Comments about Canon TL-H43 43mm 1.7x Telephoto Lens:
The optics are excellent. I would probably find it more handy if a had a more stable tripod. At this magnification, it doesn't take much to wiggle the camera.

Comments about Canon TL-H43 43mm 1.7x Telephoto Lens:
I purchased this lens to use it exactly as it was conceptualized by Canon: As an auxiliary telephoto lens for my Canon HV-20 HDV camcorder. It works great! It is sharp and is far superior to the $29 tele clip-on lens I bought last year. In the balcony of the local H.S. natatorium, I recorded my kids in the pool with great close ups. I used the lens with the camera zoomed in half to full telephoto with excellent results. Yes, of course if one zooms out to wide angle with the camera lens, there will be barrel shadowing. This lens is not intended to be an all-around lens. The CAMERA lens is the all-around lens, the TL-W43 is the auxiliary TELEPHOTO lens. Seems simple to me. I don't understand reviewers panning this lens because of barrel shadows when they zoom out. 'Sounds like naïveté on the reviewer's part.
The lens itself is fairly large, with a 72mm front element. It allows ample light into the camera for good video. The elements are coated to reduce flair and improve color rendition. When I played the video of my children in the pool on my Sony HD TV, the results were excellent.
The lens does add some weight to the front of the camera, but I simply ignore the weight and shoot. With a tripod. Camera stabilization increases in importance when using this lens, because it is able to meaningfully increase the telephoto "reach" of the camera and camera motion is also amplified.
I am neither a professional videographer nor a professional reviewer. I simply got this lens to improve my ability to make decent home movies. I'd buy it again. It does what it was designed for with fine results.

Comments about Canon TL-H43 43mm 1.7x Telephoto Lens:
Its disappointing to have a telephoto lens that you can use for only a short portion of its range because the lens barrel shows in the image. I wanted this in the hope of using it for bird closeups. It has been good for that. Most of its range is useless, so its a very expensive and heavy addition to my HV40 system. Colour is good. Contrast is good. Haven't used it enough to encounter focus issues at the extreme zoom. It is annoying to have to remember to not zoom out too far so you avoid the lens barrel showing as a unwanted vignette. It has very limited uses compared to the wide angle lens that works seamlessly with my HV40. I would recommend this with a lot of caution simply because it limits the type of video to be done when its on your camera..

Comments about Canon TL-H43 43mm 1.7x Telephoto Lens:
This is the telephoto lens Canon recommends for the HV-20, 30 and HV-40 HD camcorder. [...].When I shot some video with this lens I couldn't believe Canon would recommend it for the HV line of camcorders. Well over half the zoom gives you nothing but a full barrel effect (not just vignetting, but a full barrel wiping out most of the shot). I tried zooming to the point that the barrel went away in the viewfinder and then zooming from there. When I reviewed that video the barrel was still there on the tape, well past the center point of the zoom, into what seemed like almost two thirds of the length of the zoom. So the viewfinder shows less of the actual shot so you don't know where the barrel will disappear when you are actually shooting. In other words what you see in the viewfinder is not what the actual shot looks like because the barrel is there well past the viewfinder view. Then when I reviewed the remainder of the zoom it worked pretty good until I zoomed the full length. Right near the end of the full zoom the picture went very noticeably out of focus. I tried it several times thinking it might have been me even though I was shooting off a tripod. It wasn't, it was the lens. The full zoom is noticeably out of focus. So, what you get when you buy this lens is a lens that is good for about 1/4 to 1/3 of the zoom length and the rest is either a full barrel or out of focus. Canon should not recommend this lens for the HV line of camcorders or they should put a VERY big disclaimer stating the above problems.

Comments about Canon TL-H43 43mm 1.7x Telephoto Lens:
The Canon TLH-43 adds an additional 1.7x to zoom power for the HV20/30 camera. The entire zoom length is reduced to about half--you can only shoot from mid-range to full tele without having the lens shadow invade your shot at wider angles. The zoom is not particulary powerful but it does allow you to get in a little closer. Primarily, it is a great tool for getting a shorter depth of field--especially with tight shots of people--and achieving a nice cinematic look.

Comments about Canon TL-H43 43mm 1.7x Telephoto Lens:
This telephoto lens works quite well - draws distant shots near with a panoramic view. It is a bit heavy to hold for any length of time and one should probably use a tripod.
