I struggled with which lenses to bring to Yellowstone. It's a long trip, and I didn't want to bring everything - my "everything" bag is heavy. We'll... my advice is to bring everything!

The 85mm was great for dim interior work at the Inns, closeups of thermal features, and great for shooting critters through the open car window. Fast lens, light weight, wicked easy to carry. At home, I've got some great candid portraits - if you want to record what people really look like, get the 85. Watch that DOF! My Dad's temple is in, and his nose is out. I have a 1.6 cropped XSi.

The 70-200 was good at getting real close to thermal features, and really tight shots of critters. But you gotta be close to start with. I took some "Bear in the Lamar Valley" pictures - it's a 200 with a 1.6 crop - the bear ends up being a black dot. Wildlife up near the road... now we're talking! I don't want a picture of a Bison, I want a picture of his eye.

I brought my tripod, but rarely used it, it was a family vacation, and I was usually in bed at dawn, and eating dinner at dusk. The pictures I did take at these times are my best shots. Midday shots - colors are bleached and harsh shadows. I was always wishing for clouds.

The 40-70 was great for the geysers, pools, etc. It's the high quality mid-range zoom. Lots of these trails were loops, so I'd walk out with one lens on, and walk back with another.

My new 16-35 was the workhorse. You need the wide angle for lots of the thermal features - you're close, and they're large. Also, MANY landscape shots: waterfalls, canyons, valleys, etc. The USM is totally silent. The zoom feature is a big plus - many kinds of shots - one lens. It's not very heavy, and not very large (relatively), so you don't mind carrying it around on your camera. The lens, with the hood on, doesn't fit well in my backpack. A minor gripe. Get the UV to protect your glass.

I like the colors with the L lenses. Landscape mode helped with the blues/greens, even in midday sun. But what I really like is the L sharpness. I got Bison eyelashes, Elk ear hairs, and Marmot whiskers. I lugged that heavy backpack all over the place, and it was well worth it.

Yellowstone is very dusty, and I was cleaning my UV's every night. Also, be careful where you change lenses. I did see a lot of red stripes out there. Yellowstone really is a photographers paradise. It was a great vac, variety of stuff to do & see.

For a pricey L series and oustandings reviews,I'm disappointed. If you buy a 16-35 is because you really need that "16", and this lens has problems in that area (barrel distortion, chromatic aberration, not superbly sharp -but sharper than TS 17-). I think Tokina 12-24 or Canon 10-22 have better performances, but I'm using a full-frame sensor camera now, so I had to change to this lens.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Autofocus Lens:

I was concerned that the quality of the image would not be near as good as my Canon 24mm 1.4 lens. I did a test taking photos with both set at 2.8 and indeed my 24mm lens took much clearer shots. But later I realized that it was a bit unfair since the 16-35 was at its maximum aperture while the 24mm wasn't, so I repeated the test at a lower aperture and this time I was very pleased at how the 16-35 performed. Yes, I would definitely recommend.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Autofocus Lens:

I recently bought the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Autofocus Lens by Canon, and I am thrilled with the clarity of the photos it takes. I am an amateur photographer who is aspiring to become a professional real soon. I use this lens primarily for shooting landscapes, real estate, or in tight quarters. Previously, I only had a zoom lens that started at 70mm. I needed something at the opposite end of the spectrum. I love how I can get super-wide angles with this lens. It captures what is practically at my sides when I am at 16mm. There is a little distortion vertically when you are zoomed out that far, but that can be corrected easily with the latest version of Photoshop. It also zooms in to a typical 35mm. This is the focal length of a typical point-and-shoot lens, so there is no distortion. You just have to move in on your subject using your feet instead of a zoom. I use this lens with my Canon EOS 5D Mark II, and they work seamlessly together. I would recommend the 82mm (MC) UVa Haze #010 (2C) Filter that I purchased to protect the glass. It is worth spending the extra money on a good, clear filter to protect your investment. I also bought the Duracell High Speed 32 GB 600X USB 2.0 Compact Flash Card. The high speed (600X) ensures that you can take another photo faster, and the camera writes the photo to the card faster. With at 32 GB card, you do not have to change out your card in the middle of an event. If you take a card out while the camera is still on, it increases the likelihood that the photos on your card will be destroyed. If you get more memory, you can upload your photos later when you get home and can actually concentrate on what you are doing. It only takes seconds to upload your photos to a computer using this card. It really takes the frustration and time out of that step in the process.

This lens was easy to install and easy to use. The buttons are in convenient locations, and do not get in the way. I have shot video with this lens, and it looks production-quality.

The only draw-back so far is the distortion, but that is because of the focal length. You will get that with any lens of this focal length, and as mentioned above, it can be fixed easily with software.

I am enjoying using this lens, and it has made me even more enthusiastic about photography! I would recommend it to anyone serious about taking great photos.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Autofocus Lens:

This is my third L-Series lens, following a 70-200mm f/2.8L IS and 24-70mm f/2.8L. My three bodies are the 5DMkII, 7D, and T2i.

I was very surprised how little barrel distortion was present at 16mm with a full-frame sensor. When I ordered the lens I had not used one and was a little concerned about this but it proved to be a non-issue.

Optical quality is of course fantastic and I find in-focus points to be very sharp. Having the ability to go to 2.8 is great on this lens, as the extremely wide angle reduces the sense of shallow depth of field.

My primary use is on the 5D2 for video, using a RedRockmicro rig.

Amazing lens quality and durable for the outdoors. Perfect focus from edge to edge, really great in low light, quick auto focus. Accurate color capture, especially in the outdoors and landscape photography. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a great fast wide angle zoom, best canon has to offer.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Autofocus Lens:

I finally bought this lens after a lot of comparison with the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L. I've rented the 24-70 and while I found the quality great, the weight and size makes a big negative as a walkabout lens. The Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L is a great format, much lighter and just a few days out of the box, the image quality is amazing. Highly recommended. B&H shipping and customer service was great as per usual.

Landscapes and close quarters pushed me to purchase this lens. I was using the 24-105mm but felt like I needed a wider angle. I love the results from this lens, worth the purchase. Sometimes the distortion at 16mm is a little much but overall a great purchase. Really need a gradient filter with this lens.

At 16mm, captures the entire scene. Very fast in low light. a little soft wide open, especially during long exposures, but nothing that doesnt go away when stopped down

Incredible lens, purchased specifically for use with HD video feature on 5Dmk2 and a Glidecam. With these L lenses, you really get what you pay for. 16mm on a full frame sensor is WIDE, and the 2.8 is really a winner! This has replaced the 24-105 4L as my walk around lens. The 82mm filter size is probably the only downside but I picked up a step-up ring and now I can share filters with my 77mm lenses.

What a lens for the price! On the 7D or even the 5D this is a great lens. Wide enough to cover but mid range enough not to look to wide. I love this lens!

I travel all the time and often needed a wide angle for landscape shooting. Not only is this lens sharp its beautifully made and the pictures taken with this lens are amazing. Im glad I purchased the lens and recommend it highly to any landscape photographers seeking high performance lens with little to no vignetting. A great buy!!!
