The 1TB DriveStation Duo External Hard Drive Array from Buffalo is a high-capacity external RAID that features two 7200rpm drives that can be striped together in a hardware RAID 0 or RAID 1 configuration. It boasts an interface that allows it to be connected via FireWire-400 or USB 2.0. The drive is an excellent solution for digital imaging, data backup, or general storage applications.

1TB Capacity
1TB of capacity allows for storage of approximately 75 hours of uncompressed DV digital video, the equivalent of 212 4.7GB DVD video discs, or up to 250,000 MP3 files.
RAID Capabilities
The drive can be configured as a RAID 0 for full 1TB and fast data transfer. It can also be configured as a RAID 1 mirror, giving you half the data capacity and the security of real-time data mirroring.
Memeo Backup Software
The drive ships with Memeo AutoBackup software for Windows. This lets you easily backup important files, ensuring that they will be protected in the case of a drive failure.
SATA Drives
Buffalo exclusively uses 7200rpm SATA drives with large buffers in the DriveStation Duo, leaving no doubt that you will be receiving a quality drive in the enclosure.
Dual Interface
The drive easily connects to any computer with a FireWire-400 or USB 2.0 interface, making it easy to add to a variety of workstations.
Hot-Swappable
The drive is hot-swappable and plug-and-play, so there is no need to turn off your computer while connecting or disconnecting it.
Compact Size
The drive's 3.9 x 6.4 x 8.7" footprint makes it ideal for users with limited desk space.

Comments about Buffalo 1TB DriveStation Duo External Hard Drive Array:

I have purchased a 2T Byte unit and it completely failed after 14 months of use, two months out of warranty. I called and asked for support and they said "Sorry, you are out of warranty". Data recovery for this product will cost up to 5 thousand dollars. I cannot believe this. My suggestion is to avoid this product and go with multiple simpler solutions and check into online storage that automatically writes your data to a cloud.

Easy setup to create RAID 1 configuration. Auto shutoff feature is nice when shutting down PC. This unit is a replacement for a 500gb DriveStationDuo that went bad. Buffalo replaced under warranty.

RAID 1 protection - maybe and at a cost

Comments about Buffalo 1TB DriveStation Duo External Hard Drive Array:

I purchased my DriveStation Duo last July. I had the same configuration issue that the prior reviewer noted, and as time went on, the auto on/off feature became a problem. I was getting stop errors when starting my computer. The answer is booting the computer with the unit turned off. However, what happened when one of the drives failed really bothers me. The disk read error resulted in both drives being active, and thus they could not be accessed. Finally I got the functioning drive to read by hooking the unit up via firewire, but this only worked once. I called tech support, and they will warrant the drive. BUT, they wipe the drives when the unit is returned! So, the RAID 1 array will not rebuild. Also, if you open the case to try to swap out the drive to get it to rebuild yourself, you just voided the warranty. So, the choice is either maybe keeping your data at the cost of replacing the defective drive on your own nickle, or getting warranty service losing the data. You would think Buffalo would figure out a way to warrant the units but still allow the possibility of a RAID rebuild.

Firewire Needed to Set RAID Configuration

            By Patrick

            from Indianapolis, IN

Comments about Buffalo 1TB DriveStation Duo External Hard Drive Array:

I just got my drive up and operating after several calls to the company's 24/7 technical line. I bought this drive and tried to reset the RAID level it ships with the two component drives operating independently - you need to use the RAID utility if you want to set the unit to RAID 0, spanning mode, or RAID 1, mirroring mode. The first tech couldn't give me an answer on why the utility didn't work, and had me waste my time going to their ftp server to download a copy of the CD image that was available from their web site's download section (which I already had done). I got lucky on my second call. It turns out you cannot configure the drive when it is hooked-up via a USB port, it must be done via firewire. However, as a hardware change, you can configure the unit using one computer and use it with another (which is what I had to do). Otherwise, all is good (two more calls to tech support were required as the drive wasn't being seen by my computer, and again when the configuration locked). The drives have actual capacities of 465GB, so 1TB - not quite - but that seems to be true with everyone's hardware. The auto on-off is slick. The unit senses whether the USB port is active, and if it isn't, the unit powers down. Also, the small footprint is nice. We'll see from here - as I say, I just got this working.
