I ordered this to hang directly on a wall, but when it arrived the instructions showed that it is made to be hooked into a special rail that was not included. I was able to use special drywall anchors and did secure it as best as possible.
So it worked out well for me, however I don't know how much gear I would put on it without having the rail for the correct installation.
