The 003 Rack is a complete and full-featured Digital Audio Worksation, comprising a 2U rack-mount module with analog, digital and MIDI input and output, Digidesign Pro Tools LE software, with the whole system communicating with a computer via a single FireWire cable.
In addition to eight high-quality analog I/Os, four of which are phantom powered microphone preamps, the 003 provides eight-channels of ADAT LightPipe I/O (48kHz maximum), two channels of coaxial S/PDIF, WordClock I/O and MIDI I/O. The unit ships with two headphone outputs with individual source and level control, in addition to a studio monitor output, plus alternate control room output.
Pro Tools LE software offers thirty-two tracks of simultaneous record and playback, 256 MIDI tracks, real-time (RTAS) plug-in support as well as AudioSuite functionality, and a host of additional editing and mixing features. The software is cross-platform and all sessions are fully compatible with Digidesign Pro Tools HD systems.
Included with the 003 Rack are the standard Digidesign DigiRack plug-ins, as well as a comprehensive bundle of plug-ins from other manufactures. Together, the system provides everything needed to capture, edit, and output high quality audio with the user needing to only provide microphones, monitors and a computer.
While not a major upgrade from the 002 family, the 003 series does add WordClock, a second headphone output and slightly better audio specifications. The software runs on a Window XP (Professional or Home) or a Mac OS X computer.
Note! A separate, dedicated hard-drive for the audio data is highly recommended.

It's easy to use. the Plug-ins are great! And it's affordable. There is better stuff for a bigger price, but I'm very happy. The support team has been awesome!

I make/record music for commercials, and also rock bands. The sound is superb, I also got the presonus digimax d8 hooked up to it for an extra 8 channels. The only thing I didn´t really like was that you don´t get ProTools 9 with it, you get PT8, and can upgrade for like $200 more. But either way, GREAT product!!!

After using a first-generation mBox for years, I finally upgraded to the 003 and I'm very pleased with my purchase.One of the first things you notice is the quality of the build...knobs and buttons have good action...don't feel flimsy.
