I bought the S5 IS in July and received it just before a trip to the beach with my family. I used it for pictures in the car, in the beach house, and on the beach. I took along a 420 EX that I bought perhaps six years ago and have used with two other Canon film cameras and one other Canon digital camera. It worked wonderfully for individual portraits in the beach house and late evening shots on the beach.
In addition to individual shots, I took very satisfactory landscape and macro pictures, including macros of food. I also was surprised by the feature allowing multiple shots. At least at 36mm, it popped right along, shot after shot, and I got the impression that I could have either filled the SD card or run out the batteries, whichever came first. Amazing.
I really like the camera's viewfinder, since it shows the same picture one would see through the lens. (Of course, to change settings it is necessary to open the lcd.) I use the camera with the lcd closed, only checking occasionally if I am unsure of a shot or especially interested in one. I also like the option of two optical macro settings. One is autofocus, adjustable length; the other is fixed focus, fixed length one-to-one. I found both very clear and useful.
The optical zoom is also wonderful and clear. Being able to reach out to over 400mm is great. Finally, in a couple of instances the ability to plug in four AA batteries has enabled me to catch some pictures when I otherwise would have missed them. Even having a second set of rechargeables doesn't always do the trick. Having the option to go to coppertops, or whatever, is quite wonderful.
I was less excited by the digital macro and zoom. Although they seem clearer than some I have encountered, they do not produce results I enjoy or would want to share. I have turned them off. I have also turned off the sound for the shutter. Why is it there?
Having seen an early model in a store near my home and having noticed then that it appeared to have a metal case, I was initially disappointed by the plastic case of the S5 IS I received. (I guess the same thing has happened to the XT, since I used an early XT this summer, and it had a wonderful metal case. Now the XT's case is plastic.) After using the S5 IS for three weeks in a variety of situations, including hikes at home, I am much more comfortable with its case. The light weight has its advantages. I just carry a locking gallon freezer bag in my shirt pocket in case of rain.
The software works well, an excellent thing in this world of sometimes confused computers.

Expertise: Advanced
Problems Encountered: I have two Canon digital SLRs and thought I would take theplunge with a Canon point and shoot. Unfortunately, it fellshort of my expectations when it came to image quality. Tobe honest, it was completely horrible! I'm not sure what thedifference is between the image sensor in my Rebel XT andthis one since they are both at 8 megapixels. It could bethe built-in lens of a point & shoot as opposed tointerchangeable lenses. I don't know. The digital noiseproduced in this camera reminds me of one of my firstdigital cameras that was a 2 megapixel. Ughhh, I wascompletely disappointed! This camera's main selling point, for me, was the image stabilization, but it's useless whenyou havesuch horrible low light digital grain. This camera is onlyuseful in full light conditions. Also, I did noticeinstantly the very loose lens cap. Very irritating. . .Asfor digital SLRs, Canon is pure gold in that area. In thepoint and shoot department, I cannot recommend. . .I wouldsuggest Sony. I've already had a few Sony point and shootdigitals in the past and the image quality was always good.

Comments about Canon Powershot S5 IS Digital Camera:
After much searching and reading reviews I bought the Canon S5 IS camera mainly for my travel photography and I was not disappointed.
I was getting fed up carrying my heavy Nikon DSLR cameras and lenses on my trips and I needed a very good compact camera that was light weight, not cumbersome and most important of all that it would produce great pictures. It was also very important for me that the camera would feel extremely comfortable in my hands. The Canon S5 IS was exactly the camera I was looking for!
It's loaded with features and you have to make use of the instruction manual quite often until you get used to it.
There is also the added bonus of very good video capture which really comes in handy.
I am mainly interested in good quality photos and after my last trip I decided to make a test and print a 16 x 20 enlargement of one my best shots.
I was not expecting anything impressive given such a big enlargement but the resultant 16 x 20 print was stunning! Very sharp focus, rich natural colours and contrast, amazing what this small camera can produce!
One final note. Many people have lamented about the lens cap coming off quite easily , yes it does, but all it takes to solve this problem (mind you this is a safety feature so as not to damage the lens) is to secure it to the neck strap by the strap provided.

I bought this to upgrade my take-along camera...
I have a G2, and it is getting dated. I really like this camera. I took it to Gatlinburg over the 4th and took pics of the fireworks, it did really well. I have taken pics of a very small cactus flower with the "super-macro" and it shows up the fine hairs on the flower. Obviously, you have to hold it steady or brace it in telephoto...and macro, but it is a lot of camera in a small package. I am still getting used to the lense cap coming off easily, but I see why they did it.
I like the large LCD viewfinder, it boots pretty quickly, and I like the 8 meg resoloution.
It's a great little camera!

