I did the research into "old school" headphones with the Noise Cancelling (NC) feature within a certain price range and then went out and tested them. The contest was not even close. The Sony won by a country mile.Since I started using it I got so much joy from them. The sound is superb! You here all the instruments in the song, clear voices and even when the artists breathe. And that is at 30 000ft! The cabin noise is dramatically reduced even with NC switched off. It is comfortable and I'm yet to get a headache from using these.Do not switch the NC on in a quite environment. That will give you a low buzzing, very irritating noise. But then again, that is not what that feature is designed for.The Details:- The cones that covers your ears can flip inwards that reduces the space needed to store them.- The cable is detachable which is a very nice feature that reduces the potential for cable damage.- The NC switch is situated on the rear of the right hand cup, is easy to reach and it complements the overall design.- On the rear of the left hand cup is a "Monitor" button that let you listen in on your surroundings. Nice feature when in-flight announcements are made. What's in the box?- A very nice, sturdy storage case with a soft lining.- Adaptor for airplane sockets. Listen to in-flight entertainment with your own headphones.- 1 x AAA battery for the NC feature- Adaptor for your home music system- A velvet pouch to store extra batteries, the home cinema and airplane adaptorIt would be nice to have a "remote control" in the cable but that won't stop me from buying this item again.Lastly:I decided to rather do a online purchase than buy it from the shop for personal reasons. B&H did not let me down. [...].I 100% recommend this item!

I'm a New Yorker, take the train and walk every day. I was able to test these headphones in the B&H store and thought the sound quality was great. And even better was their noise canceling abilities which is needed for the subway. Unfortunately the noise canceling is too sensitive to physical vibrations, including: riding the subway and walking. It seems that the computer interprets these vibrations as noise and then attempts to silence them. What ends up happening is a loud low pitched hum. This was not just the case with only my headphones but my friends as well. We both ended up returning them.

Bought 2 pairs of head phones mostly for airplane travel. One for myself and one for my wife. Found them to do a great job in cancelling noise, but they had to sit just right on my head, otherwise they would make weird soft noises.

Comments about Sony MDR-NC60 - Noise-Cancelling Stereo Headphones:
I was pleasantly surprised the first time I tried these on. The drone of the fridge in the background simply disappeared. With no audio input, and noise-canceling switched to "ON", a very feint background hiss is audible, but this is not a bother. Just flick the power switch to "OFF" to compare the effect when noise canceling is not activated.
The lower frequencies of vehicles passing in the street is canceled very well, but normal conversation is still audible if no audio input. The monitor switch is useful when you want to talk to someone without removing the headphones.
The extra jack supplied for use on aircraft is also great, but I have not tested that yet - although I am sure my next flight will be much more white-noise free!

I used these during a recent airline trip to Africa from the US. and they worked great! But I must confess, I used my noise isolation earphones with the noise canceling headphones over them and heard virtually nothing other than the music or in flight media at a very low volume... I mean virtually NOTHING! Along with a sleep mask and the 18 hour leg from Atlanta to Jo'burg was a piece of cake! I also use them while on my Zero Turn Mower... makes for a totally different experience.

We could not justify buying the more expensive variety of this type of headphone. So we thought we'd give these a try. We are very pleased with the choice. Did not buy them for music listening, however we have been impressed with that as well. Sitting at the computer working and listening to music while the world around is very muted. We bought them primarily for movies on airplane trips. Does a good job there. I really like the button that you can push to "release" the external noises in case there is an announcement, or need to have a brief conversation, etc., without having to turn down the volume each time.

Absolutely the best value out there in NC headphones. You can pay 2-3x as much and get better sound quality, but for the price you'll find none better. I'm very satisfied. B&H had the best price too!

i bought the Headpnones ,primarily to use on the long haul flights to Australia that we do several times a year. i got tired of not being able to hear properly through the head phones provided by the Airlines. it turned out to be an excellent decision and the headphones worked a treat.it made a massive difference to our flying experience.

These truly do cancel out sound from the outside. It almost made me sick to my stomach when I wore these the first day. It's a strange feeling putting these on your head. But after the first day, I got used to them and now I really like them!

Comments about Sony MDR-NC60 - Noise-Cancelling Stereo Headphones:
I am a filmmaker and have many thousands of dollars in Pro Sony gear. I love most everything they make. These headphones however were a real disappointment. I have a friend who has a pair of Bose QC15 headphones and I have used them many times in many different locations. I read the reviews on the Sony NC60 and thought it would be close to the Bose. I returned them the same day I got them. They are comfortable enough and good looking but thats about it. When the active noise canceling is engaged there is a loud and distinct *POP* and then a very high pitched whistle. I thought that this may be a defect but the instruction manual said that this is normal. I turned on some white noise in the back ground to see how well they work.... they did nothing. There was no difference with the noise canceling on and with it off. (except for the whistle giving me a head ache) I read further in the instructions and it said that the NC60 will only cancel out low frequency noise. So I got in my car and tooled around my neighborhood with the active noise canceling on, off, on, off... it slightly dimmed the very lowest of noise from the tires on the road. Nothing else.
If you are a commuter and want to dull the noise of the engine and that is absolutely it, then they would be ok for you. But if you want to actually cancel out the noise around you, don't waste your money. If you have never tried Bose QC15 you don't know what you're missing. There is no compairson.

