Quantum Leap Gypsy from EastWest is a virtual instrument featuring instrumentation associated with gypsy culture. These include the violin, various styles of guitars and accordions, trombone, gypsy percussion, and more.
Gypsy is essential for film, TV and game composers who wish to create authentic gypsy style music. The instrument utilizes a dedicated playback engine, the PLAY Advanced Sample Engine, which provides an easy searchable browser and the ability for users to customize the sounds.
Quantum Leap Gypsy functions as follows:
- Stand-alone under ASIO, Core Audio or DirectSound
- Plug-in for applications supporting RTAS, VST and Audio Units for Mac OS X
- Plug-in for applications supporting VST and RTAS for Windows XP
- 32-bit standalone and plug-in versions included
- 64-bit PC VST (host must support 64-bit VST plug-ins) and standalone versions included

- Instruments include the violin (classical and gypsy style,) classical, Flamenco, Django style and Spanish steel string guitars, Campana, Silvestri, Excelsior and Bandoneon accordions, and trombone (classical and gypsy style)
- Other instruments include the cimbalom, Flamenco dancer foot-stomps and castanets, along with gypsy percussion
- The violin and trombone feature many articulations, repetitions and even true legato intervals. All of the guitars were sampled with up and down strokes, many velocities and picking styles, release trails, chords and effects
- The accordions feature many different setups, all with air flow in and out samples, as well as expressive samples, chords, and left hand bass
- Instrument plays back via the PLAY Advanced Sample Engine, a dedicated audio engine/interface providing a powerful streaming engine
- All instruments listed in a single browser for easy navigation
- Stereo Swap allows the user to instantly swap the left and right channels. Mono from left, mono from right, or mono sum allow for instant conversion from stereo to mono

The violin is very good in this VST plugin. As it was quite expensive, I expected that much. It's the closest I've heard to having a real violinist play on a track so far. I've tried several of the other instruments (and there are not very many) and I have yet to find a usable sound that will sit well in a mix. The guitars sound thick and dull (I tried EQing them, but I was unable to get a sound I liked.)
The setup and installation is a bit confusing and unnecessarily complicated (it took me a full week and a couple of requests for support before I could get it installed and working, whereas most other VST plugins are up and running in a few minutes). For the violin alone I'm happy to have Gypsy, but I was hoping for more instruments to use in my recordings.

Gypsy is another great product from East West Sounds online. THe Flameco guitar and violin are worth it all on there own for the price. Great library of sounds for the film/tv/multi media composer. i can't see any of these guys especially the guys writing for Games to be without.
