This boom arm is everything I was hoping for.
When reading some of the reviews, I was expecting a complicated piece of equipment (people complained that they recieved no instructions). After pulling it out of the package, it took all of about 10 seconds to learn how to use. Anyone who struggles with figuring it out, probably shouldn't be using a boom arm.
For a sub-$100 boom arm, I couldn't be happier. I plan to use this with an assortment of Alienbees and Speedlights, and modifiers including a 22" Beauty dish and a 47" Octobox.
The only reason I could see needing a "better" boom arm, is if the modifiers were considerably heavier. Its likely this boom would still be up to the task, but it may need more counterweight if something like a 7+lb WL-X3200 and 7' Octobox were attached to it... but those are extreme circumstances that wouldn't come into play for most people purchasing a boom arm in this price range.
If you need a boom arm to get the average modifier overhead, dont hesitate to buy this one. Its the perfect combination of value and quality. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one if the need arises.

The aluminum pole seems very light for how heavy the counter weight is. The joint where it connects to the tripod also clicks to adjust the angle of the arm instead of being smooth so I have already had problems with an art director wanting a MINOR adjustment because it's difficult to change the lighting ever so slightly.
That being said... there's nothing as good for the money so I'm not bummed about it. A perfect stand can run 500+ bucks.

This boom was recommended by Paul C Bluff for use with my AB800s. Before I decided to purchase it I did a little research and found really good reviews. I used it for the first time last week and the pictures came out amazing. The set up was easy despite reviews of people saying it was hard to set up. For the price, this is a great boom!

I use the boom arm on an 8'ft stand with Alien Bees and a variety of light modifiers. The length is great -- and the weight is sufficient to balance the weight of the AB/and soft box (beauty dish, etc).

I use this to hold a large Buff softbox on my 1600. works great
very strong. But I do use a sand bag on the stand, just in case.

I'm using this with a Paul C Buff 13', heavy-duty, air-cushioned stand and an AB800 with a PCB beauty dish. Takes a minute to figure out which way to attach the boom arm to the stand, but it holds very firm once you decide which hole to use.
It's very easy to get the boom balanced, and it's plain to see the weak link is the PCB stand, NOT the boom.

All & all a nice boom. Needed one desperately for my home studio to hold a monolight. Holds steadfast with accessories attached such as beauty dish & softbox. I should have measured the top post of the light stand...too thin. Currently using on another stand I have (on the second post) Need a new light stand anyway so I'll be sure to inquire about post size . The wire clips could have been a bit stiffer.

Like most of the reviewer here I would concur that this is a good product, but a little cumbersome. The lack of directions makes first time setup somewhat difficult. If you do not have a professional stand like the Impact-Heavy Duty light stand do not buy this product as it will not work with the smaller diameter stands. Once I set it up a couple of times it is very easy to set up on location and I feel very comfortable placing my Wescott Spiderlite 5 on top of it fully extended. It is not the lightest of stands which make transportation a bit of a pain. Put considering the price it is well worth the money.

Delivers what it promises. Sturdy. Holds studio lights (Alien Bees) with various attachments (beauty dish, large softbox, etc.) securely. Counterweight works brilliantly simply by sliding up & down quickly into best position. No problems assembling unit at all.

Bought because it was recommended by Alienbees as they no longer sell a boom arm. This boom works great, as it attaches to the frame and not just the end of the lightstand

I bought this boom to use with my impact light stand and it works great. Mainly I use the boom for my AB800 or my einstein and BD. Extended to full length loaded up with the strobe and BD, you must have the foot of your light stand at max footprint. I also made sure I positioned one of the legs forward to add strength there. I also was using sand bags for extra safety. Depending on how far you have the boom extended, you might not need the sand bags.
The boom is built solid and I appreciate the cord clips that are on the boom. Makes for a cleaner application.
I really havent found anything negative about this boom yet and I have used it on 5 shoots so far.

This medium sized boom is perfect for the home or small studio. I even take it on location however it does add significant weight to my lightstand bag. Everything works as expected.

Great boom. Make sure you have a heavy-duty stand. Once you get all that weight up in the air it can start to wobble without a solid stand. The boom will only clamp to thick diameter tubes.

Really not much to say about use of a boom arm. It is used as a boom for an overhead light. :-) What is important is the feeling of security, especially when one considers overhead lighting. Nothing will send a client away like a light and softbox drooping (or dropping) down on their head. No worries of that with this arm. Excellent construction all around.

I am pro (someone who does photography for a living) and this is a solid piece of equipment.
NOTE: this is only the boom so if you are buying things the stand is included it is not. It fits two different sizes of stands and is a very solid build.
