The M3-61 from Korg is an advanced music workstation and sampler designed for professional applications. The outstanding sound quality, intuitive control interface, DAW integration ability, and a plethora of other features make this unit a pro musician's dream.
Korg's experience of producing music workstation began with the ubiquitous M1, and the M3 is a logical outcome of twenty years of research and development. It draws on several high-end technologies, namely the KARMA and OASYS systems, and includes comprehensive control, luscious sounds, a full featured sampler and touch screen technology.
General
- 61-key workstation/sampling keyboard
- Featuring the "EDS" sound generating system, derived from Korg's OASYS system and the advanced second-generation KARMA
- The second generation KARMA functionality is fully implemented and allows the user to perform natural instrument gestures like intricate finger-picking, strumming and harp glissandos, to complex cascades of notes, dance-riffs, gated and chopping effects and "improvising" drum grooves
- The hardware can be "virtualized" in the form of a VST, RTAS or Audio Units plug-in, for tight integration with a larger computer system
Sounds
- Includes 1,028 multi-samples, 1,606 drum samples, dual oscillators, four-level velocity switching/crossfading/layering, and stereo sampling
- A drum kit can be created from ROM or RAM samples, mono or stereo, with up to four-way velocity switching and cross-fading for incredible realism
Effects
- The filter section allows for the use of two resonant filters for each oscillator, simultaneously. Four filter types are provided - low-, high-, band-pass and band-reject
- Effect section provides up to five insert effects, two master effects, and one total effect
- 170 effect types include dynamic processing, amp modeling and speaker simulation, choruses, flangers, phasers, delays and reverbs
Control
- A color LCD not only provides a touch-view GUI, but also operates as an X-Y pad
- Eight, dynamic and velocity-sensitive pads provide a great way to play drum sounds, or up to eight-note chords, either live or as triggers for the KARMA function
- Eight slider/switch control surface can be used as a mixer, a set of sound controls, an editing interface, a real-time KARMA performance interface, or to control external software and hardware synthesizers and effects
Sampling
- Open Sampling System allows the user to sample and re-sample in any mode to produce new remixed combinations of sounds and effects, or to capture full performances "In-Track" within the sequencer
- Tools include time slice, time stretch, crossfade looping, rate change and normalize
- 64MB is stock sampling memory (can be increased to 320MB by adding the optional EXB-M256 memory expansion board)
- Samples in Korg native format. AIFF, WAV, Soundfont V2.0 and AKAI S-1000/3000 (with advanced Program parameter conversion) formats can be used, and internal samples can be exported as WAV or AIFF
- Sampling can also be done to attached media, so USB memory sticks and hard drives can be used to extend memory size
Sequencer
- High-resolution sequencer delivers 16-tracks that can hold up to 128 songs and 210,000 notes
- Timing resolution of 480 PPQ captures every nuance and detail of a performance
- Cue List function allows for creating songs in sections, or to play back completed songs as a medley

As a 4th generation Korg workstation user, I must say that Korg has another winner. I use my M3(as I did with my O1/Wfd, Triton Classic and Triton Extreme)as the nerve center of the duo 2 MUCH! ([@]). The color touch screen makes it easier and quicker to navigate under stage lights than the Triton's monochrome display. The upgrade from USB/CF to Twin USB 2.0 has made storage not only faster, but much cheaper($15 for a 2 gig thumb drive). The sounds are excellent and immediately useful. Beware, If you have sequences in Triton format that you want to reuse, make sure you save them in GM Format as the M3 will not read Triton sequences. I have the 61 key version and the keyboard feels great. In my opinion, it's one of the best non-weighted that I've ever played. Each program comes mated with a drum pattern. Highly inspirational. By pressing the record button, it puts you right into sequence mode so you can record your ideas while they're happening. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Get your hands on one and see for yourself.
