The Fujifilm IS-1 Digital Camera is specially designed to photograph subjects in both normal visible light and in the near infra-red range (400nm-900nm). This makes it well suited for forensic or scientific applications as well as creative infra-red photography.

The camera features Fujifilm's Super CCD HR sensor and Real Photo Processor, delivering IS0 1600 performance and enabling capture of crisp and clear images even in low light conditions. The camera's 10.7x (28-300mm 35mm equivalent) zoom lens incorporates aspherical elements that result in a sharper image and minimizes distortion and aberrations. The lens is easily controlled via a manual zoom ring to give pinpoint accuracy when composing images. Furthermore, its fixed housing ensures that users do not have to contend with specks of dust or dirt collecting on the sensor. This can compromise image quality and is a drawback often associated with conventional digital SLRs.

Image quality in the IS-1 has been enhanced through improvements to its processing algorithms, and composition of photographs is made easy with a two-inch tilting LCD monitor which provides clear, flexible shooting at awkward high or low angles. In addition, the camera has 0.01 second shutter-lag and 0.8 second start-up time, which means that images can be composed and captured almost instantaneously. Additionally, the high ISO performance, helps to combat image blur caused by subject movement as well as camera shake.

Shoot in Infra-Red, Normal, or Both
The Fujifilm IS-1 is sensitive to a broad range of light frequencies (400nm - 900nm) covering the full range of visible light as well as the near infra-red range. Specific wavelengths can be isolated and captured from daylight or artificial light sources via lens filtering or by use of an Alternative Light Source (ALS) such as a forensic crime scope. The IS-1's on camera flash provides a limited amount of IR light and can be used to increase available light when filtering the lens for IR. Unfiltered color images will retain a pink hue due to the added presence of increased red and infrared light captured. Adding a hot mirror filter or UVIR cut filter to remove the presence of IR light is recommended when attempting to shoot "Normal" light images.
9 Megapixel Super CCD HR Sensor
The 9 Megapixel, 5th Generation Super CCD HR sensor provides the highest resolution available in a consumer digital camera. You'll be able to produce photo quality prints at sizes up to 20x30 inches, or crop images while maintaining an astounding level of detail. In addition, the natural low noise signature of the Fujifilm Super CCD HR produces high quality high resolution images even in the infrared light band.
Wide Angle Fujinon 10.7x Zoom Lens
The IS-1 features a 10.7x Wide Angle Optical Zoom with a focal range equivalent of 28mm - 300mm compared to 35mm film. The lens is also equipped with a 58mm Filter mount to add IR and IR-Cut filters as well as any other effects filters available. Furthermore, the Fujinon lens has superb macro capability with a Super Macro mode that enables the IS-1 to focus clearly as close up as 0.4" to the subject.
Real Photo Processor
Real Photo Technology captures treasured moments just as your eye sees them. Combining the new RP Processor, 5th Generation Super CCD-HR Sensor and Fujinon Lens Optics, the IS-1 delivers ultra-high sensitivity with low noise, faster operational speeds and reduced power consumption. This allows you to capture priceless memories of photographs with every nuance of light and color, even in low light situations without a flash. Furthermore, the IS-1 incorporates a focus assist beam that will be able to provide automatic focus even in low light conditions.
Intelligent Flash system
The FinePix IS-1 features the Fujifilm Intelligent Flash system, which delivers balanced flash power output. Historically, using flash at night has resulted in unsatisfying backgrounds, be it the black, underexposed appearance of conventional flash or the blurred 'swirl' of slow-sync flash. By comparison, Intelligent Flash means that images captured in low light have not only a blur-free well-exposed background but also natural-looking foreground illumination, free from the stark brightness that can be a by-product of flash photography.
Broad Range of Sensitivity
The camera has a very wide range of sensitivity setting available ranging from an equivalent ISO of 80 through to ISO 1600. Use the sensitivity setting of ISO 1600 at full resolution for low light photography with reduced noise or the Low sensitivity of ISO 80 for ultra-high quality photography. Furthermore, the camera has improved autofocus response time in low light conditions.
Anti-Blur Program
A built-in Anti-Blur Program takes advantage of the Real Photo technology to automatically suppress blurring due to "camera shake" or subject movement in low light situations. The result is beautiful photos every time.
Auto and Manual Focusing
The state-of-the-art auto focus system makes focusing quicker and more precise than ever with continuous auto focusing mode. In addition an AF-Assist Illuminator assures accurate focus - even in low light. The Camera also includes a manual focus ring for greater creative control, and the live CCD preview mode on the cameras LCD monitor is helpful when focusing.
Natural Light Mode
Just select "Natural Light" Mode and the camera will automatically suppress the flash and adjust sensitivity up to ISO 1600 to compensate for low-light situations, letting you easily take photos in a variety of indoor or outdoor situations and capture the image in full detail just as your eye sees it - without using a flash.
Closed Unit Design
Because the lens is permanently attached and the image chamber is completely sealed, there is no need to be concerned about dust getting onto the image sensor.
xD-Picture and CompactFlash Media
Equipped with dual media slots for handling of xD-Picture Cards and Compact Flash/Microdrives, the IS-1 lets you concentrate on shooting without worrying about storage space. You can even insert media cards in each slot and then select which one you want to use to store each image as you shoot.
Easy To Use
The IS-1 offers "point and shoot" simplicity in full auto mode as well as manual, macro, movie and 4 pre-programmed position modes (Natural Light, Portrait, Sports and Night). These scene modes allow you to get the shot you want anytime at any moment. For the aspiring photographer, the IS-1 gives you the ability to manually control settings to explore the wonderful world of photography. In addition, ultra-fast response times (0.01 second shutter lag and 0.8 second start-up) means that you'll never miss that spontaneous shot.
2.0" Tilting LCD Display and EVF Viewfinder
The Tilting 2.0" LCD makes it easy to frame your shot from a variety of shooting positions. And thanks to the LCD gain up control, you'll be able to view the LCD in bright and low light conditions. The viewfinder is electronic with 235,000 pixel resolution and provides 100% coverage.
Confirm Your Exposure
The camera has a live histogram that provides exposure setting checks prior to shooting, and an in-camera highlight warning function that alerts the user to overexposed areas of just-taken pictures. There is also a Highlight Warning feature that displays highlight areas that may be out of gamut during playback.
Hyper Utility Software HS-V2
Photo Enthusiast photographers will appreciate the Hyper Utility Software HS-V2 v.3.0 that is bundled with the IS-1. This software gives full functionality in RAW file conversion, which enables the photographer to explore the control and flexibility enjoyed when working with a 'lossless' file format. In addition, the camera also includes a USB driver, FinePix Viewer ImageMixer VCD2 for FinePix and RAW File Converter LE.
Direct Print Capable
The IS-1 supports PictBridge, which lets you directly connect to any PictBridge-enabled printer and print right from the Camera - No computer necessary.