I use it everyday, taking pictures of my little girl and can not get enough of it. The thing that I like more is the quality of the video. No need of a camcorder anymore. Have a Lumix as well, but canon wins.

I am an 85 year old man that enjoys taking pictures. I am far from being professional, but I do get a better photo out of the S5 than I did from the S3. I purchased the s5 because my s3 went fritz on me. It still works but will not switch over to the window when opened. I bought both cameras from B&H and I would recommend them to anyone. They have been tops to deal with.

So I have a D200, J has a S5 and this review is for the Canon S5 IS that L just bought. We got some really good shots of hummingbirds at the feeder with L's camera and my wife looks at me and says you paid 5X this for your Nikon?!?! Arguably, the D200 is better but the shots form this little Canon are awesome for the $$. I was really shocked that you could almost freeze the hummingbird wings for < $400. It also shoots awesome video. I recommended it to my mom and she ordered one too. Great camera, great buy!I would order it again!

Overall this is a great camera for the price and for its intended primary use, African Safari. I wanted a camera with reduced hassle and this camera had proved itself worthy of purchase! I look forward to use on many future trips!
The only thing I can think of that was really a pain for me is the lense cap. It comes off with the slightest little bump, but still a good camera!

Comments about Canon Powershot S5 IS Digital Camera:
This is my first digital camera and I researched options for several months before buying it. I am taking a trip to Tortola in October and wanted something reliable, easy to use and one with a dynamic optical zoom. This is it!
Camera is very comfortable, has an amazing super macro mode, and short lag time. The zoom is incredible and the image stabilizer works incredibly well, even when fully extended.
I purchased rechargeable batteries and the normal charger - the fast one didn't have very good reviews. I've been using the camera non-stop since July 9th (It's now the 24th), taking video and pics and the batteries are still going strong.
The lens cap does fall off pretty easily. I replaced it with one from my old Nikon film camera and it fits snugly. Also, I'm still learning how to take pictures when conditions aren't optimal so I can't rate how it does in low lighting.
All in all, I highly recommend this camera for anyone, even for pros when they don't feel like lugging around their SLRs.

Canon keeps on making cameras that give beautiful images right out the box. It's a new family treasure. If you care about recording your memories and not be a professional photographer, this is your camera. The quality of the video function is awesome. It's not the G9 in that respect but still good.

Bought this camera to take on vacation. I did not want to take my Nikon and all the lens. This camera was absolutely great! The long zoom made this one of the most versitle cameras I have ever used, and the picture quality was as good as the Nikon. It also used AA batteries, so it makes it very easy to just change. The LED display is one of the best I've seen. The other people in my group were so impressed, 2 of them wanted me to sell them the camera. I just had to buy another!

This has become the camera I have with me at all times. It is very versatile, and the zoom range is fantastic. With the IS on, you can handhold just about anything with reasonable results. The only down side I have found is the short aperture range (only to F8), as I would like something to F16ish. The lens cap problem is nitpicking, since you can get a different one for like a dollar...
I would recommend this camera to anyone.

I use the camera practically everywhere I go. I use it to photograph travel, scenary, sports, wild life etc.
I like everything about this easy to use camera. It has almost all features that an SLR does. I used to use a Sony Cyber Shot, but trust me, the Canon clarity is way better than a Sony's.
What I don't like about the camera is that the lens cover provided with the purchase is useless. There are better lens covers available in the market to pick from and you definitely need to get yourself a reasonably good LCD screen cover as it is difficult to clean the LCD screen.
I highly recommend this product to those people looking for features like the SLR, but do not have the financial resources to buy the SLR.

Comments about Canon Powershot S5 IS Digital Camera:
I got this camera in succession to my S3 IS, and have not been as impressed as I initially thought. I use it for travel, family, sports, and just for fun. I was disappointed right off the bat to find that it is not nearly as fast as the S3 (it has a much longer lag time and the max. frames per second has gone down fom 3.5-2.7... not the best for sports photography). Focusing in low light is surprisingly fast, but high ISO numbers give so much grain you can barely see the picture. On the other hand, it has plenty of shooting options and settings, with full manual controls and tons of customization. The zoom is massive and very fast (sometimes faster than the S3), and the color and sharpness of prints is unbelievable, even with a non-photo printer.
Even though I still prefer my S3 IS, I would recommend this camera to anyone...beginner or professional!
