The Mini DAC FireWire from Apogee, is a two-channel professional quality 192kHz digital to analog converter. It is a portable and compact solution for studio playback, reference monitoring, FireWire connectivity to a DAW, or for use within a high-end home audio system.
The Mini DAC can function as a high level complement to any quality analog-to-digital converter, for the ultimate in pristine throughput. It accepts two channels of AES/EBU, coaxial and TOSLink S/PDIF, and outputs a high quality analog output over two XLR balanced connectors.
A volume control provides a compact solution for varying monitor levels, particularly for mixer-less situations, and for use with powered speakers. By connecting the appropriate outputs of a CD player to the Mini DAC, the home stereo enthusiast can achieve high levels of music reproduction. A high quality headphone output is also available.
Using the FireWire interface, the Mini DAC can provide a "digital through" function, whereby digital signals from other sources can be routed directly to a computer. Essentially, this feature provides FireWire connectivity for any analog-to-digital converters that do not have this interface themselves.

Comments about Apogee Electronics Mini DAC FireWire - 2 Channel D/A Converter with AES/EBU XLR, SPDIF Optical and Coaxial Inputs and FireWire Connectivity:
I ues this DAC as Digital Source for my Hi-Fi system.
I try to connect the DAC to my notebook vai Firewire port on my notebook but It doesn't work so I have Read FAQ in Technical Support from Apogee website they told me that the DAC must connect to 6 pin Firewire port only!
Unfotunetly, My notebook have only 4 pin Fi-Wi Port so I have brought Fi-Wi PCMCIA Express Which have 6 pin Fi-Wi port but it still Dosen't work cause the DAC need to powered from the port.
It mean, If I want to use this DAC, I must buy an adaptor to power the 6 pin Fi-Wi port on my notebook first.
I found it very complicate to use the DAC with normal notebook wich have 4 pin Fi-Wi port cause I need 6pin fi-wi PCMCIA card and AC adaptor to power the DAC and the DAC must need another AC adaptor to power itselfes so too many thing to connect.
Except This very complicate connection this DAC quite good. The sound quality is very good.
