I've had two OM-2s, one OM-1, one point-and-shoot Olympus Digital, and fell in love with photography using an Olympus half-frame (remember those?). The E-510 is my absolute favorite! It takes beautiful pictures in auto mode, but lets me be creative, too. Olympus makes quality products and this one is a continuation of that tradition.

I am photography hobbiest and there are several picture taker at our family. I upgraded from e-500 to this product for two main reason:1. Image stabilizer form. It has delivered what I expect. Now I get nice and sharp imges with 200mm objective.2. Live view, even though this is not really must for DSLR, my fammily enjoys it. This feature has made it easier for whole familly to shoot photos.When considering Olympus gears please familiarize yourself with this great web resource: [@] It made it easy to go on for this product instaed of e-520.

I have had this camera for about 3 weeks now, and find I enjoy it more and more each day. The image stabilization allows me to get sharp pictures, hand held at lower shutter speeds. It is a perfect camera for the Olympus ZD 70-300 lens. The camera feels comfortable in my hands, the battery life is excellent. I find my E500 is not getting as much exercise as it used to! Very good images at both ISO 400 and IS0 800

The image stabilization of the 510 is just the ticket. I'm now able to get sharp shots of the cats in room light. They run when they see the flash, but having the ability to use available light is a great way to nab'em on the sly.

The live view is also a major boon. I was almost leery of the LCD not being movable, but after using it I find it is quite accomodating.

As I said in the headline, this camera has a ton of bang for the buck.

Although I have only taken practice shots around the house & yard, I am quite pleased wit the options and quality of the images so far. The only preset SCENE mode I've used is the panorama mode which stitches images together to form a nice panorama (with Xd card only). that's been fun.

It's light (a bit small in my hands), and it should be convenient to carry around.

I use the E-510 semi-professionally, but mostly shoot wildlife shots with it. So far it is an excellent camera and the Zuicko lenses I use, although not fast, have excellent edge to edge quality and color.

The absolute best thing about the camera is the size. Having used Nikon and Canon and Fuji (which are excellent cameras), the E-510 delivers comparable quality, but is small and rest nicely in the hand. And it DOES NOT feel like a heavy stone around your neck. This is important to me.

The menu system is wonderful. Where on many cameras you need to delve into many layers of menus to change anything, on the E-510 (and 410 too) you have one panel on the LCD and can change anything. They do have a deep menu system too.

When price is factored into the equation this is very hard to beat. Smaller size, lighter weight, better feature set and by getting the camera without a lens you can add the FABULOUS Zuiko 12-60mm F2.8 lens. This combination will perform with others costing a thousand more.

After months, thousands of pics, contest wins, etc. the only complaint is the lack of weather sealing.

I just upgraded from an E-300 body and am completely satisfied. I'm glad I didn't wait for, say, a 12MP model to appear or switch systems to Canon or Nikon. My test shots with the 14-54mm f2.8-3.5 lens are great. The image quality seems much improved from the E-300. The image stabilization works wonders, though admittedly I have nothing to compare it to. The highlights don't blow as easily and there is better detail and edge rendition (say with a backlit subject or against a very light background). I can't wait to take "real" photographs with this body.

The only "drawback" is that it doesn't save in TIFF like the E-300 did, but there is plugin for GIMP called UFRaw that reads the Olympus RAW format. (I use Linux so I don't use the included software.) I suppose the construction could feel a bit more solid as well.

I even like the shutter sound more than the E-300's! ;-)

I own about 3 different camera setups which include Canon,Sony/Minolta and Olympus. Even though I have a 1D MK II, Ishoot mostly with the 510 and my e-1 cameras.The 510 (while not built as rugged) offers much in the wayof a digital, but the image quality and noise levels (alwaysa complaint for me) has been reduced and the image looksamazing. I have printed 20x30 with these images (with noisereduction off in-camera) with startling results.Hats off to Olympus for keeping the Blm-1 battery for thisbecause I have a host of them for my e-500,e-1s, and e-330.The camera feels good in the hand, but it would be nice tohave a vertical shutter (battery grip). There is a 3rd partygrip out there if you are desperate.The single button quick settings option is great, as is theone touch white balance. I have a while balance filter Iplace over the lens to balance and it's so easy to do.Stabilization is excellent; I have not tried the pan onlyversion, but the in-camera version beats out thestabilization on my 18-50 Leica (Panasonic) lens by far.Write speed to fast cards is fast and the increased shotbuffer lets me take up to 9 raw+jpg images in short order.I still have a few nits with the camera but for 720 (herfrom B&H), it was a deal I couldn't pass up. I buy all mygear here.

Problems Encountered: I have not had any problems with the camera. My minor nitsare a bigger (but still smaller than desired) viewfinder,and the LCD in live view is difficult to see in direct light(Hoodman here I come).Other than that, I have had no complaints. Olympus broughtme to second place in an art gallery with an image shot withthe e-300 (and that was at 7.5mp) so I'm interested to seewhat the new 410 and 510 I bought is going to do.It's Not an E-3, but it sure walks around like one.

I narrowed my search down to this camera, the Pentax K10D, and various Nikon bodies (D40, D40x, and D80).I ruled the K10D out partially due to the limit of new lenses available, but mostly due to its bulk and size.Based on lens choice, I was leaning toward the Nikon line. I think the D80 is an exceptional camera, which is reflected in the higher price. (I found the D40/D40x to be small and awkward in usage).My goal was a DSLR with a Superzoom lens (e.g. 18-150+ range). I first tried the Nikon D40 and D80 with the VRII 18-200 lens. I found the combination to be powerful, but too bulky for my preferred usage. When I tried the Olympus with the 18-180 lenses, I fell in love. The whole kit was perfectly sized, fit perfectly in my hand, and ultimately was a great value. While unscientific, I also found better shooting quality with the in-body IS found in the Olympus than the Nikon (I could barely tell the difference in the Nikon with IS on or off, although it should be noted I only used the camera for a few hours).So, if you are looking for a new DSLR (and don't have an investment in lens with another line), I strongly recommend the Evolt E-510 with the 18-180 lens. Go and compare for yourself, the size, weight, and usefulness of this combination will amaze you.

Problems Encountered: No problems thus far.Minor complaints:- As with most DSLR's autofocus hunts in low light with apertures higher than 5.6- The built-in flash has a short range. Its fine for travel usage, but you'll benefit by having a dedicated add-on flash.