Note: Unfiltered color images will retain a pink hue due to the added presence of increased red and infrared light captured. A great deal of this cast can be eliminated by adding a hot mirror filter or UVIR cut filter to remove the presence of IR light.

Note: Because of the wide range of light spectrums captured, focusing and exposure may often need to be done manually. However if enough visible light is available, the auto focusing will work.

Note: I-Flash is not fully functional when the lens is filtered for IR capture only.

Comments about Fujifilm IS-1 Digital Camera with Infra-Red Capability:

I have a good friend that was into IR Photography, he is more serious than I am, I do mostly weddings. Anyway, he went as far as having a camera converted for IR, which cost about what this camera did. I saw a posting about this one somewhere and thought it would be a good addition to some of my landscape work, and perhaps a few bridal portraits too.. Well I was right.. I first got it, and using an Hoya 72 filter I got great results right out of the box. I was supprised by the quality when hand holding ability of the camera. Being based on a consumer camera I figured it was at best a toy, I was wrong. I've since done Panoramic landscapes with it and they stitch together great.

There is a little grain in the pictures but I think that adds to the images artstic side.

Be prepared to do a little photoshop work to get the images you want.. It does movies in IR too but not sure what use that is to me, I'm sure there is some use for it in some other fields where this camera is marketed.

It's not my 40d but it has earned it's place in my camera bag.

Comments about Fujifilm IS-1 Digital Camera with Infra-Red Capability:

My IS-1 was an exploration - I'd seen the world of others infrared but wanted to see my own - I'd tried a point-and-shoot IR camera which produced some interesting images but with minimal viewing assistance and image sizes that didn't tolerate much cropping - A live view and generous pixel count created an instant liking for this camera - It's vision into an unseen world that continues to reveal magic.

Comments about Fujifilm IS-1 Digital Camera with Infra-Red Capability:

I have been using the IS-1 for B&W infared photography. It has been a dream to use. I carry it with the infared filter on it, leave it in program and use under/over exposure button with the adjustment wheel to get the exposure I want. Being able to view the image while adjusting the exposure insures I"ll get the effect I want. I only wish the LCD screen on the back was larger. For a medium sized camera, it is light weight and the zoom has a great range. I would recomend to anyone wanting to explore the odd world of infrared. I plan on using it on a trip to Ireland in August, to suppliment my traditional camera.

Comments about Fujifilm IS-1 Digital Camera with Infra-Red Capability:

I'm a general surgeon and advanced fine-art photographer. Using IR filters and IR cut hot mirror, I enjoy the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of the camera as a medical scientist and keen enthusiast in IR
and visible light photography (until now, I used another digital camera set at nightshot with an array of IR and ND filters - and some
vigneting!). The real-time Infrared preview is fine for manual critical focusing and exposition. I'm confortable in using this camera and strongly recomend it for scientists and IR
                  photographers.

I have used this camera for the last 6-months and have found it to be one of the best cameras I have in stock for shooting Black/White using the Infra-Red settings. For outstanding outdoor photography use a Peca 904 filter for outstanding results. If you want great color shots switch camera to color using a Peca 916 Visible Pass filter. You can not go wrong with such a great all purpose camera.
