The Canon WD-H43 Wide-Angle Adapter Lens screws into the front of the HV20's zoom lens to provide an even wider angle of coverage (0.7x) for those times when you are shooting in a confined space or for shooting scenery. The wide-converter is useful indoors as well, since you'll be able to fit more of your subject into the picture frame.

This product is necessary (in my opinion) for any owner of an HDV camera. The reason is that the CMOS/CCD chips on these cameras force the camera's lens to all be telephoto lenses, which is really annoying for me since I only want to shoot wide angle. The only way to get a standard wide angle (not even a super wide angle) on these cameras is to use a wide angle converter lens. I originally bought a low cost wide angle converter lens from an non-"Name Brand" manufacturer that was very wide angle (0.5x) and when I tried it on my Canon HV30 not only did I notice the overall image not being very good, but the lens created a "fisheye" effect which distorted the image significantly. It is possible that I will use this lens in the future for a creative effect, but it is not usable for everyday shooting. I buckled down and bought the rather expensive Canon wide angle converter lens, and immediately upon receiving it from B+H I could tell it was a totally different animal from what I had used before and was of very high quality. It has some significant weight to it, which is excellent because it makes stable shooting with the super light weight HV30 much easier. Plus, it's actually something you can hold onto which makes holding the HV30 easier. You can also tell both by looking at it and looking through it that it is made of very high quality glass. In use with my camera I was delighted to discover that while this converter gave me a usable wide angle that I so desperately wanted, unlike the cheap converter I had used it did not distort or degrade the image. The Canon adapter is now permanently attached to my HV30 and I have no reason to take it off. The quality of the lens is so high that even if I want a telephoto shot (which I can still do with this converter on the camera), I just do it with the converter attached. So basically this converter is, in my opinion, completely necessary for an owner of the HV30 or similar camera if you have any interest in shooting a subject that is closer than 15 feet, and that is not an exaggeration.

While this is a high quality lens, I find the 0.7x magnification factor too high. I use it for my Canon HV-20, and find that it's still a little too narrow for indoors shooting. Something like 0.5x would have been excellent. It's also quite heavy, although since I only use it indoors, I don't consider that too much of a problem. After all, it's a high quality lens.

I use this because I do much of my filming indoors. My kids have a habit of getting really close to me when filming, and this lens allows me to keep them in the scene even when close up. I like how it attaches easily, gives a great widescreen view and protects the camcorders lens.
My only complaint is the lens does seem to weigh as much as the camcorder and makes it very front heavy. Not a deal breaker, just something to be aware of.

I don't know what I was surprised that the add-on wide angle converter lens arrived as a high quality, well manufactured lens that easily screwed on to the front of my Canon camcorder. It must use the same engineering and manufacturing as their professional equipment. Very happy with purchase.

Very heavy...could also work as a boat anchor...I wish it was much, much lighter. I had to buy a wide strap for my HV30 because, with the old stock strap, the weight with the new lens started to cut into my neck.
But, as my Dad always use to say, "it's heavy...it must be good !" And, so far, I agree. It does the job very well. Oh ! and no sun shade will fit this lens ! It's too big...I'll have to make one...just to protect the lens a bit.

for my 43mm thread panasonic HMC70 it worked perfectly. i was undecided between pearstone, canon, or panasonic. so i got the middle of the 2 extreme prices.
it's solid, there;s a slight fishheye, but not noticiable, unless it's a horizontal line across the street. in closed rooms, there's no fisheye effect.
i don't notice any light loss. i used it in a wedding and was able to capture entire dance floor within frame.
slight vignetting only on top corners, not bottom.
when screwed in it's not loose or wobbly.
feels like solid glass. slightly heavy is ok.

I use it in my Canon Vixia HV30 camcorder. Extremely useful for indoor takes, when there is not much space available. The job is done perfectly.
Furthermore, its weight provides better stability to the camcorder.
Great product!
I recommend it.

The Canon Vixia HFM41 that I bought is a fine camera, but it really didn't give me the ability record wide enough angles for my applications, i.e. whole room shots from the corner.
The Wide Angle lens fixed that problem.

I'm using this with a Canon HV40 camcorder. I love the lens. It enables you to get a wider angle when shooting. I wish Canon would put a groove into the front of the lens for a protective filter to be added. This is the one drawback to this product.

Bought for M41 camcorder. Video quality shows no loss of image quality. Surprise... large, very heavy, and tedious to get threaded on a UV filter. I wouldn't suggest attaching directly to the threads on the camera. Also, need to access a menu to indicate an access. lens is attached, and wide factor is only .7x, .5x would have been better

After reviewing several W/A converters,We selected
this Canon product, and happy to report that it is
everything they said it would be....
We purchased this W/A lens for the purpose of
capturing a professional"Fireworks Display" in HD
The results.. crystal clear video, Great!!
This W/A lens is robust, and it does have some weight to it.Out of the box and threaded to our
HD camcorder in seconds, also it seemed to work
well through all the focus ranges, W/A to Tele.
Only drawback, can't attach filters.

I use the lens on my Canon HG10 primarily for outdoor nature recording.
The product does a nice job expanding the field of vision with very little distortion.
All the glass required definitely changed the portability of the camera with lens attached (weight and size). Would be nice if there were a quick connect like the SLRs - it can be cumbersome to screw on. Also, no option to protect or enhance the lens with a filter.
Overall, I am happy with the product to-date.

Comments about Canon WD-H43 43mm 0.7x Wide Angle Converter Lens - for the HV20:
I bought this lens in the hopes to make my HV40 a more valuable camera, and it didn't quite meet my needs.First of all, I bought the HV40 as a B camera (I'm a pro Wedding videographer), and that did not meet my needs, mostly due to the camera's poor performance in low light. However, in normal lighting situations, it seemed to perform well - so I bought this adapter in the hopes of enhancing it's abilities. When I put the adapter on, it cut down the light - not a good thing. Although not a significant drop in light was lost, but it was definitely noticable. I was already not happy with the camera's performance with low light, and this lens took away some of the very valuable light the camera needs to function well.[...] So I basically have a brand new lens to resell. (Look on a popular resale site for the listing soon!)Bottom line: if you are a professional, I wouldn't recommend using this lens or the camera as B equipment - unless you are always shooting in bright light.

We put it on the video camera and as a result are getting another 4" in every shot. It's bigger and heavier than we had expected, but otherwise it's great.
