The JVC SR-MV45US is a DVD-R/S-VHS/VHS dual deck with i.LINK input making it an ideal finalizing deck for government, educational, or professional studio installations looking for quality VHS to DVD archiving capability. The unit is equipped with advanced MPEG encoding for extended record run-times while maintaining deceptively user-friendly controls.

Super MPEG Processors
When recording from analog sources (S-VHS/VHS or TV input), video noise reduction is applied before MPEG-2 encoding to guarantee superior quality images. Several noise reduction features work together to clean up the image. Block noise reduction cuts "block noise" caused by MPEG-2 compression, Color DigiPure reduces 3D color noise, and Hadamard noise reduction eliminates "mosquito noise" from any DVD.
i.LINK Interface
The deck has an i.LINK terminal allowing DV-based projects from a variety of popular NLEs to be output directly to DVD; All MPEG-2 conversion is performed in real-time!
Live Memory and Live Check functions
Ideal for school track and field events, "Live Memory" function lets you playback scenes to check any performance. With the DVD-RAM's rewriting capability, video can be recorded from a camcorder to the DVD-RAM, enabling simultaneous recording and playback. Viewing missed scenes will not interrupt the recording. The "Live Check" function displays real-time images in a sub-window.

I bought this unit to back up my SVHS-C tapes to DVD. Since each tape is only 20-30 minutes long, I was concerned about whether the machine could copy multiple tapes to a given DVD. JVC sales people tried but weren't able to answer that question - something which I don't hold against them because this is a complicated machine. So in a nutshell, here's the scoop: multiple small tapes can be copied to a DVD. Each one goes into a separate DVD "session", so don't forget to finalize the DVD when you're done. Another important issue was "what format on the DVD?". Answer: DVD movie-style format (not MPG). To get MPG ffrom the DVD, you need a (hard-to find) ripper (looked at 13 products: Intertech is best).
There are a lot of multi-function buttons on the device, but most are intuitive and work pretty well. I have had some minor problems, but have found work-arounds.

I bought this unit to copy home-made camcorder tapes to DVD. It is a fairly sturdy, well-built machine that is easy to use once you get the hang of it. Many of my camcorder tapes were recorded in S-VHS and I was a bit disappointed to discover that they did not seem to play as sharp as my old RCA S-VHS camcorder. The resolution is only about 330 lines instead of 400.
Machines like this won't be around much longer. If you want a S-VHS deck buy this one now.

I use this product in a local government PEG access channel TV studio for production work. It works great for getting VHS Tape/DVD signals of township meetings into my video editing computer. Only one major problem - it has no antenna connection for cable TV signals. I bought the SR-MV45 to replace my previous and starting to die SR-MV40 (DVD burner no longer works on the MV40), only to discover if I wanted the cable TV signal to come to my studio TV, I would have to keep the MV40 since the MV45 does have the cable connection. Otherwise a great unit.

Comments about JVC SR-MV45US DVD-R/S-VHS/VHS Dual Deck with i.LINK Input:

I have over a hundred S-VHS tapes, going back over 14 years of programs that my TV station has created that I needed to move to a newer format. This deck is one of the few true S-VHS decks still available to purchase new. The fact that is has a built-in DVD burner is a HUGE plus. One deck dubbing from non-copy protected VHS or S-VHS tapes to DVDs makes my life simple. The menus are nothing to write home about, but this system makes clean copies, at a high level of quality with very little fuss. Doesn't take up much room either, compared to a Tape Deck AND a DVD burner purchased separately. Just be aware that it won't copy copy-protected movies to DVD. It will also copy non-copy-protected DVDs to tape for those luddites who still use VHS (which is no longer being made).

This is a fine, sturdy looking machine. The DVD reproduction is great, however, the resolution of the VHS portion is hardly "SUPER VHS" at 325 lines. Shouldn't it be closer to 400 lines?

The SR-MV45US is one of the best decks we have used, the copy fom SVHS, VHS or VHS-C tapes is excellent. With the built in TBC (Time Base Corretor) and the video stablizer also helps with poor quality or old VHS tapes. Setting the clock was a big pain. It would be better if you could just enter the numbers and you would be done, you literly have to scroll through every single year, month and day to set it. Otherwise no issues and the DVD deck is providing excellent recording. Would be great if you could hook this up to a key board when creating menus/titles