Comments about Sony MDR-NC60 - Noise-Cancelling Stereo Headphones:
I bought these specifically for a seven-hour flight to Europe, a precursor to an upcoming trip to China. They were fantastic. I wore them every minute of both flights (an endorsement of their comfort) and arrived feeling noticeably less draggy than usual.
The noise reduction works as advertised and as described in most reviews here. The sound quality is quite good. In a nice touch, Sony includes a 1/4 inch adapter and one for the old-style two-prong airplane audio jack.
Someone said the cord is short. Mine comes in at five feet. That's plenty for me.
All in all, a home run. I love these phones. If I lose them, I'll buy another pair.

Comments about Sony MDR-NC60 - Noise-Cancelling Stereo Headphones:
I use these most days to listen to classical music and to hear movies while on a train commuting to and from work. It is an hour on the train each way. They are excellent headphones which compare favorably to the Bose, which cost three times the price. I don't know that my hearing is sufficiently acute to detect any difference in the sound quality. That said, they sound as good to me and the noise cancellation is as good and perhaps a bit better than the Bose. The ear cups are a tad smaller than the Bose which makes them a little less comfortable, but these are not uncomfortable for the hour that I wear them each trip. The soft case they come in provides less protection than the hard case supplied with the Bose, but since they are in my backpack most of the time, this has not proven to be a problem. I recommend these over the Bose because of the price differential. These are 1/3 the cost of the Bose.

Comments about Sony MDR-NC60 - Noise-Cancelling Stereo Headphones:
I have been travelling more in the last 2 years, for both pleasure and business. Just wanted to make my flights more comfortable (especially the long ones) in order to be able to sleep/read in a quieter environment or even just watch a movie w/o having the volume too high. These headphones seems to do the job.
I picked those because they were over-the-ear (the type I wanted), they seemed a very good value for the price (and I did NOT want to spend a fortune picking the Bose), the average review was good (I just disregard those that seemed "professional-sound-engineer" type, they do not make much sense when it comes to trade performance vs. cost). To be honest, I expected to be sacrificing compactness, so I was very surprised to discover they are not that big after all.
One more think: they were rated Best Traveler Headphones in 2009. Take that in mind if you want to buy a good product and do not want to spend a fortune with the latest products (of course more performing, but 2-4 times more expansive!!!)

Comments about Sony MDR-NC60 - Noise-Cancelling Stereo Headphones:
Ive had this set of headphones for about a month. I commute to New York City about 3-4 hours everyday so this was great for the train ride. While the noise cancelling doesn't completely shut out the outside world it is still very effective, especially with music. I use them to play video games (black ops) and for general use at home (especially when I want to concentrate)
Pros:
Noise cancelling is effective (I believe Bose have better noise cancelling but these are still pretty good)
No suction feeling that I got from the Bose
headsets.
Comfortable, relatively light, good construction
Button to turn quickly turn off noise cancelling to hear announcements
Works even after batter dies (obviously no noise cancelling)
Cons:
Battery Life (uses 1 AAA battery) last probably about 20-30hours (while it is acceptable just wish it was longer)
Messes up my hair (subject to other headphones tho)
Not good for walking (I assume this is with all noise cancelling headphones) but you can hear the vibration of walking quite clearly
Very Happy with the product
Comments about Sony MDR-NC60 - Noise-Cancelling Stereo Headphones:
These headphones are fantastic. I've never had noise cancelling headphoned before, they don't mask every noise, but all the environmental noise is dulled just enough so that it's not distracting. The sound quality for music is solid. Absolutely worth the money.

I recently purchased these headphones and they work great. The only thing I can say bad about them is if you are using them strictly for the noise cancellation feature you can slightly hear the opposing tone. It isn't that loud and can be easily ignored or if you are listening to music you won't notice it. Had to give it 4 stars because I have nothing to compare it too.

Comments about Sony MDR-NC60 - Noise-Cancelling Stereo Headphones:
I did plenty of research before settling on the Sony NC60. I have friends who have the Bose and after using these phones I can say they are close to comparable. The noise suppression is not quite as good as the Bose (which does not mean the NC doesn't work great-it does) but the sound quality and construction is definitely better. Worth the cost.
