens because I could not justify spending twice as much for the Nikon version. This is money well spent. I have had this lens for a little over a month now and have taken about 100 pics. This review may be a bit premature but so far I'm very pleased. I was hoping to have this be my one lens fits all, or most shooting situations. The first day was very sunny and the shots were impressive. The auto focus did not let me down. Some have said that they find it to be loud. It is a bit louder than my Nikon kit lens, but not as loud as I had imagined reading previous reviews. It also seemed fairly quick to focus with regards to time. I didn't feel that I was waiting for it. I also took some shots indoors. I had some issues when using my flash because the lens is so prominent my built in flash casts a shadow. I plan on fixing that with an SB700 in the near future. That isn't the fault of the lens, just a heads up. I shot a few portraits and the bokeh is respectable. There has not been a problem with lens creep and there is a lock at 18mm which I like. For an all around lens for somebody with my fairly amateur skill level I don't think you could go wrong with this lens. I really like the versatility that's provided. [...] I'll update after 6 months or so and see how durable this lens is.

Still getting used to the lens. I have 3 Nikkor 18-200mm 3.5-5.6. And wanted a lens for my 14yr to try. After reading other reviews I decided to try the Sigma. I like the results I have seen from the Sigma, however slow focus as compared to my Nikon.

I have both the Nikon 18-200 VR and the Sigma 18-200 OS. The Sigma costs half as much, is just as sharp, and is just as sturdy. I've had lots of trouble with the Nikon, especially very noticeable vignetting. Also, the Nikon autofocus jams, locking up the camera. Buy the Sigma, it's built better.

Used for general purpose wide angle to medium telephoto images indoors and outdoors, day and night. It is small, light, smooth operating, and fairly fast focus in good light and not bad in poor light. OS is quite good, nearly as good as OEM products.
